Why Does YouTube Shorts Play With Sound?
YouTube runs two different players. The previews in your Home feed start muted; the Shorts player is built around audio and starts with it on.
Why does YouTube Shorts play with sound? Because opening Shorts puts you in a full-screen player meant to be watched with audio, unlike the previews in your Home feed and search results, which YouTube's Help Center says start on mute with captions on. As of October 2026, YouTube documents no setting to make the Shorts player start muted.
What you can control is the muted preview player in your feeds, through Playback in feeds, and autoplay in the regular video player. For the Shorts player itself, the volume is your phone's or browser's. The sections below separate the two players, explain each setting and cover the opposite problem: Shorts that play with no sound at all.
YouTube has two ways of starting a video without you pressing play, and they handle sound differently. The inline player is the preview that begins as you scroll the Home feed or search results. YouTube's Help Center describes it plainly: videos begin to play on mute with captions turned on, and you can turn the sound on if you want. The Shorts player is the full-screen vertical feed you enter by tapping Shorts. There, each Short starts as soon as it's on screen, and it plays its audio, because the format is built on sound: music, voiceovers and trends that depend on a specific clip.
That's why a quiet Home feed can be followed by a loud Short. You moved from a preview designed for scrolling into a player designed for watching.
The sound question connects to a count question that creators ask. Since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when a Short starts to play or replays, with no minimum watch time, and on August 24, 2026 it extended that rule to all formats. A Short that starts on someone's screen, loud or not, is counted, and YouTube keeps the stricter engaged views figure for monetization. That public view count is the number YouTube Shorts views adds to, from the Short's link; it doesn't change what the Shorts feed shows anyone.
How do you mute YouTube Shorts by default?
There's no built-in default for the Shorts player. YouTube's Help Center pages on watching Shorts, on the inline player and on autoplay, as of October 2026, describe no setting that makes Shorts start muted. What works in practice:
- Phone: turn the media volume down before opening Shorts. On most phones the volume buttons control media volume while a video is playing, and the level stays where you left it.
- iPhone: the ring and silent switch or Action button silences ringtones and alerts, not media, so a Short can still play aloud with the phone on silent. Use the volume buttons instead.
- Computer: lower the system volume or mute the browser tab. A muted tab stays muted as you scroll from Short to Short.
Captions as the quiet alternative
If you want to follow a Short without sound, turn on captions from the player's menu when the Short offers them. Many Shorts also carry on-screen text because their creators expect some viewers to watch muted.
Why does the Home feed play muted but Shorts don't?
Because the Home feed preview is the inline player, and its settings live under Playback in feeds. YouTube's Help Center gives the path in the app: tap your profile picture, then Settings, then General, then Playback in feeds, and choose one of three options:
- Always on: previews play on Wi-Fi and on mobile data.
- Wi-Fi only: previews play only when you're on Wi-Fi.
- Off: previews don't play at all; you see thumbnails.
What this setting doesn't change
Playback in feeds applies to the Home tab and search results, the surfaces the Help Center names. It doesn't turn the Shorts player into a muted player. If what you want is fewer Shorts in the first place, is there a way to disable YouTube Shorts covers what actually works.
Can you turn off autoplay for Shorts?
YouTube's autoplay setting is about the regular video player: when a video ends, the next one starts. The Help Center gives the path on Android and iPhone as your profile picture, then Settings, then Autoplay, then switching it off, and on a computer the Autoplay switch sits at the bottom of the player. It also notes that if you scroll past the player or type a comment or search, the next video won't start even with autoplay on.
The Shorts feed works differently. Each Short begins when it fills the screen, and moving to the next one is your swipe or scroll. The Help Center's autoplay page doesn't describe a switch that stops a Short starting when you land on it, and as of October 2026 the Shorts help page lists the controls as tapping to pause, swiping or clicking down for the next Short and up for the previous one.
So the practical control is the pause tap and the volume, not a setting.
Why do some YouTube Shorts have no sound?
Either the problem is on your side, or the Short really has no audio. Start with your side, using the steps YouTube's Help Center gives for missing sound:
- Make sure sound is turned on for your device or browser, including the media volume, not just the ringer.
- Check your device's sound settings, such as output going to a Bluetooth speaker or headphones you aren't wearing.
- Restart the app or browser and the device.
- On a computer, check that the browser tab isn't muted.
When the Short itself is silent
If one Short is silent while others play fine, the creator may have published it without audio or the audio may have been removed after publishing. If every Short is silent but long videos have sound, update the app, then clear its cache; a stale app version is the usual cause.
Does a Short that autoplays count as a view?
For the public count, yes. YouTube's Help Center page on how engagement metrics are counted says that, beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. Shorts moved to that rule first, on March 31, 2025. A Short that starts on screen while you scroll past is a view under that definition, whether you heard it or not.
The same page notes that YouTube may discard low-quality playbacks. And for creators, the figure that matters for revenue and Partner Program eligibility is engaged views, which still require someone to keep watching. What counts as a view on YouTube has the two counts side by side, and why my Shorts are not getting pushed explains how to read the swipe-away rate in Studio.
This is also why Shorts creators obsess over the first second. In a feed that starts with sound, a Short is judged before the viewer decides to stay, and the opening audio is part of that judgment.
How should creators handle sound on a Short?
Assume both kinds of viewer. Most people meet a Short in the Shorts player with audio on, so the sound should work from the first frame: no silent intro, no slow fade. Some watch with the phone turned down, so the point should also be readable on screen through text or captions.
Length shapes the audio too. Shorts can run up to 3 minutes, and how long a YouTube Short can be covers what changes near the limit. A track that suits 20 seconds rarely carries 90.
The count under a new Short is the other thing a viewer reads in that first second. Buy YouTube Shorts views adds to that public count from the Short's /shorts/ link, paid from a funded balance; it doesn't change the Shorts feed's decisions or the engaged views YouTube uses for monetization. Every other YouTube guide and service is on the YouTube page.
Questions people ask about sound on YouTube Shorts
Why do YouTube Shorts play with sound automatically?
Because the Shorts player is a full-screen player built for audio, unlike the Home feed previews, which YouTube says start on mute with captions. Each Short starts with sound when it fills the screen.
Can I make YouTube Shorts start muted?
YouTube documents no such setting as of October 2026. Lower your media volume before opening Shorts, or mute the browser tab on a computer.
Where is the Playback in feeds setting?
In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, General and Playback in feeds, and choose Always on, Wi-Fi only or Off. It controls the muted previews in Home and search.
Why are my YouTube Shorts silent?
Check media volume, the audio output such as Bluetooth, and restart the app and device. If only one Short is silent, that Short may have no audio.
Does a Short count as a view if I scroll past it?
For the public view count, yes: since March 31, 2025, YouTube counts a Shorts view when it starts to play. Engaged views, used for monetization, require more watching.
Does turning off autoplay stop Shorts from playing?
No. The autoplay setting controls whether the next video starts after one ends in the regular player. In the Shorts feed, each Short starts when you swipe to it.
