How to Clear Instagram Cache on iPhone and Android
Android has a real button for this. iPhone doesn't, and the workaround costs more than people expect. Neither one touches your account or your algorithm.
How to clear Instagram cache depends on the phone. On Android, open Settings, then Apps, Instagram, Storage, and tap Clear cache. On iPhone there is no cache button: the only full clear is deleting Instagram and reinstalling it, which signs you out and erases any drafts saved on the phone. Neither touches your account or posts.
The cache is the temporary copy of photos, videos and screens Instagram keeps on your phone so the feed loads faster the second time. Clearing it frees storage and can fix an app that shows stale content or keeps crashing. It doesn't fix problems that live on Instagram's side, and it doesn't reset what Instagram recommends to you.
Everything that matters on Instagram is stored on Instagram's servers, not in the cache: your posts, followers, likes, messages, saved collections and the view count on every Reel. The cache only holds copies, so deleting it can't delete any of them. The worst it can do is make the next scroll a little slower while the app downloads fresh copies.
That's also why clearing the cache sometimes looks like it changed a number. If the app was showing an old copy of a post, clearing the cache makes it fetch the current one, and a view or like count that seemed stuck can jump to its real value. Nothing was added; you're just seeing what was already there. Counts only move from the outside: people watching, or an order like Instagram views adding to a video's public count. A cache reset is a display fix, not a growth tactic.
The one thing that does live only on your phone is drafts. Instagram's Help Center says drafts are saved onto your device, can't be opened from another device even if you log in, and are lost if you uninstall the app. That single fact decides which method you should use.
Does Instagram have a clear cache button?
Not inside the main app, as of October 2026. There are three different things people find when they look for one, and only the first is a true cache clear:
- On Android, the phone's own app settings have Clear cache and Clear storage (or Clear data) buttons for Instagram. Instagram's Help Center points Android users there.
- Inside Instagram, the in-app browser has a Clear cookies and cache option, but Instagram's Help Center says it clears cookies, cache and storage data from websites you visited while using Instagram. It doesn't clear the app's own cache of photos and videos.
- On iPhone, iOS has no per-app cache button at all. The options are offloading the app or deleting and reinstalling it.
How do you clear Instagram cache on Android?
From the phone's settings, not from Instagram. Menu names vary a little by manufacturer, but the path is the same shape on every Android phone:
1. Open your phone's Settings app.
2. Tap Apps (on some phones, Apps and notifications or App management).
3. Find and tap Instagram.
4. Tap Storage, or Storage and cache.
5. Tap Clear cache.
That's the whole job. You stay logged in, your drafts stay, and the app rebuilds its cache as you scroll.
The button next to it is the one to be careful with. Clear storage, or Clear data on older phones, resets Instagram to a fresh install: it signs you out, deletes app settings on the phone and removes anything Instagram kept only on the device, including drafts. Use it only when clearing the cache hasn't fixed the problem and you have nothing in drafts.
How do you clear Instagram cache on iPhone?
By removing the app, because iOS doesn't expose a cache button for individual apps. There are two ways, and they don't do the same thing.
Offload App, under Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Instagram, removes the app itself but, as the iPhone's own description of the option says, keeps its documents and data. You get the app's install size back and keep your login, but most of what you wanted to clear may survive, because the cache counts as data.
Delete App, on the same screen or by long-pressing the icon, removes the app with all its data, cache included. Reinstall Instagram from the App Store, log in again, and you have a genuinely clean copy.
Before deleting, deal with drafts (how to save a draft on Instagram shows where they live). They're saved only on the phone and Instagram says they're lost on uninstall, so post them, save the Reel to your camera roll, or accept losing them. Have your password or login method ready too, since you'll be signed out.
Does clearing Instagram cache delete anything?
Clearing the cache on Android deletes only temporary files: downloaded copies of images, videos and screens. Here is what stays where it was:
- Your account, posts, Reels, Stories archive and Highlights.
- Followers, following, likes, comments and messages.
- Saved posts and collections.
- Insights and every public count, including views.
- Drafts, as long as you clear only the cache and not storage or data.
What the heavier options delete
Clear storage on Android and Delete App on iPhone both remove everything Instagram kept on the phone, which means you're signed out and drafts are gone. Neither touches anything on Instagram's servers, so your account looks exactly the same once you log back in.
Will clearing cache fix Instagram not loading?
Sometimes. It fixes the problems that come from a damaged or outdated local copy, and it does nothing for problems on Instagram's side or on your account.
It's worth trying when the feed shows the same old posts, images load gray, the app crashes when you open one screen, or storage is nearly full. It won't help when Instagram is down for everyone, when your connection is the problem, or when your account is limited. A message like Try again later after posting, liking or following is an action limit from Instagram, not a cache issue, and why you can't post on Instagram covers how to tell the two apart.
If clearing the cache changes nothing, update the app before going further. An old version is a more common cause of odd behavior than a full cache.
Does clearing cache reset the Instagram algorithm?
No. What Instagram recommends to you is tied to your account, built from what you watch, like, share and skip, and stored on Instagram's servers. Clearing the cache, offloading the app or reinstalling it leaves all of that in place, and your Explore and Reels look the same the moment you log back in.
There is a real control for this, and it's inside the app: Reset suggested content, under Settings and activity, then Content preferences. How to reset the Instagram algorithm walks through it and explains what it clears and what it leaves alone.
The same is true on TikTok, where the cache button lives in the app itself; how to clear cache on TikTok covers the difference. And for creators, clearing the cache has no effect on reach: who sees your posts is decided by how viewers respond to them, not by anything on your phone. If a Reel's public count is what you're working on, Instagram views adds to it from outside the app, which no setting on the phone can do. Every Instagram service is listed on the Instagram page.
Questions people ask about clearing Instagram's cache
Does clearing Instagram cache delete my messages or photos?
No. Messages, posts and photos are stored on Instagram's servers. Clearing the cache deletes only temporary copies on your phone, which the app downloads again as you use it.
Will I lose my drafts if I clear Instagram cache?
Not if you clear only the cache on Android. Clear storage on Android or deleting the app on iPhone does remove drafts, because Instagram saves drafts on the device and says they're lost on uninstall.
How often should you clear Instagram cache?
Only when something is wrong: stale content, crashes or low storage. Instagram rebuilds the cache as you scroll, so clearing it on a schedule just makes the app slower for a while.
Does clearing cache log you out of Instagram?
Clearing only the cache on Android keeps you logged in. Clearing storage on Android, or deleting and reinstalling the app on iPhone, signs you out.
Does offloading Instagram on iPhone clear the cache?
Not reliably. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, and the cache is part of that data. Deleting and reinstalling the app is the full clear on iPhone.
Can clearing cache make my Instagram views go up?
No. It can make the app show the current count instead of an old copy, but view counts come from people watching. Nothing on your phone adds views to a post.
