TikTok Appeal: How Strikes, Bans and Appeals Actually Work
TikTok publishes its enforcement ladder: warning, strike, restriction, ban. Knowing which rung you're on tells you what an appeal can recover and how long you're waiting if it can't.
A TikTok appeal is a request for TikTok to review a moderation decision again: a removed video, a strike, a restricted feature or a banned account. You submit it from the notification about the decision or from the Account status page. If TikTok agrees it was wrong, it restores the content and removes the strike.
The system behind it is public. In an announcement on February 2, 2023, TikTok said strikes expire from an account's record after 90 days, that the number of strikes that leads to a permanent ban varies by policy and by feature, and that some severe violations, such as promoting violence or child sexual abuse material, lead to a ban on the first offense. As of September 2026 that is still the framework TikTok describes, and it decides how much an appeal matters: a strike you leave alone disappears in three months, while one strike too many removes the account.
A strike is a mark TikTok adds to an account's record when content or behavior breaks the Community Guidelines. What makes TikTok's version unusual is that the ladder isn't one ladder.
TikTok counts strikes per policy and per feature. A strike for a comment, a strike for something said on LIVE and a strike on a video are tracked in their own lanes, and each policy has its own threshold. TikTok's own example was that the threshold for hateful ideologies is stricter than the one for low-harm spam. Accounts that pile up strikes across many policies and features can also be banned on the total. TikTok gave its reason when it introduced the system: most repeat violators, it said, break the same policy with the same feature again and again, so the ladder is built to stop that pattern specifically.
This changes how you read your own status. Two strikes can be nothing to worry about or one step from a ban, depending on the policy they're in. The Account status page is the only place that tells you, and it's the first thing to open before deciding whether an appeal is worth your time.
None of this is visible from outside. A visitor sees the videos, the likes and the follower count, the number that TikTok followers change, and nothing about warnings or strikes. Standing is private between the account and TikTok, which is why the page that shows it matters so much.
How do TikTok strikes work?
The sequence TikTok describes goes like this:
- A first violation of most policies brings a warning in the app that explains which rule was broken, without a strike.
- Further violations add strikes, tracked per policy and per feature, such as comments, LIVE or videos.
- Strikes can come with temporary restrictions on a feature, such as being unable to comment or go LIVE for a period.
- Reaching the threshold for one policy or feature, or collecting too many strikes overall, ends in a permanent ban.
- Severe violations skip the ladder: TikTok bans on the first strike for promoting or threatening violence, child sexual abuse material and real-world violence or torture.
How long does a TikTok strike last?
Ninety days. After that, the strike drops off the record and no longer counts toward a ban. Deleting the video yourself doesn't make it go away sooner, because the strike belongs to the decision, not to the post still being up. The two ways a strike leaves earlier are a successful appeal or the 90 days passing. TikTok also said it warns accounts before they reach a permanent ban, so a notice that you are close to the limit is the moment to slow down and check each post against the rule you broke.
Where do you see your strikes? The Account status page
TikTok added an Account status page to its in-app Safety Center with the 2023 update. It lists warnings and active strikes, the policy each one falls under, the content involved and any restriction in effect. Next to it is Report records, which tracks the reports you've filed about other people's content.
In the app, go to your profile, open the menu and look in Settings and privacy for Account status. Menus move between versions, so if you don't find it, the search field in Settings will. Open it before appealing: it tells you whether the decision you want to contest is a warning, which carries no strike, or a strike close to a threshold, which is worth contesting right away.

How to submit an appeal on TikTok
For a removed video, a comment or a strike, the steps are short:
- Open the notification about the decision in your inbox, or open the item from Account status.
- Tap Appeal, usually shown at the top right of the moderation result.
- Give a short, factual reason: which rule you think was misapplied and why the content doesn't break it.
- Submit. A member of TikTok's safety team reviews it against the Community Guidelines, and the outcome arrives as a notification.
What makes an appeal more likely to succeed?
Specifics. Name the policy TikTok cited and explain in one or two sentences why the content falls outside it: the clip is from a news report, the weapon is a costume prop, the words quoted were being criticized, not endorsed. Appeals that argue about fairness in general, or that repeat the content's intent without addressing the rule, give the reviewer nothing to change their mind with. Submit once. Several appeals on the same decision don't speed it up.
How to appeal a TikTok ban
When an account is banned, opening the app shows a notice that the account is banned, with the option to submit an appeal. Use it: that is the route TikTok reviews. If you can't reach the notice, TikTok's support pages offer a feedback form for account problems, where you can describe the ban and ask for review.
A ban for a severe violation on the first strike is the hardest to reverse, because TikTok treats those categories as unambiguous. A ban at the end of a long run of strikes in one policy is also difficult, since each of those strikes was a separate decision. The appeals with the best odds are bans that followed a single disputed decision, where the content was misread.
How long is a permanent ban on TikTok?
Permanent. It doesn't expire the way a strike does. The account stays banned unless an appeal succeeds. Opening a new account to get around a ban is itself treated as circumventing enforcement, and TikTok removes accounts it links to banned ones, so the new account is at risk from the day it's created. If the ban is wrong, the appeal is the only route that leaves you with a stable account.
What an appeal can and can't reverse
A successful appeal restores the content where applicable and removes the strike, which also removes whatever feature restriction came with it. If the account itself was banned, it comes back with its videos, its history and its followers, including everything on the profile, whether that audience came from posting or from TikTok followers. That is the strongest reason to appeal a wrong ban rather than start again: a new account starts at zero.
An appeal doesn't return the views a video missed while it was down, and it doesn't touch strikes in other policies. It also doesn't cover content that stays up but is marked ineligible for the For You feed; TikTok offers a separate appeal for that decision, where it's available, and the result shows up as reach rather than as a notice. One more thing belongs here for honesty's sake. TikTok's Community Guidelines include rules against fake engagement, and TikTok says it removes inauthentic followers and likes it detects. Anyone adding followers or views from outside the app should know that the platform's rules cover it and that detected engagement can be removed; nothing about an appeal changes that.
How to recover a TikTok account that isn't banned
Many people searching for an appeal are really locked out: the password is lost, the phone number changed, or someone else took over the login. That isn't a moderation decision, so there is nothing to appeal. Use Forgot password on the login screen, recover by email or phone, and if the login details were changed by someone else, report it through TikTok's in-app or web feedback form for hacked accounts.
Two safety rules apply in every case. Never give a verification code to anyone who contacts you, including people claiming to be TikTok. And ignore paid unban services: TikTok's appeal is free, reviewed internally, and nobody outside TikTok can speed it up or guarantee the outcome.
