How to Clip on Twitch

The button looks forward and the recording looks back. That is the whole reason people miss the moment they were trying to catch.

Updated October 2026

While watching, press the clip button in the player controls, or use the keyboard shortcut alt and x on desktop. An editor opens with the last seconds of the stream already captured, where you trim the start and end and give the clip a title.

The capture is retrospective: it takes the seconds before you pressed, not after.

Clips stay available after the broadcast expires, which makes them the most durable record of a stream.

The part most guides skip

That backwards capture is the detail that decides whether you catch the moment, and almost nobody is told about it.

Twitch holds a rolling buffer of the stream. When you press clip, it hands you the end of that buffer, which is why the funny thing that just happened is already inside the editor. If you wait for the moment to finish and then press, you will often find the clip ends before the punchline.

So the habit that works is to press immediately and trim afterwards, rather than to wait for a clean ending.

The second thing people learn late is that clips are permanent in a way broadcasts are not. Past broadcasts expire on a retention clock. Clips do not go with them. A channel whose VODs have all expired can still have years of clips, which is why the clips tab is where you look for something you half-remember from a stream two years ago.

The third is ownership. The clip is attributed to the person who created it and sits on the channel it came from. The streamer can delete clips on their channel, and so can the creator of the clip — which is a shared control people only discover in an argument.

Making a clip

Hover the player and use the clip control, or press alt and x on desktop.

The editor opens with a window already captured. Drag the handles to trim, up to the maximum clip length.

Title it as if somebody will find it in search, because they might.

Publish, and the clip appears on the channel's clips tab with your name as its creator.

Clipping from a VOD

The same control works on a past broadcast, where the buffer is the whole video rather than a rolling window.

That makes VOD clipping precise: scrub to the moment and trim exactly.

It also means a VOD approaching expiry is worth clipping deliberately, because the clips survive it.

Highlights are the other tool, made by the streamer and longer than a clip.

Who can clip, and who can stop it

Clipping is on by default for a channel and can be disabled in the creator settings.

Some channels disable it for specific content, and some disable it entirely after an incident.

A clip can be deleted by its creator or by the channel owner and moderators.

Deleting a clip removes it everywhere it was embedded, which is the usual reason a link in a post stops working.

Downloading and reusing clips

Twitch does not offer a download button for viewers, though creators can download their own clips from the dashboard.

Clips are commonly reused on other platforms, and the ones that travel are the ones credited clearly to the channel.

Reuploading someone else's clip as your own content is a copyright matter rather than a Twitch setting.

For a streamer, clips that circulate elsewhere are the cheapest discovery available, which is an argument for leaving clipping on.

Why your clip failed

Clipping disabled on the channel is the most common reason the button is missing.

An ad playing at the moment you pressed can produce an empty or broken clip.

The stream dropping frames gives you a clip of the dropped section, since the clip captures what was broadcast.

And very long trims are refused, because clips have a maximum length that the editor enforces.

Questions people ask about Twitch clips

Does the clip record what happens after I press?

No. It captures the seconds before you pressed, from the stream's rolling buffer. Press immediately and trim afterwards.

Do clips disappear when the VOD expires?

No. Clips outlive past broadcasts, which is why old channels still have clips long after the recordings have gone.

Can I clip from a past broadcast?

Yes, and it is more precise than clipping live because you can scrub to the exact moment before trimming.

Who can delete a clip?

The person who created it, and the channel's owner or moderators. Deletion breaks every embed of that clip.

Why is the clip button missing?

The channel has clipping disabled, which is a setting streamers can switch off entirely.

Can I download a clip?

Creators can download their own clips from the dashboard. Twitch does not offer viewers a download control.
