What is the Threads app used for?

Mostly for the kind of conversation that doesn't need a photo: quick opinions, news reactions, questions to followers, links and running commentary on live events. People use it to:

• Post short text updates, with or without images, videos or links.
• Reply to other people's posts and follow conversations as they develop.
• Repost or quote other people's posts to their own followers.
• Follow creators, brands and public figures they already follow on Instagram, in a text format.
• Search topics and join discussions around them, often through topic tags on posts.

Is Threads the same as X?

The format is similar: short posts, replies, reposts and quotes. The difference is the ownership and the account system. Threads is run by Meta and tied to Instagram identities, while X is a separate company with its own accounts. Moving between them means rebuilding an audience, not transferring one.

How does the Threads app work?

Once you're signed in, Threads works around a feed and a profile, like most social apps. How do threads work in practice:

• Your profile shows your posts, replies and reposts, and your follower count.
• The main feed mixes posts from accounts you follow with posts Threads recommends. A separate Following view shows only the accounts you follow, newest first.
• Replies appear under each post and can be threaded, so a conversation can run several levels deep.
• You can set your profile to public or private. A private profile means only approved followers see your posts.
• You can hide words, limit who can reply to a post, and mute or block accounts, using the same kinds of controls Instagram has.

What can you post on Threads?

A Threads post is text first. The limit is 500 characters per post, and you can attach photos, a video, a link with a preview, or a poll. Longer thoughts are usually written as a chain of posts, each replying to the one before, which is where the app's name comes from. You can edit a post for a short time after publishing, and you can choose who's allowed to reply: everyone, only profiles you follow, or only people you mention.

Nothing you post on Threads appears on Instagram unless you share it there yourself. The two apps can cross-promote, for example by showing a Threads post as a card in an Instagram Story, but each keeps its own feed, its own posts and its own counts.

What is the fediverse option?

Threads supports ActivityPub, the open protocol behind Mastodon and similar services, collectively called the fediverse. If you turn on fediverse sharing in settings, available for public profiles, your posts can be seen and followed from those other services, and replies and likes from them can appear on your posts. It's opt-in, and most Threads users never touch it.

Do you need an Instagram account for Threads?

In most places, yes. Threads was built on Instagram logins, and for most people signing up still means choosing Log in with Instagram. As of 2026, Meta also offers a standalone sign-up with an email address or phone number in some countries and regions, starting with ones where it faces stricter rules on linking services. Whether you see that option depends on where you are and on having an up-to-date app.

The Instagram link has become looser in other ways too. Since late 2023 you can delete your Threads profile without deleting your Instagram account, which wasn't possible at launch, and you can deactivate Threads on its own.

Is Threads a safe app? It's as safe as the other Meta apps, with the same trade-offs. Your posts on a public profile are visible to anyone, including people without an account, and Meta collects the same kinds of usage data it collects on Instagram. The practical safety controls are the ones you set yourself: a private profile, limits on who can reply or mention you, hidden words, and blocking.
