How to Add a Link to Instagram Story, and Count Who Tapped It
The swipe-up link needed 10,000 followers. The sticker that replaced it needs none. What it does need is a second number, because viewing a Story and tapping its link are different things.
Here's how to add a link to Instagram Story: create the Story, tap the sticker icon at the top, choose Link, paste the URL, and tap Done. Place the sticker where people can see it and share the Story. Every account can do this since October 2021, whatever its follower count.
To see whether it worked, open the Story's insights and look at link taps, which Instagram counts apart from views. Insights need a professional account, which is free to switch to.
Until 2021, a link in a Story was a privilege. The swipe-up link was available only to verified accounts and accounts with at least 10,000 followers. On October 27, 2021, Instagram replaced swipe-up with the link sticker and opened it to every account, a change TechCrunch reported the same day. The only accounts Instagram said it would keep out were those that repeatedly share misinformation or hate speech.
That change moved the hard part. Adding a link is now trivial. Getting people to tap it isn't, and Instagram measures the two separately: a Story view counts each time the frame is seen, and a link tap counts only when someone presses the sticker and leaves for the page.
The gap between those numbers is the real result of a link Story. A frame that a thousand people saw and twenty tapped is a different outcome from one that two hundred saw and forty tapped, even though the first looks bigger. The view count is the one visitors notice and the one Instagram Story views change; the tap count is the one only you can see, and the one that pays.
How do you add a link sticker to an Instagram Story, step by step?
On iPhone and Android, in current versions of the app:
1. Tap the plus button and choose Story, or swipe right from the feed. Take a photo or video, or pick one from your camera roll.
2. Tap the sticker icon, the square smiley face at the top of the screen.
3. Tap Link in the sticker tray. If you don't see it, type link in the sticker search.
4. Paste the full URL. If you want the sticker to say something other than the web address, tap the option to customize the sticker text and write a short label.
5. Tap Done. Drag the sticker where you want it, and tap it to cycle through the color styles.
6. Share the Story to Your Story or to Close Friends.
The sticker opens the page in Instagram's own browser when someone taps it. Test it from another account before relying on it, since a typo in the URL is the most common reason a link Story gets views and no visits.
Why can't I add a link to my Instagram story?
If the Link option is missing from the sticker tray, check these in order:
- The app is out of date. The sticker tray changes with app updates, so update before anything else.
- You searched the wrong tray. The link sticker is in the sticker tray, not the text tool or the music tool. Typing link in the sticker search finds it.
- The account has violations. Instagram said at launch that accounts which repeatedly share misinformation or hate speech lose access to the link sticker. Instagram account status shows whether anything is limiting yours.
- The link itself is the problem. If the sticker appears but won't accept your URL, Instagram may be treating the address as spam or unsafe; try the page's plain address without redirects.
Do you need 10k followers to add a link to an Instagram story?
No. That was the old swipe-up rule, and it ended in October 2021. Since then the link sticker has been available to every account, personal or professional, with no follower minimum.
The 10,000 figure survives in old articles and in advice copied from them, which is why the question keeps being asked. If someone tells you to grow to 10k to unlock links, they're describing a feature Instagram retired years ago.
How do you see how many people clicked the link in your story?
Open the Story while it's live, or from your archive afterwards, and swipe up to see its activity. On a professional account, the insights for that frame list link taps among the interactions, separately from views and from the list of viewers. The exact label has varied between link clicks and link taps across app versions.
A few things to know about that number:
- It counts taps, and Instagram doesn't say whether repeat taps from one person are counted once or more.
- It doesn't name anyone. The viewer list shows who saw the Story; nothing shows who tapped the link.
- It stops at the tap. What people did on your page afterwards is only visible in your own website analytics. Adding tracking parameters to the URL is how most people tell Story traffic apart there.
- Insights need a creator or business account. A personal account sees who viewed the Story but not the tap count.
How do you work out a tap rate?
Divide link taps by the views on that frame. Compare frames with each other rather than against outside benchmarks, since your audience and topic set the baseline. Can you see who viewed your Instagram Story covers what the viewer list does and doesn't show.
Do link stickers reduce story views?
Instagram hasn't said that a link sticker lowers how widely a Story is shown, and there's no published evidence that it does. What a link does change is the path through your Stories.
When someone taps the sticker, they leave the Story sequence for the browser. If the link frame comes first, the people who tap it may never come back for the frames behind it, and those frames show fewer views. That's a sequencing effect, not a penalty.
The fix is order. Put the link on the last frame of a sequence, or on a frame that comes after the context people need to want it. If your Story views are falling across the board rather than after one frame, the cause is elsewhere, and why your Instagram Story isn't getting views goes through the usual reasons.
Can you add more than one link to an Instagram story?
Yes, by using more than one frame. Each frame of a Story can carry its own link sticker, so a sequence of five frames can point to five pages.
On a single frame, guidance differs depending on app version, and one link per frame is the version that works everywhere. It's also the better design: two stickers on one frame split the taps and make each look weaker. If you have many destinations, link one frame to a page that lists them all.
Links in Stories also expire with the Story after 24 hours. For a link that stays, save the Story to a Highlight on your profile, where the sticker keeps working.
What makes people tap a link in a Story?
A reason given on the frame itself. A sticker floating over an unrelated photo gets ignored. A frame that says what's on the other side, and why it's worth leaving Instagram for, gets taps.
- Write a custom sticker label that names the payoff, such as the recipe or the sign-up, rather than showing a bare web address.
- Show the thing in the frames before the link, so the tap is a continuation rather than a leap.
- Keep the sticker away from the edges, where profile icons and reply bars cover it.
- Use one link per sequence when the goal matters, so every frame builds toward the same tap.
Where the view count fits
Taps come from views, so a link Story can only perform as well as its reach. Stories are shown mostly to existing followers, and the viewer count is visible to you rather than to the public, but brands and partners often ask for Story numbers before agreeing to a link placement. That's where Instagram Story views come in: they raise the view count on the frame. They don't tap links, so judge a campaign by link taps, not by views. Followers, Reels and the rest of the catalog are on the Instagram page, including Instagram followers for the audience the Story is shown to.
Questions people ask about links in Instagram Stories
How do you add a link to an Instagram Story?
Create the Story, tap the sticker icon, choose Link, paste the URL and tap Done. Place the sticker and share. Every account has had the link sticker since October 2021.
Do you need 10,000 followers to add a link to an Instagram Story?
No. The 10,000-follower rule applied to the old swipe-up link, which Instagram replaced with the link sticker for all accounts on October 27, 2021.
Why is the link sticker missing on my Instagram Story?
Update the app and search the sticker tray for link. If it's still missing, the account may have lost access for repeated violations, which Account Status will show.
How do I see how many people tapped my Story link?
Open the Story's insights on a professional account. Link taps are listed among the interactions, separately from views, but Instagram doesn't show who tapped.
Do link stickers lower Instagram Story views?
Instagram hasn't said so. People who tap leave the Story sequence, so frames after a link can lose viewers. Putting the link on the last frame avoids that.
Can I put more than one link in an Instagram Story?
Yes, one per frame across several frames. One link per frame works on every app version and keeps taps from being split between stickers.
