How Can I Join Telegram Group
Two completely different doors. One is searchable, the other exists only as a link that somebody can switch off.
If the group is public, search its name or username in the app's search bar and press join. Public groups also have an address of the form t.me plus the username, which opens the group when tapped.
If it is private, the only way in is an invite link from someone already inside. Tapping it opens a join prompt.
A private link can expire by time, by number of uses, or be revoked, and some groups route new arrivals through admin approval.
The invite link is the whole access system for private groups, and it has more switches than people expect.
When an admin creates a link, they can set an expiry date, a maximum number of uses, and whether joins need approval. They can create several links at once, which is how communities track where members came from, and they can revoke any of them without affecting the others.
So a link that does not work is rarely a mistake on your side. It expired, hit its limit, or was revoked, and Telegram shows the same unhelpful message for all three.
Approval mode adds a step that confuses newcomers: the link opens, you request to join, and then nothing visible happens until an admin acts. The group does not appear in your list in the meantime.
For anyone running a group, those controls are the moderation tool that matters most. A permanent public link is an open door, and large Telegram communities are routinely flooded through exactly that door. Links with a use limit, rotated periodically, cost nothing and remove the problem.
Finding public groups
Search inside Telegram matches group names and usernames, and shows public groups and channels alongside chats.
The results are ordered by Telegram's own relevance, which favors large groups, so a small group is easier to reach by its exact username.
A t.me address opens in the app and takes you to the join prompt.
Directories of Telegram groups exist on the web and are mostly spam. Prefer links published by the community you are actually looking for.
Joining a private group
You need a link from a member or an admin. There is no way to request access to a private group you cannot see.
The link opens a preview with the group name and member count, then a join button.
If approval is on, your request sits until an admin acts, and the group does not appear in your chat list yet.
Once in, whether you can read the history depends on a setting the admins chose when the group was created or converted.
Why a link does not work
It expired, reached its use limit, or was revoked. The error does not distinguish them.
The group was deleted or converted, which breaks old links.
You were previously removed with a ban, in which case the link opens and the join fails.
Or the link was copied incorrectly, which is common when it arrives inside a screenshot or a forwarded message that cut it short.
What other members see about you
Your name, your photo and your username, subject to your privacy settings.
Your phone number is hidden unless your settings expose it to contacts or to everyone.
Anyone in the group can message you if your privacy settings allow messages from non-contacts.
Tightening who can add you to groups is the setting worth checking before joining anything public, because it is how most Telegram spam starts.
Groups against channels
If you can post, you are in a group. If only admins post, it is a channel.
Channels have subscribers and a public view count per post; groups have members and conversation.
Many communities run both, with a channel for announcements and a group attached for discussion.
Joining either works the same way, through search for public ones and through a link for private ones.
Questions people ask about joining groups
How do I find a Telegram group?
Search its name or username in the app for public groups. Private groups are not searchable and need an invite link.
Why does the invite link not work?
It expired, hit its use limit, or was revoked by an admin. The same message appears for all three cases.
Can I join without sharing my phone number?
Yes. Other members see your name and username; the number is governed by your privacy settings and is hidden by default.
Why has nothing happened after I tapped join?
The group uses admin approval. Your request waits until an admin accepts it, and the group does not appear in your list meanwhile.
Can I see the messages sent before I joined?
Only if the group was set to show history to new members. Otherwise your view starts at the moment you joined.
How do I stop being added to random groups?
In privacy settings, restrict who can add you to groups. That is the main source of unsolicited Telegram group spam.
