How to Upload a Video to YouTube, Step by Step

The upload itself takes a minute. The choice that shapes how the video starts is the one most people click past: public, unlisted, private or scheduled.

Updated October 2026

How to upload a video to YouTube from a computer: sign in to YouTube Studio, click Create in the top-right corner, choose Upload videos and select your file. Add a title, description and thumbnail, answer the made-for-kids question, then pick Private, Unlisted, Public or Schedule and save. In the YouTube app, tap the plus button and choose Video.

That is the process as YouTube's Help Center describes it as of October 2026. The rest of this page is about the decisions inside it, because two of them shape what happens to the video after you press publish: the visibility setting, and whether you let processing finish before you share the link.

The part most guides skip

The visibility step is where most first uploads go wrong, and not because anything breaks. YouTube's Help Center says the default visibility depends on age: creators aged 13 to 17 default to private, and creators 18 or older default to public. So an adult who clicks through the upload screens quickly publishes the video to the world the moment processing allows it, often before the thumbnail is right or the description has links in it.

The other options exist for exactly that reason. Private keeps the video to you and people you invite. Unlisted lets anyone with the link watch it but keeps it out of search, your channel page and recommendations. Schedule picks a date and time for the video to go public on its own. And Public can be set as an instant Premiere, where the video plays as a shared event with a countdown and live chat.

Why does that matter beyond tidiness? Because the first hours of a public video are when the most people who already follow the channel see it at once, and a scheduled release or a Premiere concentrates them into the same window instead of spreading them across a day. That early window is also when the public view count makes its first impression on strangers, which is why some channels add YouTube views to a new upload. That moves the counter people see, not who YouTube recommends the video to.

How do you upload a video to YouTube from a computer?

From YouTube Studio, which is where every upload on a computer ends up:

1. Go to studio.youtube.com and sign in to the channel you want to post on.

2. Click Create in the top-right corner, then Upload videos.

3. Select the file, or drag it into the window. You can choose up to 15 files at once.

4. Fill in the details while it uploads: title, description, thumbnail (how to make a YouTube thumbnail has the size rules), playlist and the audience question, which asks whether the video is made for kids. The audience answer is required.

5. On the next screens, add optional elements such as subtitles, end screens and cards, and read the checks YouTube runs for copyright issues.

6. On the Visibility screen, choose Private, Unlisted, Public or Schedule, then click Save or Publish.

You do not have to wait for the progress bar before filling in details. The upload and the form run at the same time, so the transfer is usually done by the time the form is.

How do you upload a video to YouTube from a phone?

In the YouTube app on Android or iPhone:

1. Tap the plus button at the bottom of the screen.

2. Choose Video and pick the file from your gallery, then tap Next.

3. Add a title, which can be up to 100 characters, a description and the visibility setting.

4. Tap Next and answer whether the video is made for kids.

5. Tap Upload video.

One thing surprises people here. YouTube's Help Center says that if a video is 3 minutes or less and has a square or vertical aspect ratio, it is uploaded as a Short. A phone clip shot upright and kept short will go to the Shorts feed, not to your regular videos, and how long a YouTube Short can be explains why that line decides which counter the video feeds. Phone uploads also have fewer editing options than Studio on a computer, so many creators upload from the phone and finish the thumbnail, end screens and chapters in Studio later.

How big a file can you upload to YouTube?

YouTube's Help Center puts the ceiling at 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Files over 20 GB need an up-to-date browser to upload reliably.

There is a lower limit that new channels hit first, and it is about duration rather than size: by default, uploads are capped at a much shorter length until the channel completes phone verification. How to start a YouTube channel walks through that verification and the other features it unlocks. If a long video was rejected before you verified, upload it again afterwards; it does not unlock retroactively.

For format, YouTube accepts most common video files. MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safe default if you are exporting from an editor and do not know what to choose.

Should you upload as public, unlisted or private?

It depends on whether the video is finished and who it is for:

  • Private while you are still working on it. Nobody can see it except you and people you invite by email, so you can fix the thumbnail, chapters and description without an audience.
  • Unlisted for videos you want to share with specific people, such as a client review, a course lesson or a link in a newsletter. Anyone with the link can watch, but it does not appear in search, on your channel or in recommendations.
  • Public when it is ready for anyone. This is the setting that lets YouTube show the video in search, on your channel page and in recommendations.
  • Schedule when you want it to go public at a chosen moment, such as the time your audience is usually online.

Does switching from unlisted to public start over?

The video keeps its views and comments when you change visibility. What YouTube does not promise is a fresh launch: an unlisted video that sat for weeks goes public carrying whatever viewing it already had, and the people who most wanted it may have seen it already through the link. If the launch matters, keep it private until the release, not unlisted.

Can you schedule a YouTube upload?

Yes. On the Visibility screen, choose Schedule, set the date, time and time zone, and click Schedule. The video stays private until then and goes public on its own.

The alternative is a Premiere. You set the video to Public and turn on instant Premiere, or schedule a Premiere for later, and viewers get a watch page with a countdown and live chat before the video plays for everyone at once. A scheduled Premiere shows up on your channel ahead of time, so people can set a reminder.

Scheduling also gives processing time to finish. A video set to go public tomorrow has hours to complete its HD versions, so the first viewers see it in full quality instead of a blurry early version.

How long does YouTube take to process a video?

There is no fixed time. YouTube's Help Center says processing time depends on the video's quality, length and format, and on traffic, and that a video can be published once standard-definition processing is complete. Higher resolutions, such as HD and 4K, are generated afterwards and can take considerably longer for long or high-resolution files.

In practice, a short 1080p video is usually watchable in SD within minutes and in full quality soon after. A long 4K upload can take hours to reach its top resolution. During that gap, viewers see a lower-quality version, which is another reason to schedule a release rather than publishing the moment the upload ends.

Why is my upload stuck at processing?

Usually one of four things, roughly in order of how often they happen:

  • The page has not refreshed. Reload YouTube Studio or open the video's details again; the status is often already complete.
  • The upload did not finish transferring. Closing the tab or losing the connection before the file reaches 100 percent cancels it. Once it says processing, the file is on YouTube's side and the tab can be closed.
  • The file is unusual: a rare codec, a variable frame rate or a very high bitrate. Re-export as MP4 with H.264 and AAC and upload again.
  • It is simply large. High-resolution versions of long files take a long time, and the SD version can be watchable while HD is still pending.

When to start over

If a video shows no progress for many hours, deleting it and uploading again is usually faster than waiting. Do it before you share the link, because a re-upload gets a new URL and starts its views from zero. Once a video is out, how to get more views on YouTube covers where views come from, and what counts as a view on YouTube explains the August 2026 change to how they are counted. The early counter on a new upload is what buying YouTube views adds to; it does not change ranking, watch time or monetization. Every YouTube service is listed on the YouTube page.
