Why Can't I Change Playback Speed on YouTube?

The control is usually missing rather than broken, and the screen you are watching on decides whether it is there at all.

Updated October 2026

Usually because of what is playing, not because of your account. The four causes that explain most cases where you cannot change playback speed on YouTube are a live stream, an ad currently on screen, a video embedded on somebody else's website, and an app version old enough to be missing the control.

None of those produce an error message. The speed entry is simply absent from the settings menu, or your choice is ignored, which reads like a bug and is not one.

It also helps to know that speed belongs to the player you happen to be using. It is not a setting a channel can switch off for its viewers, and it is not stored on your account, which is why the same video behaves differently on your laptop and on your TV.

The part most guides skip

The reason this question is so persistent is that YouTube gives you nothing to diagnose with. A greyed-out option would tell you the feature exists and is unavailable right now. An absent option tells you only that you are probably looking in the wrong place, so you keep opening the same menu.

It helps to know what the control normally looks like, in order to recognize when it has gone. On the standard player the speed list sits in the settings gear, with presets from 0.25x up to 2x; some clients add a custom slider that moves in finer steps.

On desktop there are shortcuts too — shift and the period key to speed up, shift and the comma key to slow down — and they work only while the player itself has focus, not while your cursor is in the search box or the comments. That detail accounts for a share of the reports on its own.

Everything below is a list of reasons the control is genuinely absent, in rough order of how often it turns out to be the answer.

Is the video live right now?

A live stream has no playback speed. You are watching something that is being produced as you watch it, and there is nothing ahead of the live edge to play faster.

This is the most common cause, and it catches people because the player looks identical to the normal one. Same gear icon, same menu, one entry missing.

Scrubbing backwards into the earlier part of the stream does not reliably bring the control back either. The dependable version is to wait: once the broadcast ends and is published as a regular video on the channel, it becomes an ordinary upload and the speed list returns with everything else.

If the live badge is on the player, stop looking for the setting.

Is an ad playing?

An ad is a separate piece of video running inside the same player, and your speed choice belongs to the main video rather than to the ad. So the ad plays at normal speed, and if you open the menu during it you are looking at the controls for something other than what you came to watch.

This is easy to misread, because the sequence feels like cause and effect. You set 2x, an ad starts, playback goes back to normal, and it looks as though the setting was rejected.

Wait for the ad to finish and check the menu again on the video itself. In most cases your choice is still there, and it was applied the moment the video resumed. Mid-roll ads cause the same confusion halfway through a long video, which is why people report speed resetting at random points.

Are you watching through an embed on another site?

A YouTube video embedded in a blog post, a news article or a course page is playing in a cut-down player, and the site doing the embedding decides how much of the control set is exposed.

Some embeds show the full gear menu. Some show a reduced one. Some strip the chrome down to little more than play and pause, which removes the settings menu and the speed list with it.

There is nothing to fix from your side, because the choice was made in the page's code. Open the video on YouTube itself, through the title in the corner of the embed or by copying the link, and you get the whole menu back. This is also the usual answer when speed works everywhere except on one site you use often.

Is the app out of date, or is something else setting the speed?

An old build of the mobile app can be missing controls that the current one has, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to rule out. Update the app from your store, close it completely, reopen it.

On a computer, the equivalent check is the browser. A very old browser version, or one with scripting partly disabled, can leave the player without the pieces it needs for speed changes.

The other candidate is a browser extension. Several popular extensions exist purely to control video speed, and when one of them is holding playback at a value, the native menu will appear to fight you — you set 1x, something sets it back.

A quick test separates the two: open the same video in a private window with extensions off. If speed works there, the problem is an extension rather than YouTube.

Why does the menu look different on every screen?

Because YouTube is several different players sharing one library, and each surface carries its own control set.

Shorts is the clearest example. It is a separate viewing surface built around swiping, and it does not carry the settings gear the standard player has. If you need speed on a short video, look for it in the regular player rather than in the Shorts feed.

TV apps and consoles run their own builds with controls designed for a remote, so what is available there is not guaranteed to match the phone. Casting is a related case: once you cast, the video is being played by the other device, so the control that matters is the one on the device doing the playing.

YouTube Music is a different app again, with a player built for audio. The same account, the same video and a different screen can genuinely give you a different answer, and nothing is broken in either place.

What if none of those explain it?

Then work through the cheap checks first. Reload the page or restart the app, since a half-loaded player drops controls. Sign in, if you are signed out. Try the same video in a different browser.

If speed works on other videos but not on one, the video is the variable — check whether it is live, premiering, or wrapped in an embed. If it stops working across every video on one device, the device is the variable, and the app or browser version is where to look.

One more thing worth saying plainly: the setting is not meant to follow you around. It is remembered by the player you set it in, not stored on your account, so it does not sync between your phone and your laptop. That is the design, not a fault.

Questions people ask about YouTube playback speed

Why is the playback speed option missing on YouTube?

Most often because the video is live, an ad is playing, or you are watching an embedded player on another website. In each case the entry is absent from the settings menu rather than greyed out, which is why it reads as a bug.

Can you change playback speed on a live stream?

No. There is nothing ahead of the live edge to play faster, so the control is not offered. Once the stream ends and is published as a regular video on the channel, speed becomes available like any other upload.

Why does my playback speed reset to normal?

Usually an ad started, and ads play at normal speed because your choice applies to the main video. Speed is also remembered per player rather than on your account, so it does not carry across devices.

Can a channel disable playback speed for its videos?

No. Speed is a property of the player you are watching in, not a setting in a creator's upload options. If it is missing, the cause is what is playing or where you are playing it, not a decision by the channel.

Why can't I change playback speed in the YouTube app?

Check the app version first, since an old build can be missing controls the current one has. If updating does not fix it, confirm the video is not live and that you are in the standard player rather than in Shorts.

What is the keyboard shortcut for playback speed on YouTube?

On desktop, shift with the period key speeds playback up and shift with the comma key slows it down. They only work while the player has focus, so click the video first.
