Why Can't I See Comments on Instagram?
Instagram hides comments quietly and by default, and the person who wrote one usually still sees it. Four mechanisms do this, and each leaves a different trace on screen.
Why can't I see comments on Instagram? Usually because they're hidden, not deleted. Why are some comments hidden on Instagram?
One of four reasons, each with a different trigger:
- Instagram's comment filter, on by default: hides comments with common offensive words, phrases or emojis, and comments that look like spam.
- Hidden Words: the owner's custom list of words, phrases or emojis. Matching comments are hidden automatically on the owner's posts.
- Limits: temporarily hides comments and message requests from accounts that don't follow the owner, or that followed recently, for up to four weeks at a time and renewable.
- Restrict: the owner has restricted a specific account. That account's new comments are visible only to its author unless the owner approves them.
Why are comments hidden by Instagram itself?
Because the automatic filter judged them offensive or spammy. Instagram applies it to accounts by default, and the owner can switch it off in the privacy settings under Hidden Words. The filter can be wrong, especially with slang, jokes and words that are harmless in context, which is why hidden comments are kept rather than deleted and can be unhidden by the owner.
How to see hidden comments on Instagram
On any post where comments were filtered, scroll to the bottom of the comment section. If there are hidden comments, you'll see View hidden comments. Tap it to reveal them.
If it's your own post, you can do more: tap a hidden comment and choose to unhide it, which makes it public. To stop the same kind of comment from being hidden in future, adjust the filter or your Hidden Words list in Settings, under How others can interact with you, then Hidden Words. If the hiding came from Limits or Restrict, change those settings instead; comments hidden while Limits was on stay hidden after you switch it off unless you approve them.
Can people see hidden comments on Instagram?

If comments fail to load everywhere, not on one post, the cause is technical. Update the app, check your connection, and on Android clear the app's cache. A comment count that shows a number while the list is empty can also be a loading problem. If it persists on one post only, the owner has probably hidden or filtered the comments behind that number.
Hidden, deleted or restricted: how to tell the difference
From the writer's side, three situations look different if you know where to check:
- Hidden: you see your comment in place; a friend looking at the same post doesn't, unless they open View hidden comments.
- Deleted: your comment is gone for you too. The owner or Instagram removed it; Instagram may notify you when its own systems remove a comment for a guideline violation.
- Restricted or limited: you see your comment in place; the owner sees it in a pending state to approve or ignore; nobody else sees it.
How to check whether your comment is visible
Ask someone else to open the post, or view it from a second account that isn't yours, and look for your comment in the main thread. If it's only visible in the hidden section, the filter or Hidden Words caught it; rewording without the flagged term usually works. If it's not visible at all to others, you may be restricted or limited on that account, and there's nothing to fix from your side. If Instagram removed it, Instagram account status shows any violations recorded against your account.
What a hidden comment does to a post
Comments are one of the interactions counted in Instagram engagement rate, and they're one of the few things a visitor can read to judge whether a post landed. When filters hide part of the thread, the visible conversation shrinks, and a post with a healthy number of real comments can look quieter than it is.
For accounts that get a lot of spam, the filter is still worth keeping on; a thread full of bot replies reads worse than a short one. The better fix for a thin thread is more genuine replies, which is what questions in captions and replying to early comments encourage.
