YouTube Play Button: How Many Subscribers for Silver, Gold and Diamond

The thresholds are public and simple. What catches creators out is the step between crossing one and receiving the plaque: YouTube reviews the channel first.

Updated September 2026

A YouTube Play Button is the physical plaque YouTube sends channels that reach a subscriber milestone: Silver at 100,000 subscribers, Gold at 1 million, Diamond at 10 million and Red Diamond at 100 million. YouTube calls them Creator Awards. They are not automatic: every channel is reviewed before it's offered one.

So the short answer to how many subscribers you need for a play button is 100,000, the Silver award, which is your first one. The longer answer is that the number is only the entry ticket. YouTube's help page on Creator Awards lists eligibility rules on activity, originality and policy standing, and a channel that crosses the line but fails one of them won't get the plaque until it's fixed, if at all.

The part most guides skip

The part of the process most people never see is the review. YouTube's help center says each channel is carefully reviewed to make sure the criteria are met, and it names the criteria: the channel has to be active, with uploads in the last six months; it can't have a Community Guidelines strike in the past 365 days or an active copyright strike; its main content has to be original; and it can't have been rejected or suspended from the YouTube Partner Program or be linked to a terminated account.

The count itself is checked too, in a quieter way. YouTube's help page on subscriber counts says closed accounts and subscribers identified as spam don't count toward a channel's total, and YouTube removes them in periodic cleanups. A channel sitting just above 100,000 can drop back under after one, and the award is only offered on the total that survives.

That is why two channels that hit the same public number on the same day can have very different experiences. One gets an invitation soon after. The other waits, or learns that its content mostly reuses other people's clips and doesn't qualify. The public counter shows the first part of the story; the review decides the rest. If you add YouTube subscribers to a channel, the same rule applies to them: the total that counts is the one YouTube keeps after its checks, not the one on a live counter.

How many YouTube play buttons are there?

Four standard tiers, each tied to a subscriber milestone, plus a rare custom award. From YouTube's Creator Awards page and the award's documented history:

  • Silver Creator Award: 100,000 subscribers. The first YouTube play button a channel can receive.
  • Gold Creator Award: 1,000,000 subscribers.
  • Diamond Creator Award: 10,000,000 subscribers.
  • Red Diamond Creator Award: 100,000,000 subscribers, introduced in 2020.
  • Custom Creator Award: a one-off design YouTube has made for a handful of channels at 50 million subscribers.

What happened to the smaller tiers?

YouTube used to describe Graphite and Opal tiers for channels under 10,000 subscribers. They came with benefits, not plaques, and were retired in 2021. Today the first physical award is the Silver play button at 100,000.

Does every channel of mine get its own award?

Awards belong to channels, not people. A creator who runs two channels that each pass 100,000 subscribers can receive a Silver plaque for each, provided each channel passes the review on its own. The plaque carries the channel's name, so it records the channel as it was when the award was issued. After Silver, the next plaque a channel can receive is Gold at 1 million, reviewed the same way.

How to get a YouTube play button

The steps, in the order they happen:

  • Reach the milestone in your exact subscriber total, which you see in YouTube Studio. The public count rounds down, so it won't show 100K before you have 100,000.
  • Stay eligible: keep uploading, keep your main content original, and avoid Community Guidelines and copyright strikes.
  • Wait for YouTube's review. There's nothing to apply for; YouTube checks the channel after it crosses the threshold.
  • If you're approved, YouTube notifies you with a way to redeem the award, usually a code you enter on the Creator Awards site.
  • Redeem it and confirm the shipping details. YouTube's help page says delivery takes roughly two to three weeks after redemption.

When do you get your first YouTube play button?

After your channel passes 100,000 subscribers and clears the review. YouTube doesn't publish a fixed review time, and it varies. If you've crossed the line and heard nothing for a while, check the eligibility list first. The usual culprit is a recent strike, a gap in uploads, or content that YouTube reads as reused rather than original.

How many subscribers do you need for a play button, exactly?

100,000 for Silver, counted on your real total rather than the rounded one. That distinction matters in both directions.

The public count rounds down to three significant digits, so it can't show 100K early. But the exact total in YouTube Studio moves after cleanups, and YouTube reviews the channel on the subscribers that count. A channel hovering at 100,200 may dip below the line when spam accounts are removed, then climb back. It's a good reason not to announce the plaque the day the number flips.

How to see your YouTube subscribers explains where the exact count lives and why the list of names is shorter than the total. For how the biggest channels' numbers are shown and why they look tied, see who has the most subscribers on YouTube.

Is the diamond play button real diamond?

No. The Diamond award is a silver-toned metal plaque set with a large piece of clear crystal cut in the shape of the play button triangle. The Red Diamond uses the same design with a dark red crystal. The Silver plaque is a nickel-based alloy and the Gold is gold-plated, so none of them are made of the precious material in their name. Their value is what they mark.

The materials have also changed over the years. The Silver plaque, for example, moved to a different alloy in 2017, so two Silver awards on two creators' shelves may not look identical.

Does the play button have anything to do with monetization?

No. The Partner Program has its own thresholds, far below 100,000 subscribers, and they include watch time or Shorts views as well as subscribers. A channel can earn from YouTube for years without ever reaching Silver, and a channel with a Silver plaque can still lose monetization if it breaks the Partner Program rules. YouTube monetization requirements lays out those thresholds.

The two do touch at one point: a channel that was rejected or suspended from the Partner Program isn't eligible for a Creator Award, according to YouTube's own list.

What actually gets a channel to 100,000 subscribers?

Videos people watch through and come back for. Subscribers follow viewing; they rarely arrive on their own. How to get more YouTube subscribers covers the organic side in detail.

The visible count does a separate job. Before someone has watched anything, the number under your channel name tells them whether the channel is established. Some creators choose to buy YouTube subscribers to make that first impression match the work, and add YouTube views on the videos a visitor lands on first. Be clear-eyed about it: added subscribers change the number people read, not the audience that watches, and they are subject to the same spam checks as every other subscriber. A plaque is not a reason to do it. Every YouTube service is listed on the YouTube page.

Questions people ask about the YouTube Play Button

How many subscribers do you need for a YouTube play button?

100,000 subscribers for the first one, the Silver play button. Gold is at 1 million, Diamond at 10 million and Red Diamond at 100 million.

Is the YouTube play button automatic?

No. YouTube reviews every channel that reaches a milestone. It must be active, original, free of recent strikes and in good standing with the Partner Program before it's offered an award.

How long does it take to get a play button after 100K?

YouTube doesn't publish a fixed review time. After you're approved and redeem the award, its help page says delivery takes roughly two to three weeks.

Is the diamond play button real diamond?

No. It's a silver-toned metal plaque set with a large clear crystal shaped like the play button. The Red Diamond uses a dark red crystal.

Can you buy a YouTube play button?

Not from YouTube. Awards are only sent to eligible channels after review. Plaques sold by third parties are replicas or resold originals, and YouTube doesn't recognize them.

Why didn't I get a play button at 100,000 subscribers?

Usually a failed eligibility check: a recent strike, no uploads in six months, or mostly reused content. Spam cleanups can also pull the exact total back under 100,000.
