How Can I Follow Someone on Pinterest, or Just One Board?
Pinterest gives you two kinds of follow: the whole person, or one board. Picking the right one decides what fills your Following feed.
How can I follow someone on Pinterest? Open their profile and tap Follow, and their new Pins start appearing in your Following feed. If you only want one of their topics, open that board instead and follow it on its own. As of October 2026, Pinterest counts either choice as one follower on that person's profile.
The board option is the part most people miss, and it's the more useful one. Someone who pins recipes, home renovation and travel is three different feeds. Following just the board you care about keeps your Following view on topic, and the person still gains you as a follower.
Following on Pinterest means asking to see someone's new Pins in your Following feed, the tab on the home screen that shows only people and boards you follow, in addition to Pinterest's own recommendations. It's separate from the home feed's suggestions, which Pinterest builds from your searches and saves whether or not you follow anyone.
Pinterest is unusual in letting you follow at two levels. A profile follow subscribes you to everything that person saves to their public boards, now and in future. A board follow subscribes you to a single board. For the person being followed, Pinterest's Help Center says that following one or more of their boards counts as one follow, so the number on their profile goes up by one either way.
That follower count is the public figure visitors see under a profile name, and it's the number Pinterest followers add to. It's worth knowing what it measures: people who asked for a profile's Pins, or for at least one of its boards, in their Following feed. It doesn't decide where Pins rank in search, which runs on keywords and engagement.
How do you follow someone on Pinterest, on the app and the web?
The button is the same everywhere; only its position changes.
- In the app: tap the person's name or profile picture on any Pin to open their profile, then tap Follow under their name.
- On the web: open the profile at pinterest.com followed by their username, and click Follow.
- From a Pin: on a Pin's close-up page, the creator's name sits under the image with a Follow button beside it, so you can follow without leaving the Pin.
If you can't find the person first
Searching for a name returns Pins by default, not people. How to find people on Pinterest shows the switch to profile results and the direct URL route.
Can you follow a board without following the person?
Yes, and it's often the better choice. Open the board, from the person's profile or from a Pin saved to it, and tap Follow on the board itself. On the desktop site the option can sit behind the three-dot menu next to the board title.
A board follow brings only that board's new Pins into your Following feed. If the person creates new boards later, you won't see them unless you follow those too, which is different from a profile follow, where new boards are included automatically.
To switch from a profile follow to a single board, unfollow the profile first, then follow the board you want. Following the person and one of their boards at the same time is redundant, because the profile follow already includes the board.
Does Pinterest notify when you follow someone?
It can. Pinterest's notification settings include a Followers category, for both push and email, so the person you follow can be told about it if they keep that category switched on. You also appear in their followers list, and their follower count rises by one whether you followed the profile or a single board.
Unfollowing removes you from that list and takes the one away from the count. Pinterest's notification settings don't list a category for unfollows.
It's worth assuming a follow is visible. If you'd rather keep an eye on someone's ideas without them knowing, saving their Pins to one of your own private boards is the quieter route.
Why can't I follow someone on Pinterest?
When the Follow button does nothing or shows an error, the cause is usually one of these:
- You followed a lot of accounts quickly. Spam protections can pause actions that look automated, and a pause usually clears if you wait and try again later.
- One of you blocked the other. You can't follow an account that has blocked you, or one you've blocked until you unblock it.
- The board is private. Private boards, formerly called secret boards, are visible only to their owner and invited collaborators, so there's nothing to follow.
- The account is deactivated or suspended, so the profile no longer loads for you.
- The app is out of date or the session is stale. Updating the app or signing out and back in clears many button errors.
How do you see who you follow on Pinterest?
Open your own profile and tap Following, shown next to your follower count. The list includes people and, depending on the app version, boards you follow; a separate tab or filter separates the two where available.
From the same list you can unfollow by tapping the Following button next to any entry. It turns back into Follow, and the account's Pins leave your Following feed.
A periodic clean-up is worth doing. Accounts that changed topic, or boards that stopped being updated, fill the Following feed with Pins you don't want, and that's the main reason it starts to feel random.
Is there a follow limit on Pinterest?
Pinterest doesn't publish one, as of October 2026, and figures you see quoted on other sites aren't on its help center. What does exist on every platform of this kind is protection against spam: accounts that follow hundreds of others in a burst, to get follows back, look like bots, and their actions can be paused.
So the practical rule is the same as on other networks: follow people as you find them, not in batches of hundreds. Mass following followed by mass unfollowing is the pattern those protections exist to catch, and the kind of spam signal behind many a Pinterest violation notice.
If your Following feed has become unmanageable long before any limit, that's the better signal to act on. Unfollow profiles that drifted off topic and replace them with follows of the one board you actually wanted.
Do followers see your private boards?
No. Pinterest now calls secret boards private boards, and its Help Center says only you and the collaborators you invite can see them. A private board doesn't appear on your profile, its Pins don't go to your followers' Following feeds, and following your profile doesn't give anyone access to it. Saving someone's Pin to a private board doesn't notify them, either.
That makes private boards the right place for drafts and planning, such as gifts or a project you haven't announced. How to create a private board on Pinterest covers the setting and what changes when you flip it.
Why follow at all, if search shows you everything?
Because search shows you what's popular, and following shows you what a specific person thinks is good. On Pinterest, most discovery runs through search and recommendations (which you can steer away from generated images; see how to turn off AI on Pinterest); following is how you keep a source you trust, such as a designer, a cook or a shop, in front of you after the search is over.
From the other side, that's why followers on Pinterest are earned by focus. People follow a board that's consistently good at one thing. How to get followers on Pinterest covers that side in detail.
The public count matters most to brands and creators, because it's what a visitor reads under a profile name before deciding whether to follow. Pinterest followers add to that number using only your public profile URL or username, never your password. They don't change how your Pins rank. Every Pinterest service is on the Pinterest page.
Questions people ask about following on Pinterest
How do I follow someone on Pinterest?
Open their profile, from a Pin or a search for their username, and tap Follow under their name. Their new Pins then appear in your Following feed on the home screen.
Can I follow just one board on Pinterest?
Yes. Open the board and tap Follow on the board itself. You'll see only that board's new Pins, and the owner gains one follower as if you'd followed the profile.
Does someone know when I follow their Pinterest board?
They can. Pinterest has a Followers notification category, so the owner is told if they keep it on, and you appear in their followers list. A board follow counts as one follower on their profile.
Why won't Pinterest let me follow anyone?
Usually a temporary pause after following many accounts quickly, which clears with time. A block, a private board or a deactivated account can also stop a follow.
Can my followers see my private boards?
No. Private boards, formerly called secret boards, are visible only to you and the collaborators you invite, and their Pins never appear in followers' feeds.
Is there a limit to how many people you can follow on Pinterest?
Pinterest doesn't publish a number. Following many accounts in a burst can trigger spam protections that pause the action, so follow gradually.
