What Does Reach Mean on Facebook? Reach, Impressions and Views
Three labels on one screen, and only one of them counts people instead of appearances.
What does reach mean on Facebook? Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw your post, or your Page's content, at least once. Each person counts one time, however many times the post crossed their screen. That's why Facebook labels it people reached on a post.
Impressions and views are the other two numbers you'll see, and both count appearances rather than people. Impressions counted every time the post was on someone's screen. Views, the label Meta has been moving Facebook toward as its main number, count each time content is displayed or, for video, played — repeats included. So views and impressions are always at least as large as reach, and usually larger.
The difference is easiest to see with one person. Someone scrolls past your post in their feed in the morning. In the afternoon a friend shares it, and they see it again in that friend's share. That's one account reached and two views, or two impressions in the older wording.
Meta's own Help Center definitions follow that line: reach counts the people who saw your content at least once; impressions, and now views, count the times it was seen. Facebook shows reach as a deduplicated count directly on the post, which not every network does.
What makes Facebook confusing right now is that the three labels are living side by side. Meta has been moving Pages and its reporting tools to views as the headline figure, and some screens show reach and views together while others show only one. If you compare a number from last year's report with this year's and the label changed, you may be comparing different things.
Reach is also the number every visible count on a post is drawn from. Reactions, comments and shares come from people reached, so the likes on a Facebook post that a newcomer sees are really a small fraction of reach made public.
What does post reach mean on Facebook?
Post reach is the number of unique accounts that saw that specific post. It includes your followers who saw it in their feed, people who saw it because someone shared it, and anyone Facebook showed it to as a recommendation.
If you boosted the post, Facebook splits reach into organic and paid. Organic is the reach the post earned on its own — through followers, shares and recommendations. Paid is the reach the ad bought. The two can overlap, since one person can see both an organic and a paid appearance, which is why they don't always add up to the total.
People reached is simply how Facebook labels this on the post itself. Same metric, plainer name.
What is the difference between reach and impressions?
Reach counts people. Impressions count appearances.
If a hundred people each saw your post once, reach and impressions are both a hundred. If those hundred people each saw it three times, reach is still a hundred and impressions are three hundred.
The ratio between the two is frequency: how many times, on average, each person saw the content. On organic posts it's usually close to one. On ads it's the number advertisers watch most closely, because showing the same ad to the same person too often wastes money and annoys people.
Impressions is the label Meta has been retiring in favor of views, so on many Facebook screens today you'll find views where impressions used to be. What an impression means on X is a useful comparison: X still uses the word, and counts it its own way.
What is Facebook reach vs views?
Views count each time content is displayed on screen or, for a video or Reel, played — including repeats. Reach counts each person once.
For a text or photo post, views have essentially taken the place of impressions. For video, views count plays, so the same viewer watching twice adds two views and one reach.
Meta moved to views because it's one label that works across posts, Stories, Reels and videos, rather than impressions for some and plays for others. The practical effect for you: your headline number got bigger and less informative about people. When you want to know how many different people saw something, reach — or a count of unique viewers where Meta shows one — is still the number to use.
If the question is specifically about video, what counts as a view on a Facebook video covers how plays, three-second views and one-minute views relate.
Why don't my reach numbers add up?
Because reach is deduplicated across whatever period and set of content you're looking at.
If post A reached 500 people and post B reached 500, your Page's reach for the week is not necessarily 1,000. If 300 people saw both, the Page reached 700. Adding post reach together double-counts everyone who saw more than one post.
That's also why reach in the post, in the Page's professional dashboard and in Meta Business Suite can differ: each is deduplicating over a different window or a different set of content, and some reports are estimated rather than exact counts. Compare like with like — the same report, the same period — and don't add up reach figures from different posts to get a total.
What is a good reach on Facebook?
There's no published benchmark, and one wouldn't help much, because reach depends on how many followers you have, what format you posted and whether anyone shared it.
The more useful comparison is reach against your own follower count, post by post. A post that reached a small share of your followers didn't do well even with the people who chose to hear from you. A post whose reach ran past your follower count travelled — through shares or recommendations — and is worth studying to see why.
Watch the split between followers and non-followers where Facebook shows it. Non-follower reach is the part that grows a Page; follower reach is the part that keeps an existing audience. A Page whose reach comes almost entirely from followers is talking to the same room every time, and the fix for that is shares and Reels rather than posting more often.
How do you increase reach on Facebook?
**Earn shares.** A share puts your post in front of a different network, where every new person counts toward reach. On Facebook, sharing is the main way organic reach escapes your own followers.
**Start conversations.** Facebook has said for years that its feed favors posts that spark meaningful interaction between people. A post that gets people replying to each other in the comments tends to keep being shown.
**Use Reels.** Reels are recommended to people who don't follow you, which feed posts largely aren't. For a Page trying to reach new people, they're the widest door.
**Don't bait.** Posts that explicitly ask people to react, comment or share to game the feed are what Facebook calls engagement bait, and it has said it reduces the distribution of such posts.
**Grow the base.** Followers are the first audience of every post. The guide to growing Facebook followers covers that side.
Where the visible counts fit
Reach is private: only you and your Page's admins see it. The reactions, comments and shares under a post are public, and they're what a person reads in the second before deciding whether to stop scrolling.
A post showing almost no reactions reads as ignored, regardless of its reach. That's a judgement made by people, and it's separate from how Facebook distributes the post.
That is the part supplied Facebook post likes change: the public count a newcomer reads. They don't raise reach, which comes from shares, conversation and recommendations. Worth knowing too that the count under a post is a total of all reaction types, and what the Facebook reaction count really counts explains why, which is also why Facebook reactions are a separate option from likes.
Questions people ask about Facebook reach
What does reach mean on Facebook?
The number of unique accounts that saw your content at least once. Each person counts one time, however often they saw it.
What does people reached mean on Facebook?
It's the label Facebook uses for reach on an individual post: the number of different people who saw that post.
What is the difference between reach and impressions?
Reach counts people; impressions counted appearances. One person seeing a post three times is one reach and three impressions. Meta has been replacing impressions with views.
What is Facebook reach vs views?
Views count each display, or each play for video, including repeats. Reach counts each person once. Views are always at least as high as reach.
Why doesn't my Page reach equal the sum of my post reach?
Reach is deduplicated. Someone who saw several of your posts counts once in the Page's reach for the period, so adding post reach double-counts them.
How do I increase reach on Facebook?
Earn shares, start real conversations in the comments, use Reels to reach non-followers, avoid engagement bait, and grow the follower base that sees every post first.
