Do Hashtags Still Work on Instagram?

They still label a post. They stopped being a feed of their own, and the cap fell from thirty to five.

Updated October 2026

Do hashtags still work on Instagram? Yes, but for a smaller job. A hashtag still tells Instagram and searchers what a post is about. Since December 2025 you can use at most five per post or Reel, you can no longer follow a hashtag, and Instagram's own leadership says hashtags don't necessarily increase reach.

A hashtag on Instagram is a clickable label, a word or phrase after the # sign, that groups a post with others on the same subject and makes it findable through that tag.

What changed is everything around the label. The tag used to be a door that strangers walked through: people followed hashtags and saw new posts in their feed. That door closed in December 2024, and the five-tag cap a year later confirmed the direction.

The part most guides skip

Two dated changes explain almost every argument about hashtags you will find online, because most of that advice was written before them.

The first was the end of hashtag following. In December 2024 Instagram removed the ability to follow a hashtag, and posts from tags people had followed stopped appearing in their feeds. Until then, a well-chosen tag could put a post in front of people who had never heard of the account, through a route that had nothing to do with the recommendation system. After that date, the only way a tag reaches strangers is through search and the tag's own page, which someone has to choose to open.

The second was the cap. On December 19, 2025, Instagram's @creators account announced that every post and Reel would be limited to five hashtags, down from the thirty allowed for years. Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explained it in terms of quality: a few specific tags perform better than a long list of generic ones, and hashtags can help with search without necessarily raising reach. In the app, the composer simply refuses a sixth tag.

Read together, the two changes say what Instagram thinks a hashtag is for. It is a label that helps classify a post. It is not a distribution channel. Distribution is decided by how people respond to the post, which is the same mechanism that decides everything else on the platform.

That also means hashtags cannot rescue a post nobody engages with. The figure a visitor reads first is still the count under the post, and likes on an Instagram post act on that count, not on how the post is labeled.

How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?

Five, as of October 2026. The limit applies to feed posts, carousels and Reels, and it was announced by Instagram's @creators account on December 19, 2025.

Before that, the limit was thirty per post, which is why so many older guides recommend long blocks of tags pasted into the first comment. That advice is now unusable rather than merely outdated: the composer stops you at five, and reports from the rollout say tags beyond the limit are ignored where they slip through.

The question people now ask is how many hashtags you should use on Instagram, and the honest answer is between zero and five, chosen for accuracy. Using all five is not required, and padding the list with generic tags is exactly what the cap was designed to discourage.

If you are used to the old ceiling, the change is less painful than it looks. The extra twenty-five tags were mostly broad words that thousands of posts an hour shared, which made them nearly useless for being found.

Do hashtags help reach on Instagram?

Not directly, according to Instagram. Mosseri's explanation of the cap was explicit that hashtags can help with search but do not necessarily increase a post's reach.

That matches how distribution works now. A post reaches followers through feed ranking and strangers through recommendations, and both depend on signals from viewers: watching, liking, commenting, sharing, saving. A hashtag contributes to understanding what the post is about, which helps the system decide who might want it, but it does not push the post to anyone on its own. How reach on Instagram is earned breaks those two audiences down.

Where a tag can matter is search. Someone looking for a niche subject can find a post through a specific tag, and a specific tag has a small enough pool that your post is not buried within minutes.

So the useful version of the question is narrower: does this particular tag describe this particular post well enough that someone searching it would be glad to find it? If the answer is yes, it is worth one of your five.

Can you still follow hashtags on Instagram?

No. Instagram ended hashtag following in December 2024. Tags you followed before then no longer feed posts into your home feed, and there is no option to follow a new one.

You can still tap a hashtag on a post, or search for one, and see posts that use it. The tag page exists; it is just no longer something you subscribe to.

For publishers, this removed the one route by which a hashtag alone could deliver a post to strangers' feeds. That is the change most responsible for the feeling that hashtags stopped working, and it happened a full year before the cap.

It also changed which tags are worth using. A broad tag used to have followers; now it only has searchers, and few people search for a single common word.

Do hashtags work on Reels?

They work the same way on Reels as on feed posts: the same five-tag cap, the same labeling role, the same lack of direct reach.

Reels are distributed mostly to people who do not follow you, through the Reels feed and other recommendation surfaces. What decides how far a Reel travels is how people watch it, especially in the first seconds, not the tags under it.

One difference in practice: a Reel's subject is already described by its audio, its on-screen text and its caption, so a hashtag adds less information than it does to a still photo with a short caption. A tag that repeats what the caption already says is the least useful kind.

If your Reels are being watched but not traveling, the cause is almost never the tags. The view count under a Reel is fed by watching, and views on Instagram Reels work on that counter rather than on labeling.

Are hashtags or keywords better on Instagram?

Keywords in the caption carry more of the load now, for a simple reason: they can say more. A caption sentence that names the subject, the place or the method gives search and classification far more to work with than five tags can.

Instagram's own framing around the cap points the same way. If hashtags are a labeling aid with a hard limit of five, the description of the post has to come from somewhere else, and the caption is the obvious place.

This does not make hashtags pointless. The best use is as a precise category label alongside a caption that describes the post in plain words. One specific tag that matches what people actually search is worth more than five that match nothing in particular.

The same shift happened on other networks for similar reasons, and whether hashtags still work on X shows how differently that platform arrived at the answer.

How do you choose hashtags under the five-tag limit?

A short process that fits the current rules:

  • 1. Write the caption first, in plain words, saying what the post is. Most of the descriptive work belongs there.
  • 2. Search each candidate tag in Instagram and look at what appears. If the top posts are not the kind of thing you posted, the tag will not help anyone find you.
  • 3. Prefer specific over broad. A tag describing a technique, a place or a niche is searched by people who want exactly that.
  • 4. Drop any tag you would not tap yourself. If it only exists to be present, it is spending one of five slots on nothing.
  • 5. Stop when you run out of accurate tags. Two good tags beat five padded ones, and zero is a legitimate number.

What should you do instead of more hashtags?

Put the effort where distribution is decided. That means the first second of a Reel, the first line of a caption, and the reason someone would save or share the post.

Check that the account is eligible to be recommended at all. Instagram's Account Status screen shows whether anything on the account limits recommendations, and reading Account Status explains each line. A restricted account cannot be fixed with tags.

Watch how the counts read to a visitor. A stranger who lands on your post from search sees the numbers under it before the hashtags, and whether those numbers are visible at all is your choice; hiding like counts explains who still sees them when you switch them off. If you leave them visible, Instagram likes act on that figure, which no hashtag changes.

Questions people ask about Instagram hashtags

What is the hashtag limit on Instagram?

Five per post or Reel, as of October 2026. Instagram's @creators account announced the cap on December 19, 2025, replacing the previous limit of thirty.

Do hashtags in the comments still count?

The old trick of pasting a block of tags into the first comment belongs to the thirty-tag era. Under the current rules, keep your tags in the caption and within the five-tag limit.

Why did Instagram limit hashtags to five?

Instagram presented it as quality over quantity: a few specific tags work better than a long list of generic ones. The cap also cuts the tag spam that long lists encouraged.

Can I still follow a hashtag on Instagram?

No. Instagram removed hashtag following in December 2024. You can still search a tag or tap it to see posts using it, but it no longer feeds your home feed.

Do hashtags increase reach on Instagram?

Not by themselves. Instagram's head has said hashtags can help search without necessarily increasing reach. Reach follows how viewers respond to the post.

Is it better to use no hashtags at all?

Not necessarily. One or two accurate, specific tags can help people searching that subject find the post. What no longer helps is filling the list with broad tags.
