How to Unfollow on TikTok, One by One or in Bulk
Unfollowing is one tap. Unfollowing three hundred accounts is where TikTok's anti-spam limits, and the apps that promise to beat them, come in.
How to unfollow on TikTok: open the person's profile and tap the Following button, or go to your own profile, tap your Following count and tap Following next to any account in the list. The button switches back to Follow, their posts leave your Following feed, and TikTok doesn't send them an alert.
That's the one-at-a-time version, and it's all TikTok offers natively. There's no select-all, no bulk unfollow and no setting that clears the list. Everything below is about what happens when you want to unfollow a lot of accounts, why the tools that promise to do it for you are a bad trade, and the small glitch where people you unfollowed seem to come back.
TikTok treats following and unfollowing as the same kind of action for spam purposes. Software that grows accounts by following thousands of people and then unfollowing them is one of the oldest tricks on any social app, so a burst of unfollows looks like that software, whoever is doing it. When you hit the limit, taps stop registering or an error appears, exactly like the block described in why you can't follow people on TikTok.
The follow-unfollow trick is also why some accounts lose followers in waves: people who followed you to get a follow back, then left once you did. A follower count that shrinks after a growth spurt is often that pattern unwinding. If the count is what you care about, TikTok followers adds to it with only your public username, no login, and a follow from an order doesn't come with an unfollow attached a week later.
How do you unfollow someone on TikTok?
There are two places to do it, and both take one tap.
From their profile: open the profile, tap the Following button under their name, and it changes back to Follow. If you follow each other, the button reads Friends instead; tapping it unfollows them in the same way.
From your list: tap Profile, tap the number above Following, and you'll see every account you follow. Tap the Following button next to a name to unfollow it without opening the profile. This is the quicker route when you're clearing out several accounts.
On the web, the same list opens from your profile page, with the same button next to each account.
How do you see who you follow on TikTok?
Your Following list is on your profile: tap the Following count and the list opens, with a search box at the top for finding a specific account. Mutual follows are labelled Friends.
Other people may or may not be able to see that list. TikTok lets you set who can view your following list, and how to hide your following list on TikTok shows where the setting is. Unfollowing is the only way to change what's in the list; hiding it only changes who can read it.
If the list looks wrong, with accounts missing or a count that doesn't match, TikTok's Help Center suggests refreshing the list a few times. The count and the list are fetched separately, and they don't always update at the same moment.
Does TikTok notify when you unfollow?
No. TikTok sends a notification when someone follows you, not when someone leaves. The person you unfollow isn't told.
They can still work it out. You disappear from their followers list, their follower count drops by one, and if you were mutual follows, the Friends label between you becomes a plain Follow button. Someone who watches their list closely, or uses a third-party tracker, can notice. Most people never do.
If you want to stop seeing someone without them noticing anything at all, unfollowing isn't the quietest option. Marking their videos Not interested in your feed changes what you see while leaving the follow in place.
Can you mass unfollow on TikTok?
Not with anything TikTok provides. The app has no bulk selection in the Following list, so mass unfollowing means tapping one account at a time.
The search results for this question are full of browser extensions and apps that promise to clear the list for you. They have two problems. They need to act as you, which means logging in with your TikTok account, and handing a stranger's tool your session is how accounts get taken over. And they unfollow fast, which is the exact pattern TikTok's spam limits are built to stop. The usual result is a temporary block on following and unfollowing, sometimes after only part of the list is gone.
The manual route is slower and safer. Work through the list in short sessions, a few dozen at a time, with normal use of the app in between.
Is there a limit to how many you can unfollow?
There's a rate, and TikTok doesn't publish it. Any figure you see quoted for unfollows per hour or per day is an estimate from people who hit the wall, and it varies with the age and history of the account. Newer accounts are held to a tighter pace.
What the limit looks like is consistent, though. Taps stop working, a message says you're doing that too fast, or an unfollow appears to work and then reverses. When that happens, stop for the session. Carrying on at the same pace tends to lengthen the pause.
There's also a ceiling on how many accounts you can follow in total, and unfollowing is how you get back under it. If you're clearing your list because follows have stopped working, that's the ceiling, and the fix is the same slow unfollowing described above.
Why does TikTok refollow people I unfollowed?
It usually hasn't. What people see is an unfollow that didn't stick, and there are a few common causes:
- The unfollow was rate-limited. During a fast clean-out, some taps look accepted in the app but never reach TikTok's servers, so the follow is still there when the list reloads.
- The app was showing a stale list. Closing and reopening the app, or clearing its cache, makes it fetch the real state; how to clear cache on TikTok shows where that is.
- Another device is logged in. An old phone or tablet with an out-of-date list can push actions you didn't make there.
- A connected app has access. A growth or analytics tool you once authorised may still be following on your behalf. Check the apps connected to your account and remove anything you don't use.
Does unfollowing hurt your reach?
Not your reach as a creator. TikTok's own explanation of how it recommends content lists the signals behind the For You feed: what viewers watch, like, share, comment on and skip, information about the video, and device and account settings. How many accounts you follow isn't among the factors it describes for distributing your videos.
Unfollowing does change what you see. TikTok's Help Center notes that unfollowing an account can remove its posts from your Following feed and your Friends tab, and accounts you follow back are one of the inputs to your own For You feed.
The number that does matter to a visitor is your follower count, which unfollowing doesn't touch unless people unfollow you back. If that count is the problem, TikTok followers adds to it with your public username and nothing else; it changes the number on the profile, not how TikTok distributes your videos. Free TikTok followers covers why follow-for-follow and free follower apps don't hold that number up, and every TikTok service is on the TikTok page.
Questions people ask about unfollowing on TikTok
How do you unfollow someone on TikTok?
Open their profile and tap Following, or tap your own Following count and tap Following next to any account in the list. The button switches back to Follow.
Does TikTok tell someone when you unfollow them?
No. TikTok doesn't send an unfollow notification. The person can only notice if they check their followers list or see a mutual Friends label turn back into a Follow button.
Can you unfollow everyone on TikTok at once?
No. TikTok has no bulk unfollow. Apps and extensions that offer it need your login and unfollow fast enough to trigger TikTok's spam limits, which can block the account from following and unfollowing for a while.
How many people can you unfollow on TikTok per day?
TikTok doesn't publish a number, and it varies by account. If taps stop working or an error appears, stop for the session and resume later at a slower pace.
Why do accounts I unfollowed show up again?
Usually the unfollow never reached TikTok because of a rate limit, the app showed a stale list, another logged-in device pushed old actions, or a connected third-party app is still following for you.
Does unfollowing people affect my TikTok views?
No. TikTok's explanation of its recommendations doesn't list the number of accounts you follow as a factor for distributing your videos. Unfollowing changes your own Following feed, not your reach.
