What Is the Most Disliked Video on YouTube? The Last Public Record
The record was set in public and then frozen. YouTube hid dislike counts in 2021 and later took the video itself off the site, so the ranking is now history.
What is the most disliked video on YouTube? YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind, YouTube's own year-in-review video. Guinness World Records verified 19,124,328 dislikes on April 22, 2021, and the last archived count was about 20.4 million. The ranking is frozen: YouTube made dislike counts private on November 10, 2021.
No one outside a channel has seen a real dislike count since then, so any newer most-disliked list is an estimate. The video itself isn't watchable either: YouTube unlisted its Rewind videos at the end of 2025 and made them private in January 2026.
A dislike is the thumbs-down vote a viewer leaves on a YouTube video. Until November 2021 the total sat next to the like count for anyone to read, which is how a most-disliked ranking could exist at all: anyone could count.
YouTube Rewind 2018 set its record in that public era. It was uploaded on December 6, 2018, and within about a week it had passed Justin Bieber's Baby, the long-time record holder, to become the most disliked video on the platform. Viewers objected to its content and to the popular creators it left out, and the dislikes kept arriving for years.
The record is a reminder of how much a public vote shapes a first impression. Since dislikes went private, the like count is the only vote a visitor sees under a video, which is the number YouTube likes on Hourden adds to, with only the video's public watch link.
Which videos had the most dislikes before counts went private?
The list below uses the final counts recorded on Wikipedia's list of most-disliked YouTube videos, which is built from figures archived before dislike data disappeared. Numbers are rounded; they can't be updated anymore.
- YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind, YouTube, about 20.4 million dislikes, uploaded December 6, 2018.
- Baby Shark Dance, Pinkfong, about 15.0 million, uploaded June 17, 2016.
- Sadak 2 official trailer, about 13.7 million, uploaded August 12, 2020.
- Baby, Justin Bieber, about 12.5 million, uploaded February 19, 2010.
- Johny Johny Yes Papa, about 12.0 million, uploaded October 8, 2016.
Why did YouTube Rewind 2018 get so many dislikes?
Guinness World Records described the reaction to its outdated and off-the-mark content. The common complaint at the time was that it featured celebrities and brands over the creators viewers actually watched, and left out some of the biggest names on the platform. Wikipedia notes it was the first and only video publicly known to pass 20 million dislikes.
Can you still see dislikes on YouTube?
Not on other people's videos. Since November 10, 2021, the dislike button still works but the count is visible only to the channel that uploaded the video. On December 13, 2021, YouTube also removed the dislike figure from its public API, which ended the last way outsiders could read real numbers.
That's why any modern most-disliked ranking is a guess. Browser extensions estimate dislikes from archived data and their own users' votes, which is closest to the truth for old videos and least reliable for new ones. How to see dislikes on YouTube explains those estimates, and the one place real numbers still exist, YouTube Studio.
Why did YouTube hide dislikes?
To stop dislike attacks. YouTube's announcement, posted by The YouTube Team on November 10, 2021, said an experiment earlier that year had kept the button but hidden the count, and that the data showed a reduction in dislike attacking behavior: coordinated campaigns to push up a video's dislikes. YouTube also said smaller creators were targeted disproportionately.
The decision was controversial, and Rewind 2018 was part of why. A video that drew millions of public dislikes for YouTube itself was the most visible example of the vote that the change took away. YouTube has kept the count private since, as of October 2026.
What happened to the Rewind 2018 video?
It's no longer publicly available. YouTube stopped making Rewind after 2019, but the old videos stayed up for years. At the end of 2025 they were unlisted, which took them out of search, and on January 8, 2026, viewers found they had been made private, according to reporting by Dexerto. YouTube didn't publicly explain the change.
So the most disliked video in YouTube's history can't be watched on YouTube, and its record can't be checked against a live page. The Guinness figure from April 2021 and the archived final count are what remain.
Do dislikes actually hurt a video's reach?
YouTube doesn't publish how votes feed recommendations, so no one outside can put a number on it. YouTube's own description, in the 2021 announcement, is that the dislike still tunes the recommendations shown to the person who pressed it, and that creators can read the exact count in Studio as feedback.
The record holders are evidence of the limits of a dislike as a penalty. Baby Shark Dance carried millions of dislikes and still became one of the most watched videos on YouTube; Baby kept collecting views for over a decade. Dislikes recorded an opinion; they didn't stop people watching. What matters more to a channel is whether viewers keep watching, which what counts as a YouTube view puts in context.
How do creators see dislikes?
In YouTube Studio. The Content list shows each video's likes as a share of all votes, and Analytics reports the exact number of dislikes. YouTube shows the count, never the accounts that pressed the button, and the same is true of likes; who liked your YouTube video covers what Studio shows about the people behind the votes.
For creators, that turns the dislike into private feedback. A spike usually means the title or thumbnail promised something the video didn't deliver, or the video reached an audience it wasn't made for.
What is the most liked video on YouTube?
As of August 30, 2026, MrBeast's Would You Fly to Paris for a Baguette?, a YouTube Short, with about 58.7 million likes, according to Wikipedia's list of most-liked YouTube videos. It took the top spot on January 27, 2025 from Despacito by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee, which had held it for over seven years and remains the most liked music video, at about 56.6 million.
Unlike dislikes, likes are still public, so that ranking keeps moving. It's also why the like count carries more weight than it used to: it's the only vote a stranger can read under a video. Some creators add YouTube likes to a new upload so it doesn't open with an empty count; that changes the visible number, not how long people watch or what YouTube recommends. Every YouTube service is on the YouTube page.
