How to DM Someone on Discord

The button is not always there, and when it is missing the reason is a setting on their side rather than a mistake on yours.

Updated October 2026

Click the person's name or avatar and use the message box in the profile card, or open the direct messages list and start a new conversation. On mobile, tap the avatar and choose message.

It works if you are friends, or if you share a server where they allow direct messages from members.

When the box is missing, they have switched off messages from server members, or they have blocked you, or you share no server at all.

The part most guides skip

The per-server privacy switch is the part that makes Discord different from other messengers, and it is why the same person can be reachable from one server and not from another.

In privacy settings, a user decides whether to allow direct messages from people in the servers they join. That setting applies by default to every server, and it can be overridden per server, which is the layer most people never touch.

So someone can be open to messages in the small server where they know everybody, and closed in the large public one where they get spam. From your side, both look identical until you try.

Friendship bypasses it. A friend can always send a message, which is why the practical sequence is to send a friend request if you need an ongoing conversation rather than a single question.

There is one more layer. Discord filters messages that look like spam, and a message from an account with no mutual history and a link in it is exactly what that filter is for. The message is delivered to a filtered area that the recipient may never read, which looks like being ignored.

Sending the message

In a channel, click the person's name to open their profile card. The message box is at the bottom of it.

From the home screen, the direct messages list has a control to start a new conversation by searching for a username.

On mobile, tap the avatar and choose message from the profile sheet.

Group messages work the same way by adding more than one person, up to a modest limit.

Why the option is missing

They allow messages only from friends, in their privacy settings or in a per-server override.

They blocked you, which removes the route entirely and hides your messages from them.

You share no server with them and are not friends, so Discord has no relationship to base the conversation on.

Or the server itself restricts new members, which can delay the ability to message anybody there.

Friend requests

A friend request can be sent by exact username, or from the profile card.

Users can restrict who may send them requests: everyone, friends of friends, or server members.

An accepted request makes messaging permanent regardless of shared servers.

Removing a friend does not notify the other person, and it returns messaging to whatever the server settings allow.

Your own settings

User settings, privacy and safety, has the switch for direct messages from server members, plus the content filter for messages from strangers.

The per-server override is in the server's own menu, which is where to close one noisy community without closing all of them.

Blocking is heavier and mutual in effect: their messages disappear and they cannot start new ones.

And if unwanted messages are constant, tightening who can send friend requests does more than blocking individuals.

What not to send

Unsolicited links are the fastest route to being filtered, reported, or flagged by Discord's own systems.

Mass messaging members of a server is against the rules and is the main reason accounts get removed for spam.

If you are promoting something, do it where the server allows it, with the admins' agreement.

A single, short, relevant message to one person is almost always fine. The pattern is what gets punished, not the act.

Questions people ask about Discord messages

Why can't I message someone on Discord?

They allow messages only from friends, they blocked you, or you share no server with them.

Do I need to be friends to send a message?

No, if you share a server and they accept messages from server members. Friendship removes the dependency on a shared server.

Can I block messages from one server only?

Yes. The direct message setting can be overridden per server from that server's menu.

Does the person know I tried to message them?

No. If the route is closed, nothing reaches them and nothing is reported to you beyond the missing box.

Where do messages from strangers go?

Into the message requests area, and Discord's spam filter can route them further out of sight.

Can I be banned for messaging people?

For doing it at scale, yes. Mass direct messages to server members are treated as spam and are a common cause of account action.
