How to Reset the TikTok Algorithm

You can throw away everything TikTok learned about you without losing a single account you follow.

Updated September 2026

There is a real control for this, which is unusual enough to say first. How to reset the TikTok algorithm is not a trick or a workaround — TikTok publishes a refresh option inside Content preferences in your settings, and using it discards the recommendation history behind your For You feed and starts it over.

You do not lose your account, your videos, your followers, or the accounts you follow. The Following feed is untouched. What you lose is everything the app inferred about your taste from what you have been watching, which is the entire point.

After it runs, the For You feed goes generic for a while and then re-narrows based on what you do next. That transition period is normal and it is also the part people abandon too early.

The part most guides skip

The reason this button can exist here and not elsewhere is structural. TikTok's For You feed is built primarily on watch behaviour — what you finished, what you replayed, what you scrolled past — rather than on who you follow. The recommendation state is therefore a separate object from your social graph, and separate objects can be deleted independently.

Instagram and YouTube do not work that way. Their recommendations are entangled with subscriptions, follows, and a long account history that also drives the rest of the product. A button that discarded your YouTube recommendations would be reaching into the same data that decides your subscriptions feed and your homepage, and there is no clean line to cut along. The closest available action is deleting watch history, which is not the same thing and has broader consequences.

So the asymmetry is not TikTok being more generous. It is TikTok having a recommendation system that is cleanly detachable from the social one, which is also why the For You feed can show you a stranger's video over a friend's.

Where the control is

In Settings and privacy, under Content preferences. The refresh option sits there alongside the other controls for what you see, and TikTok explains what it does before you confirm.

Read that explanation rather than skipping it, because the wording tells you the current scope, and scope is the thing most likely to change between when this was written and when you use it. The app is the authority on its own feature.

If you cannot find it, the usual cause is an out-of-date app rather than the feature being unavailable to you. Update first and look again before concluding it is not there.

What it clears and what it keeps

It clears the recommendation profile: the accumulated signal from your watch history that shapes which videos get served to you.

It keeps your account and everything social about it. Followers, following, your own posts, your saved videos, your messages. Nobody is unfollowed and nobody is notified. This is the reassurance most people are looking for before they press it, and it is straightforwardly true.

It also keeps your explicit preferences where those are stored separately — filtered keywords and similar settings are controls you set, not inferences the app made, so they are not part of what gets discarded. Check them afterwards anyway, since confirming takes a moment and assuming is how you end up surprised.

The rebuild period

Immediately after, the feed is broad and generic, because the app has no signal about you and is showing you widely popular material while it works out what you want.

That period ends fastest if you are deliberate during it. Watching something to the end is the strongest positive signal you can send; scrolling away quickly is the strongest negative one. Long-pressing a video to say you are not interested is more direct than either. The feed narrows in response to what you do in these first sessions, so the sessions immediately after a refresh carry more weight than normal ones.

The failure mode is passive scrolling during the rebuild. If you drift through the generic feed without engaging, you teach it that the generic feed is fine, and the result is the reset having achieved very little.

The reasons people do this

The feed got stuck on one subject, usually after a period of watching a lot of it. The feed got contaminated by something you did not want, often from watching one thing out of curiosity. Or you are sharing a device and the feed has been trained by somebody else.

All three are the same problem in different clothes: an accumulation of signal that no longer matches what you want. That is exactly the problem the refresh is designed for.

The case it does not solve is a feed you find boring rather than wrong. If you refresh a feed that was accurately reflecting your habits, you will end up back where you were, because the input has not changed. That one needs different watching, not a different starting point.

The alternatives to a full reset

If the problem is narrow, use narrow tools first, because a reset throws away the parts of your feed you liked along with the parts you did not.

Not interested on individual videos targets a specific vein of content. Filtering keywords removes material by word, which is precise when the unwanted content shares vocabulary. Unfollowing accounts affects the Following feed, which is separate from For You and a common source of confusion — unfollowing someone does not remove them from your recommendations if you keep watching their videos.

And simply watching differently works better than people expect. The feed responds to recent behaviour, so a few deliberate sessions shift it without any setting being touched at all.

What a reset does not affect

Your own videos and how they are distributed. This is the important separation and it is worth stating clearly, because the word algorithm gets used for both sides.

The For You feed you consume and the distribution your posts receive are two different systems. Refreshing your recommendations changes what you are shown. It does not change how your uploads are served to other people, it does not reset any state attached to your content, and it is not a fix for a video that underperformed.

If what you actually want is to understand why a post did not travel, that is a different question with a different answer, and it lives in your own analytics rather than in your settings menu.

Questions people ask about resetting the TikTok feed

How do I reset my TikTok For You feed?

In Settings and privacy, under Content preferences, there is a refresh option that discards your recommendation history. TikTok describes the current scope on the confirmation screen, which is worth reading.

Does resetting the feed unfollow anyone?

No. Followers, following, your posts and your messages are untouched, and nobody is notified. Only the recommendation profile built from your watch history is discarded.

How long until the new feed settles?

It depends on how deliberately you use it afterwards. The sessions right after a refresh carry more weight than normal, so watching things through and skipping quickly are both stronger signals than usual.

Why does my For You feed keep repeating the same videos?

Accumulated watch signal on one subject. A refresh clears it, but narrower tools may serve you better: not interested on individual videos, or keyword filtering if the unwanted content shares vocabulary.

Does this change how my own videos perform?

No. The feed you consume and the distribution your posts receive are separate systems. Refreshing recommendations does not reset anything attached to your uploads.

Why can't I do this on Instagram or YouTube?

Their recommendations are entangled with follows, subscriptions and account history that also drive the rest of the product. TikTok's For You is built on watch behaviour and is cleanly detachable from the social graph.
