How to Change Your Profile Picture on Facebook

The steps take seconds. What surprises people is that the new photo is public no matter what, and that Facebook announces it to your friends unless you tell it not to.

Updated October 2026

How to change profile picture on Facebook: on a computer, open your profile, click the camera icon on your current profile picture, then choose a photo or upload a new one and save. In the app, tap your profile picture, pick a new photo and save. You can stop the change being shared to Feed.

Those are the steps in Facebook's Help Center as of October 2026, and they take less than a minute. The two things worth knowing before you do it are less obvious. Your current profile picture is always public, whatever your other privacy settings say. And the change is announced to your friends by default, so if you would rather swap it quietly, you need to switch the sharing off on the same screen.

The part most guides skip

Facebook treats a handful of profile details as public information, and its Help Center lists them: your name, gender, username and user ID, your profile picture and your cover photo. These are part of what Facebook calls your public profile, and they exist so people can recognize you before they decide to add or follow you. There is no audience selector for the current profile picture, and no setting that hides it from people who are not your friends.

That makes the profile picture the most-seen image on your account. It appears next to every comment you leave in a public post, every reaction in a group, every message request you send, and in search results, to people who will never open your profile.

It is also the first thing a stranger checks when deciding whether an account is real. A blank silhouette or a blurry crop reads as a throwaway, and so does a profile with almost no followers. Since November 2024, a standard Facebook profile can be followed only by friends, and turning on professional mode is what lets the public follow it. On a profile in that mode, or on a Page, Facebook followers add to the count a visitor sees next to the picture; they do not change who Facebook shows your posts to.

How do you change your Facebook profile picture on a computer?

Facebook's Help Center gives these steps for a computer:

1. Click your profile picture in the top right of Facebook, then click your profile name.

2. Click the camera icon at the bottom right of your current profile picture.

3. Select a photo you already uploaded, upload a new one, or add a frame to the picture you have.

4. Crop it, adjust the thumbnail if you need to, and click Save.

The thumbnail is the small circular version people see beside your name in comments and chats. Facebook lets you reposition it separately: when choosing the picture, use Edit thumbnail, then zoom and drag until the face sits in the middle, and save.

How do you change your profile picture in the Facebook app?

The quickest route on a phone is the profile itself: open your profile, tap your profile picture, choose the option to select or upload a new one, then pick the photo from your gallery and save.

Facebook's Help Center also documents a route through Accounts Center, which is useful if you manage several profiles:

1. Open the menu and go to Settings and privacy, then Settings.

2. Tap See more in Accounts Center, then Profiles.

3. Choose the profile, tap Profile picture, then Upload new photo.

The app also offers an animated option on some versions, turning a still photo into a short animation from a set of presets. It replaces the picture like any other upload.

How do you change your profile picture without posting it?

On the screen where you save the new picture, look for the option to share the update to Feed and switch it off before you tap Save. The picture changes on your profile immediately, but no post about it appears in your friends' Feeds.

Two things to know about this:

  • It only stops the Feed post. The new picture still shows everywhere your picture appears, so anyone who looks at your profile or sees your comments will notice it.
  • If you forget and the update is posted, you can delete that post afterwards from your profile. Deleting the post does not remove the picture; it only removes the announcement.

Can you set a temporary profile picture?

Yes. Facebook lets you set a picture that switches back on its own:

1. Click your profile picture in the top right, then your name.

2. Click your profile picture, then Choose profile picture.

3. Select Upload Photo or Add Frame.

4. Click Make Temporary and choose when to switch back to your previous picture, then save.

When the time runs out, Facebook restores the previous picture automatically. The expired picture is not deleted; the Help Center notes that it stays visible in your profile pictures album.

To end it early, click your profile picture and choose Switch to previous picture now. Temporary pictures are mostly used for frames, such as an event, a cause or a team, where the frame is only meant to stay for a week or a season.

Is the profile picture always public?

The current one is. Facebook's Help Center lists your profile picture among the details that are always public, along with your name, username and cover photo. People who are not your friends, and people without an account, can see it.

What you control is what you put there. If you want privacy, use a picture that does not show your face, or one that only people who know you would recognize. Locking your Facebook profile adds one more layer where it's offered: strangers see the small picture but can't open it full size. Who visits your profile to look at it is a separate question, and Facebook does not tell you; can you see who views your Facebook profile explains why the apps that promise a visitor list cannot deliver one.

Who can see your old profile pictures?

Old profile pictures stay in the Profile pictures album unless you delete them, and they do not lose their visibility just because you replaced them. A picture that was public when it was your profile picture can still be found there by anyone who opens the album.

For older pictures, you can open each photo and change its audience to Friends or Only me from the photo's options, or delete it. That is the main reason to look through the album occasionally: years of profile pictures can say more about you than the current one.

The current picture is the exception. Its audience cannot be narrowed while it is in use.

Why won't Facebook let me change my profile picture?

Facebook's own troubleshooting starts with the basics, and they fix most cases:

  • Update the Facebook app to the latest version, or close and restart it.
  • Check that you are on a reliable Wi-Fi or data connection, since an upload that drops halfway fails silently.
  • Refresh the page and try again if you are on a computer.
  • Try a different photo. A very large file, an unusual format or an image that breaks Facebook's Community Standards may be rejected or removed.

If none of that works

Report the problem from the Help menu in the app so Facebook can look at the account. An account under a restriction can lose the ability to change some profile details for a while, which is a different issue from a technical error.

What size is the Facebook profile picture?

Facebook's Help Center gives a minimum size of 180 pixels across, but that is a floor, not a target. The picture is shown as a circle at many sizes, from a large version on your profile to a tiny one next to a comment, so a sharp square image of several hundred pixels per side looks better everywhere.

Keep the subject in the middle of the frame. The circle crops the corners, and the thumbnail editor lets you fix the framing if a face ends up off-centre.

A clear picture is half of what makes a profile look real to a stranger; the other half is the activity around it. How to grow Facebook followers covers professional mode and the follower count, and buying Facebook followers adds to that public count on a Page or a profile with public follows, without a password. Who sees your Stories is a separate list, covered in who views your Facebook Stories. Every Facebook service is listed on the Facebook page.
