How to Clear 'You May Like' on TikTok Search
The suggestions under the search bar come from your own history and from what's trending. You can't switch them off, but you can change what feeds them.
How to clear You may like on TikTok: open Search and delete your past searches, then use the feedback link under the suggestions to flag the ones you don't want and tap Refresh. Outside the EU there's no switch to turn the section off, because TikTok builds it from your search history, what you watch and what's trending.
That last part explains why the suggestions sometimes look like nothing you've ever searched for. You may like isn't a record of your searches. It's a prediction, made from a mix of your activity and other people's, and clearing one input doesn't stop the others. The steps below work on the inputs you control, in the order that changes the most.
TikTok explains its search suggestions in its Help Center article on how it recommends content, read on October 4, 2026. The search features, it says, also recommend search terms, and three groups of signals shape them: your previous search behaviour and the content you like, share, comment on, watch to the end or skip; information about the content, such as how well it matches a term and the hashtags and sounds it uses; and your device settings, language and location.
So You may like has two halves. One is personal: it reflects what you searched and watched. The other isn't: some recommendations also take into account what people with similar interests engaged with, and trending searches surface for everyone in an area. Clearing your history only touches the first half, which is why a strange term can come back even on a freshly cleaned account.
The same system works for creators in reverse. A suggested search is a doorway into a set of results, and people choosing between videos in those results read the view count first, which is the public number TikTok views adds to for a video.
How do you get rid of 'you may like' on TikTok?
Work through these in order. The first two change the suggestions the most:
- Delete your search history. Tap the search icon, then the X next to any past search to remove it. In current versions you can also clear it all from Settings and privacy, then Activity center, then Search history, where Select and Select all let you delete everything at once.
- Flag the suggestions you don't want. In recent versions there's a feedback link at the bottom of the suggestions list, labelled Help us improve, where you pick a reason and tick the terms to remove. Tap Refresh afterwards to load a new set.
- Clear your watch history in the same Activity center if the suggestions follow videos you watched rather than things you searched.
- Adjust your topics. Settings and privacy, then Content preferences, then Manage topics, lets you turn down subjects you're seeing too much of.
- Mark videos Not interested. Press and hold a video in your feed and choose Not interested; it tells TikTok to show less of that kind of content, and searches built around it fade with it.
Why does TikTok show weird search suggestions?
Because some of them aren't about you. TikTok's own description of its recommendation systems says certain predictions take into account what people with similar interests engaged with. If accounts that watch what you watch also search for something odd, that term can reach your suggestions without you ever typing it.
Trending searches add to the mix. A term that many people in your area are searching, or clicking when it's suggested, gets shown to more people, which makes it more searched, which keeps it suggested. That loop is why the same strange phrase can turn up for a whole group of friends at once.
And some suggestions follow your viewing rather than your typing. A video you watched to the end, even by accident, is one of the signals TikTok names for search recommendations, so a single late-night rabbit hole can leave a trail in the search page the next day.
Does clearing search history change 'you may like'?
Yes, but only the personal half. TikTok lists your previous search behaviour as one of the signals for recommended search terms, so deleting it removes that input. Suggestions that came from your searches usually change after you clear history and restart the app.
What it doesn't remove is everything else on the list: your watch and like history, your location and language, and trends among similar users. If the suggestions barely change after clearing searches, the source is one of those. Clearing watch history and marking a few videos Not interested usually moves them further.
Clearing the app cache is a different thing. It frees storage and fixes loading glitches, as how to clear cache on TikTok explains, but it doesn't touch your history or your suggestions, which are stored with your account.
Can you turn off search suggestions on TikTok?
For most people, no. As of October 2026 there's no switch that hides You may like, and the section is part of the search page for every account.
The exception is regional. TikTok's Help Center describes two personalisation settings, personalised feeds and personalised search, both on by default. Turning off personalised search shows non-personalised search results and recommendations and changes the suggested search queries. TikTok notes that this option is only available in the EU and Kazakhstan.
Everywhere else, the controls are indirect: history, feedback on suggestions, topics and Not interested. If the bigger problem is the For You feed rather than search, how to reset the TikTok algorithm covers the one real reset button TikTok has.
Does 'you may like' show what others searched?
Not in the sense people worry about. It isn't a list of what a particular friend, a partner or someone on your phone searched for. Search history is tied to the account that made it, and suggestions built from it show on that account.
What it can reflect is what people like you searched, in aggregate. TikTok says some of its predictions draw on the interactions of other people who appear to have similar interests, and trending terms rise for everyone nearby. So a suggestion might be popular among people with your tastes without having anything to do with a specific person.
One real exception: if someone else uses your phone while logged in to your account, their searches become part of your history, and your suggestions will show it. Clearing search history removes those.
How do you report a search suggestion?
Use the feedback link at the bottom of the suggestions. In recent versions it's labelled Help us improve: tap it, choose the reason, such as suggestions that aren't interesting or that contain inappropriate terms, then tick the specific terms and submit. Refresh the list afterwards.
For content that breaks the rules rather than just being unwanted, report the videos themselves from their share menu, which sends them to TikTok's moderation. TikTok says it doesn't show content in search results that it identifies as inappropriate, so reporting the source videos is what removes the term's results, not only the suggestion.
If a suggestion appears for a teenager's account, Family Pairing and the account's content settings give a parent more control than the search page does.
What do search suggestions mean for creators?
They're a free route to your video. A term that TikTok suggests is a term people tap without typing, so videos that match it well are shown to an audience that arrived from the suggestion. TikTok says that for search, information about the content, such as how closely a video matches the specific term, usually matters more than other factors. Clear wording in the caption and on screen helps a video match the searches it should.
Once someone lands on the results, they choose between videos, and the view count is part of what they read. TikTok views adds to that count for one public video, with the video link and nothing else; it changes the number shown, not how well the video matches a search. How the TikTok algorithm works covers the signals behind search and the For You feed, and every TikTok service is on the TikTok page.
Questions people ask about TikTok's You may like
How do you clear You may like on TikTok?
Delete your search history from the search page or from Activity center, flag unwanted terms with the feedback link under the suggestions, then tap Refresh. Clearing watch history and marking videos Not interested changes them further.
Can you turn off You may like on TikTok?
Not outside the EU and Kazakhstan. There, turning off personalised search changes suggested queries. Elsewhere, as of October 2026, the section can't be hidden, only influenced.
Why is TikTok suggesting searches I never made?
TikTok builds suggestions from your watch activity, trending terms and what people with similar interests engage with, not only from your own searches. A term can appear without you ever typing it.
Does clearing TikTok search history reset suggestions?
It removes suggestions that came from your searches. Ones driven by your watch history, location or trends among similar users stay until those inputs change.
Can other people see what I searched on TikTok?
No. Your search history belongs to your account. You may like can reflect what similar users search in aggregate, but it doesn't show a specific person's searches.
How do I report a bad TikTok search suggestion?
Use the Help us improve link at the bottom of the suggestions, pick a reason and tick the terms. For harmful content, report the videos themselves so moderation can review them.
