What removal does not do
It does not block them. They can still find your profile, read anything public, and follow you again immediately if they want to.
It does not unfriend them. If you were friends, you still are, and they still see whatever friends see.
It does not hide past activity. Anything they already saw, reacted to or commented on stays exactly as it is. Removal changes who receives your posts going forward and edits nothing about the past.
And it does not stop them seeing public posts. A public post is public. If you want someone not to see what you write, the lever is your post audience or a block, not your follower list.
Why your follower count keeps rising anyway
Because friends count as followers automatically. Accept a friend request and your follower number goes up without anyone following you in the one-way sense.
So a profile that removes one-way followers and keeps accepting friends will watch the count climb regardless. The two inputs are independent and only one of them is affected by the control on this page.
If the goal is a follower number that means something, the thing to understand is that on a personal profile it structurally cannot — it is a sum of friends and followers. On a Page there is no friendship at all, so the count is only one-way followers and it means what it says.
The alternatives, and which one you probably want
Unfollow a friend to stop seeing their posts while staying friends. They are not told. This is the one people are usually looking for when they arrive at this question, because the problem is what they see rather than who sees them.
Restrict a friend to keep the friendship while limiting what they see of your posts, without unfriending or blocking.
Snooze to hide someone temporarily rather than permanently.
Block to sever everything, which is visible to them if they look.
And change your post audience if the concern is a category of people rather than a specific person, since that solves the whole class at once instead of one account at a time.
Whether removing inactive followers helps
It does not improve your reach. Reach on Facebook comes from who engages with what you post, and an account that was not engaging was not consuming any of it.
What it does is lower your follower count, which is the number visitors read. So the trade is a cleaner list against a smaller headline figure, and for most personal profiles that is fine.
For a Page it is worth more thought, because a Page's follower count is doing real work with strangers and with anyone assessing whether the Page is worth following. Removing followers there lowers the number a visitor judges you on in exchange for a list nobody else can see.
The count that stays visible
Whatever you do with the list, the number stays public, and it is read before anything you wrote. That is the fixed constraint underneath this whole page.
A Page or profile that reads as unvisited gets less attention from the people who do arrive, and that is true regardless of how well curated the follower list is.
