How to Recover a Deleted DM on Instagram, and When You Can't

Instagram has no undo for messages. What you can get back depends on how the message was deleted, and on who else was in the chat.

Updated 2026-10-03

How to recover a deleted DM on Instagram depends on how it was deleted. A deleted chat is gone only for you: the other person still has it and can send it back. An unsent message is gone for everyone. Instagram has no restore button for messages, and Download Your Information only returns what the account still holds.

So the honest answer is usually no, with two useful exceptions: the person on the other side of the chat, and any copy that already left Instagram, such as an export you made earlier or a notification preview on your phone. The rest of this guide goes through each case, and why the apps promising to recover deleted DMs can't do what they claim.

The part most guides skip

Instagram's Help Center draws the line in one sentence on its page about deleting chats: deleting a conversation from your inbox only deletes it for you, and it still appears in the inbox of the other people in it. That's the case most people are actually in, because deleting a chat is the common action and unsending each message is the rare one.

Unsend works the other way. It removes a message you sent from the chat for everyone, so neither side keeps a copy inside Instagram.

The search results for this question are crowded with recovery tools and phone-monitoring apps. None of them can reach Instagram's servers, which is where messages live, so they either read what's already on a phone or ask for your login. Your messages are tied to your account, and the account is what's worth protecting: the same people who DM you about a collaboration open your profile first and read the follower count before anything else, which is where Instagram followers makes a difference, with only your username and never your password.

Can you recover deleted Instagram messages?

Not from Instagram itself. There's no Recently Deleted folder for messages: the Recently Deleted area in your settings holds posts, Reels and stories you removed, for up to 30 days, and messages aren't part of it. Once a chat or a message is deleted from your side, the app has no way to bring it back.

What's left are copies that exist somewhere else:

  • The other person's inbox, if you deleted the chat rather than unsending the messages.
  • An earlier export of your data, if you downloaded your information before deleting.
  • Your phone's notification history, on devices that keep one and only if it was switched on before the message arrived; it shows the preview text, not the full chat.
  • Screenshots, emails or forwarded copies you or the other person made at the time.

Does the other person still see a message you deleted?

It depends on which button you pressed.

If you deleted the whole conversation, yes. As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center says deleting a chat removes it only from your inbox; it stays in the inbox of everyone else in it. That's good news if you're the one trying to recover it: ask the other person to forward the messages or screenshot them.

If you unsent a message, no. Unsend removes that message for everyone in the chat, including the recipient, whether or not they'd opened it. Neither of you can get it back from the app.

And if they deleted the chat on their end, your copy is untouched. Each side's delete only affects their own inbox.

Can you unsend an Instagram message?

Yes. Open the chat, press and hold the message you sent, and tap Unsend. On a computer, hover over the message, open the three-dot menu and choose Unsend. It disappears from the conversation for everyone in it.

The order matters if you're cleaning up a chat. Unsend works on messages inside an existing conversation, so if you delete the whole chat first, you lose access to the messages on your side while the other person keeps them. To remove something from both sides, unsend the specific messages, then delete the chat if you still want it gone from your inbox.

Unsend is for messages you sent. You can't remove someone else's messages from their copy of the chat.

Does Download Your Information include DMs?

Yes, for the messages your account still holds. Instagram's data export, now run through Meta's Accounts Center, lets you download a copy of your information, and messages are one of the categories you can select, along with their photos and attachments. Go to Settings, then Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, and choose the option to download or export your information. Meta prepares the file and notifies you when it's ready.

What it won't do is return a message you already deleted from your side. The export is a copy of the account as it stands. It's best used the other way round: export before you delete, if there's any chance you'll want the conversation later.

One date matters for older chats. Meta ended optional end-to-end encrypted chats on Instagram on May 8, 2026, and gave people with encrypted chats instructions to download them before the change. Encrypted conversations had always been handled separately from the standard export.

Do recovery apps work for Instagram DMs?

No. Instagram messages are stored on Instagram's servers, and no outside app can read those servers. Recovery tools fall into three groups, and none of them does what the ad says:

  • Phone data recovery software. It scans a phone's storage for leftover files. At best it finds cached images or fragments the app happened to leave behind, not your chat history.
  • Monitoring or spy apps. They have to be installed on the phone in advance and log what's on screen. They can't see anything from before they were installed, and installing them on someone else's phone is a serious privacy problem.
  • Login-based tools. They ask for your Instagram username and password to recover messages. What they recover is your account, for themselves.

How long does Instagram keep deleted messages?

Instagram doesn't publish a retention period for deleted messages, and more importantly, it doesn't offer you any way to retrieve them during whatever time they may remain on its systems. For practical purposes, a message deleted from your side is gone for you the moment you delete it.

Disappearing messages are a stronger version of the same thing. In a chat with disappearing messages turned on, messages are designed to vanish after they're seen and you leave the chat, so there's nothing to recover by design.

If a conversation matters for a legal or safety reason, don't rely on the app. Take screenshots that include the username and date, download your information while the chat is still there, and report the account through Instagram's own tools.

How do you keep a chat from being lost next time?

Make copies before anything happens. Export your information every so often if your DMs hold anything you'd need: client conversations, agreements, addresses. Screenshot the important parts with the username visible. Save photos and files you receive to your phone rather than leaving them only in the chat.

Protect the account too, since a hacked account is the most common way people lose a whole inbox at once. Turn on two-factor authentication, check where you're logged in, and never sign in to a third-party tool that asks for your password. Instagram account status shows whether the account has restrictions you'd want to fix, and if messages you expected are missing because someone cut you off rather than deleted anything, how to tell if someone blocked you on Instagram covers the signs.

The profile is the other half of an account people message. Brands and collaborators look at it before they reply, and Instagram followers adds to the count they read, using only your username. Every Instagram service is on the Instagram page.

Questions people ask about deleted Instagram DMs

Can you recover deleted Instagram messages?

Not from Instagram. There's no restore option for messages. If you deleted the chat, the other person still has it and can forward it back; an export made before deleting also keeps a copy.

If I delete an Instagram chat, does the other person still see it?

Yes. Instagram says deleting a conversation removes it only from your inbox. It stays in the other person's inbox unless you unsent the individual messages first.

Does unsending a message remove it for both people?

Yes. Press and hold the message and tap Unsend, and it's removed from the chat for everyone in it. Neither side can recover it from the app afterwards.

Does Instagram's data download include deleted messages?

No. Download Your Information includes the messages your account still holds, with attachments. It doesn't bring back messages you deleted before requesting it.

Do Instagram message recovery apps work?

No. Messages live on Instagram's servers, which outside apps can't reach. Recovery tools only scan your phone, spy apps only log what happens after installation, and tools that ask for your password are a takeover risk.

Does Recently Deleted on Instagram include messages?

No. Recently Deleted holds posts, Reels and stories you removed, for up to 30 days. Direct messages are not included, so there's nothing to restore from there.
