Open the comments on any video, type the code exactly as written - lowercase, inside square brackets, no spaces - and post. The brackets and the word disappear and the emoji shows in their place. You can put several in one comment.
They convert in comments. In captions, bios and DMs the code usually stays as plain text, so test before you rely on it there. If a code shows as text, check the spelling and update the app.
Why some people use them
They only render inside TikTok, so they read as an in-joke to people who know the app - which is part of why comments with them get noticed. The dumpling set (wow, joyful, hehe, slap, cute...) is the most recognisable.
