How to Cancel Discord Nitro
The subscription ends on a date rather than on the click, and the boosts you gave a server do not come home when you cancel.
Open user settings, go to the subscriptions area, select Nitro and cancel. Discord asks for confirmation and then marks the subscription as ending rather than ending it.
You keep Nitro until the current period finishes. There is no partial refund for the remainder.
Server boosts included with the subscription stay applied to whichever servers you put them on until that same date, and they cannot be pulled back early.
The boost behavior is where cancellations go wrong, because boosts feel like something you own and behave like something you lent.
A Nitro subscription includes boosts. You apply them to servers, and a server reaching a boost threshold unlocks perks for everybody in it: better audio, more emoji, a vanity invite, a banner.
When you cancel, those boosts remain attached until the end of the paid period. You cannot withdraw them to use elsewhere, and the server does not lose anything yet. On the renewal date that would have been, the boosts expire.
That is when the server feels it. If it was sitting exactly on a level, it drops, and the perks that came with the level go with it — including, awkwardly, the custom invite link, which stops working and takes any posted copies of it with it.
So there is an etiquette point attached to a billing action: if you are the reason a community is at level two, telling an admin before the boosts lapse costs you nothing and gives them a chance to cover it. The expiry itself is silent.
Canceling, step by step
User settings, then subscriptions. Nitro appears with its renewal date.
Choose to cancel and confirm. The entry changes to show when access ends.
If you subscribed through a mobile app store, the cancellation happens in that store's subscription settings rather than inside Discord. The entry in Discord will say so.
Until the end date, everything continues to work, including uploads, emoji and the boosts you have applied.
What you lose at the end of the period
Larger uploads, higher streaming quality, custom emoji use across servers, the animated avatar and profile customization.
Any Nitro-only profile elements revert, and messages you already sent with custom emoji keep rendering for people who have access to them.
Servers you boosted lose those boosts at the same moment.
Your account, servers, friends and messages are unaffected. Nitro is a layer on top of an ordinary account.
Boosts, levels and what the server sees
Boosts are counted per server, and levels are thresholds of boost counts.
When boosts expire, the count falls, and a server below the threshold loses that level's perks.
The vanity invite link is the most visible casualty, because every posted copy of it stops resolving.
Admins can see how many boosts the server has and when they expire, but a boost is tied to the person who paid, so nobody can transfer yours.
Refunds and billing problems
Canceling does not refund the current period. Discord's refund policy is narrow and handled through support.
A charge after canceling usually means the cancellation did not complete, or that it was bought through an app store where the subscription still lives.
Gift subscriptions are separate: they do not renew, so there is nothing to cancel.
If a payment method expires, the subscription lapses on its own at the end of the period, with the same boost behavior.
Pausing instead, and the cheaper tier
There is no pause. The only way to stop paying is to cancel and resubscribe later.
Discord has offered a smaller tier with fewer features and no boosts included, which is the realistic middle ground if the uploads are what you use.
Resubscribing later does not restore boosts you previously applied; you place new ones.
And nothing about Nitro is required to use Discord. The free account keeps every community function, which is worth saying out loud to anyone who thinks canceling costs them access.
Questions people ask about canceling Nitro
Does Nitro stop immediately when I cancel?
No. It runs until the end of the period you already paid for, and there is no partial refund.
What happens to the servers I boosted?
The boosts stay applied until the subscription period ends, then expire. You cannot withdraw them early or move them.
Will the server know I canceled?
Not at the moment you cancel. Admins see the boost count fall when it expires, and the server may lose a level then.
Why am I still being charged after canceling?
Usually because the subscription was bought through a mobile app store and has to be canceled there, or the cancellation never completed.
Can I pause Nitro instead of canceling?
No. There is no pause. You cancel and subscribe again later if you want it back.
Do I lose my account or servers?
No. Nitro is an add-on. The account, servers, friends and message history are untouched.
