YouTube Thumbnail Size in 2026
1280 x 720 still works everywhere. YouTube's own help page now recommends going bigger, raised the desktop file limit, and treats Shorts differently. Here is what each number means in practice.
Quick answer
- Standard size: 1280 x 720 px, 16:9. YouTube's help page now recommends up to 3840 x 2160 (4K) for sharper display on large screens.
- Minimum: 640 px wide. Below that the upload is rejected.
- File size: up to 50 MB when you upload in YouTube Studio on a computer, 2 MB from the mobile app.
- Formats: JPG or PNG (GIF and BMP are also accepted).
- Shorts: 9:16 thumbnails (2160 x 3840 recommended), added only from YouTube Studio on a computer. Custom thumbnails need a verified account.
The safe choice for 2026 is to design at 1920 x 1080 or larger in 16:9, export as JPG, and keep the file under 2 MB so you can also upload from your phone. Everything that matters (face, title words) goes inside the centre and away from the bottom-right corner, where YouTube prints the video length.

Is 1280 x 720 still the right size?
Yes, 1280 x 720 is still accepted and looks fine on phones, but uploading at 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160 keeps text crisp on TVs and large monitors.
Larger files are only worth it if the source image is genuinely sharp. Upscaling a small image to 4K adds file size, not detail.
The thumbnail safe zone
Keep faces and text inside the central area and out of the bottom-right corner, because YouTube overlays the duration there and crops thumbnails differently on the home feed, search and TV.
- Leave roughly 10% margin on every side.
- Avoid the bottom-right ~20% x 15%: the timestamp sits on top of it.
- Use 3–5 words at most; the thumbnail is often shown at 168 x 94 px in suggestions.
- On the home feed, vertical videos may get an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail instead of yours.
YouTube Shorts thumbnails
Shorts use 9:16 thumbnails, and a custom one can only be added from YouTube Studio on a computer, not from the phone app.
Many Shorts are discovered in the swipe feed, where no thumbnail is shown at all, so the first frame matters more. See how to change the thumbnail on YouTube Shorts.
How to make and upload a thumbnail
Design at 16:9, export a JPG under 2 MB, then upload it in YouTube Studio under the video's details; our guide on how to make a YouTube thumbnail covers the design side.
- Verify the channel.
Custom thumbnails need phone verification in YouTube Studio settings. - Export at 1920 x 1080 JPG.
Quality 80–90 keeps most files under 2 MB. - Upload in Studio.
Content → the video → Details → Thumbnail → Upload file. - Check it small.
Look at the thumbnail at phone size before publishing; if the words are unreadable, use fewer.
A good thumbnail gets the click; views decide the rest
A thumbnail raises click-through rate, but YouTube keeps recommending a video only if people keep watching, so the thumbnail and the first 30 seconds have to make the same promise.
For a video that needs an initial push, YouTube views on Hourden start at $1.83 per 1,000 using only the video link. More creator calculators and generators are in our free tools.
