How to Comment GIFs on Instagram
The GIF button sits inside the comment box, next to the emoji. When it isn't there, the cause is usually the app version, and sometimes the post you're commenting on.
How to comment GIFs on Instagram: open a post or Reel, tap the comment icon, then tap the GIF button in the comment bar, search for a GIF, tap the one you want and post it. Instagram added GIF comments on posts and Reels in May 2023, and the search runs on GIPHY's library.
If you don't see the GIF button, update the app first; Instagram's Help Center gives that as the first step for any comment problem. If it's still missing, the post may have comments limited or turned off, or you may be on a surface that doesn't offer it. Each case is below, along with how to copy a comment and what creators can control.
A GIF comment is an animated image posted in the comment thread instead of, or alongside, text. Instagram started rolling it out on May 16, 2023, after Mark Zuckerberg and Adam Mosseri announced it in a broadcast channel; TechCrunch's coverage the next day described it as support for GIFs in comments on both posts and Reels, powered by GIPHY's search. GIPHY was owned by Meta until 2023, when the UK competition regulator ordered the sale and Shutterstock bought it, but the search inside Instagram's comment box still draws on its library.
GIF comments work like any other comment. They count toward the post's comment total, they can be liked and replied to, and the creator can hide, delete or report them. They're also subject to the same filters: if a creator uses Hidden Words or limits who can comment, a GIF comment follows those rules.
For creators, the comment count is part of what a visitor reads before deciding whether a post is worth their time, and a thread of real replies makes a post look alive in a way likes alone don't. That count is what Instagram comments adds to, using comment lines you write yourself, from the post's public link. The rest of this guide is about the GIF button itself.
How do you comment a GIF on an Instagram post, step by step?
In the current Instagram app:
- Open the post or Reel and tap the comment icon, the speech bubble.
- In the comment bar at the bottom, tap the GIF button.
- Type a word in the search box to find a GIF, or scroll the trending ones.
- Tap a GIF to post it. Depending on your app version, it either posts straight away or appears in the comment box so you can add text first.
Replying to a comment with a GIF
Tap Reply under the comment, then use the GIF button in the same bar. The GIF appears in the reply thread under that comment, tagged to the person you replied to.
On a computer
GIF comments arrived as an app feature, and the GIF button may not appear when you comment on instagram.com. GIF comments other people posted still display in the browser.
Why can't I comment a GIF on Instagram?
Work through the causes from the most common:
- Outdated app. Instagram's Help Center says that if you can't add a comment, the first thing to try is updating to the latest version. The GIF button only exists in versions released after the 2023 rollout.
- Comments are limited or off. A creator can turn comments off on a post or limit who can comment. If you can't comment at all, the GIF button won't help.
- You're on the web. Comment from the app if the button is missing on instagram.com.
- The comment breaks a limit. The Help Center lists other reasons a comment fails: more than five @mentions in one comment, more than 30 hashtags, posting the same comment repeatedly, including the same emoji, or words Instagram filters under its Community Guidelines.
Can you comment GIFs on Reels?
Yes. Instagram's 2023 launch covered both feed posts and Reels, and the steps are the same: open the Reel's comments and tap the GIF button. GIF comments on Reels count toward the Reel's comment total like text comments do.
Stories are different. Replies to a Story go to the creator's messages, and Story comments, where a creator has them, follow their own rules. In direct messages, Instagram's Help Center describes a separate GIF and sticker picker, so sending a GIF privately is always an option even when a post doesn't take GIF comments.
Where does Instagram get its GIFs?
From GIPHY. TechCrunch's report on the 2023 launch says the feature uses GIPHY's search to find GIFs.
The ownership history explains why people ask. Meta bought GIPHY in 2020, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority ruled the deal anticompetitive and ordered Meta to sell it, and Shutterstock completed the purchase in June 2023. Instagram's GIF comments arrived in the middle of that, in May 2023, and kept using GIPHY's library after the sale.
If you make GIFs yourself, the comment picker searches GIPHY's library rather than your camera roll, so a GIF has to be findable there to be used in a comment.
Can you comment photos on Instagram?
Not as a documented feature. As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center describes comments in terms of text, replies, mentions and likes, and the GIF picker is the only image option the comment bar is known for. If you want to answer a post with your own photo, the routes are a direct message to the creator or a post of your own that tags them.
TikTok works differently here, and its photo comments come with their own rules; how to comment pictures on TikTok covers that version if you use both apps.
How do you copy a comment on Instagram?
Instagram's Help Center doesn't document a copy option for comments as of October 2026. The reliable method is the browser: open the post on instagram.com, where comment text is ordinary page text you can select and copy. A GIF comment can't be copied as text, since it's an image.
If you're trying to find a specific comment in a long thread rather than copy it, how to find an exact comment on an Instagram post has the methods that work, from expanding the thread in a browser to working from the commenter's name.
Can creators turn off GIF comments on Instagram?
Not separately, as far as Instagram documents. As of October 2026, its Help Center shows no switch that blocks GIFs while allowing text. What creators do control applies to all comments, GIFs included:
- Turn comments off on a single post, from the post's menu or before sharing it under Advanced settings.
- Limit who can comment, for example to followers or people you follow.
- Hide or delete individual comments, or manage several at once.
- Use Hidden Words to filter comments containing words or emoji you choose.
- Restrict or block accounts whose comments you don't want.
When your own comment disappears
If a GIF you posted vanishes from someone's post, it may have been hidden, deleted or filtered. Why can't I see comments on Instagram explains how to tell those apart.
Do GIF comments help a post?
They count as comments, so they add to the visible comment total and to the conversation under the post. A GIF reply is quick, which is why threads on funny Reels fill with them. Instagram doesn't publish that a GIF comment weighs differently from a text one.
For a creator, the comments that matter most are the ones that start a reply chain, and a GIF rarely does that on its own. Asking a question in the caption tends to bring more of both kinds.
Where a post is new and its comment section is empty, the first visitors have nothing to join. Buy Instagram comments is one way some accounts seed it: you give the post's public link, a number from 20 up and your own comment lines, paid from a balance funded with PayPal or crypto, and no login is ever requested. It changes what's in the thread, not how Instagram distributes the post. More guides for the network are on the Instagram page.
