Can You See Who Views Your Facebook Stories
The list is nominal and complete while the story is alive. What it never reports is the screenshot, which is the thing people assume it does.
Yes. Open your own story and the viewer count at the bottom opens into a list of names. It covers everyone who watched, including people who are not friends if the story was public.
The list lives as long as the story does. When the frame expires or is deleted, the names go with it.
Facebook does not notify anyone about screenshots of a story, and it does not tell you when someone takes one.
Two platforms set the expectation here, and neither of them is Facebook.
Snapchat notifies about screenshots, and Instagram does it for disappearing photos sent in messages. People carry that assumption to Facebook stories and are wrong in both directions: they behave cautiously about screenshotting other people's stories, and they assume their own frames are protected.
On Facebook, taking a screenshot of a story is silent. No notification, no icon in the viewer list, no record for either party.
What Facebook does give you is unusually complete in the other direction. The viewer list names people rather than counting them, including people who do not follow you when the story is public, which is more than the feed gives you for an ordinary post.
The practical consequence is simple and worth stating plainly: a story is a public-ish broadcast with an attendance sheet, not a private message. Post accordingly, and if a frame should not be screenshotted, it should not be a story.
Reading the viewer list
Open your story and tap the viewer count at the bottom of the frame. Each frame has its own list.
Names are listed, not aggregated, and reactions and replies appear alongside the people who sent them.
The order is not chronological and is not a ranking of anything. Reading intent into it is the most common mistake people make with this screen.
For a Page story, the same data appears in the Page's insights, where it survives the frame.
When the list disappears
The names are available while the story is live. Once it expires, they are gone from the app.
Deleting a frame removes its viewer list immediately, which is why checking before deleting is the right order.
The archived copy of a story does not carry the viewer list. The archive stores the content, not the audience.
Page insights are the exception: Page story metrics persist there, though as counts rather than as a list of names.
Who can see your story in the first place
Story audience is a separate setting from your post audience. It can be friends, public, or a custom list.
Custom lists work both ways: share with specific people, or hide from specific people. Hiding is silent.
If a story is public, it can be seen by people who follow you rather than only by friends, and those viewers appear in the list like everybody else.
A story shared to a Page uses the Page's audience, which is everyone, and the list reflects that.
What is not recorded
Screenshots, as above. No notification to either side.
Re-watching is not shown. The list says who watched, not how many times.
People who skipped the frame quickly are still counted as viewers. Facebook does not distinguish a glance from a watch here.
And people who saw the story while logged out of your audience, such as on a shared device, are counted as the account that was signed in.
If the list is empty or wrong
A story with zero views and a healthy friend count usually means the audience setting is narrower than you think, often after a one-off custom list was left in place.
Viewer lists can lag by a short period, particularly in the first minutes after posting.
People who blocked you or who you have hidden stories from will never appear, and Facebook does not flag their absence.
And a story posted to a Page shows Page viewers, which are counted separately from anything on your profile.
Questions people ask about story viewers
Does Facebook tell you who viewed your story?
Yes, by name, for each frame, while the story is live. The list disappears when the frame expires or is deleted.
Does Facebook notify screenshots of stories?
No. Screenshots of Facebook stories are not announced to anyone, and there is no record of them.
Can I see who viewed an expired story?
No. On a profile the list goes with the frame. Page stories keep aggregate numbers in Page insights.
Can people see my story if we are not friends?
Only if the story audience is public. Public stories can be watched by followers, and they appear in the viewer list.
Does the order of the viewer list mean anything?
No. It is not a ranking of closeness or interest, despite what the internet repeats.
Can I hide a story from one person?
Yes, with a custom audience. The person is not told, and it applies to the stories you post after setting it.

- followers on a Facebook profile — Only the people connected to you ever reach the story tray, so that list is the ceiling on every viewer count, and followers on a Facebook profile acts on it.
- deleting a frame — The viewer list dies with the frame, which is why deleting a frame is a decision to make after you have looked at it.
- whether profile views exist at all — Stories name their viewers but the profile does not, and whether profile views exist at all settles the other half of the question.
