How to Delete a Story on Facebook
Expiring and deleting are not the same thing, and only one of them leaves a copy you can find later.
Open your own story, tap the menu on the frame you want to remove, and choose to delete it. The frame disappears for everyone immediately, and a story with only one frame disappears with it.
Deleting is not the same as waiting. A story expires on its own after a day and can still sit in your archive afterwards; a deleted frame is gone from both places.
The viewer list goes with it. Once the frame is deleted, you cannot see who had already watched it.
Two mechanisms overlap here, and people only notice when one of them does something they did not expect.
The first is expiry. A story stops being shown to other people after a day. That is automatic, it is not deletion, and by default Facebook keeps a copy for you in the story archive, where it is private and permanent until you remove it.
The second is deletion. That takes the frame out of circulation now and out of the archive, and it takes the per-frame data with it: who viewed it, who reacted, who replied.
The gap between them is where the surprises live. People who assume everything vanishes after a day are surprised to find years of frames in their archive. People who delete a frame to stop it being seen are surprised that the viewer list went too, after they wanted to check who had already seen it.
So the order matters: look at the viewers first if you care about them, then delete. And if the archive is the part that bothers you, switch archiving off rather than deleting frames one at a time forever.
Deleting a single frame
Tap your story to open it, then pause on the frame you want gone.
The menu on that frame has delete. Confirm, and it is removed for everyone immediately, including people who were mid-story.
If the story has one frame, deleting it removes the story from your profile and from the story tray.
There is no undo. A deleted frame has to be posted again, and it starts with a fresh viewer count.
The archive, and how to switch it off
By default, expired stories are saved to a private archive that only you can see.
It is a feature rather than a leak: it is where you go to repost something or to find a clip you no longer have.
The setting to stop it is in the story settings, and turning it off applies to future stories rather than clearing what is already there.
To empty the archive, delete items from it. That is separate from deleting live frames and does not affect anything other people can see.
Deleting from a Page versus a profile
Page stories work the same way and are removed from the same place, as long as your access level allows posting.
On a Page, the story was published as the Page, so any admin with the right access can remove it, not only the person who posted it.
Meta Business Suite shows Page stories and can delete them from a computer, which is easier when a story was scheduled.
Page story metrics live in the Page's insights and survive longer than the frame does.
Hiding a story instead of deleting it
If the problem is one person rather than the story, the story audience controls let you hide stories from specific people without blocking them.
That applies to future stories, so it does not remove a frame that is already out.
The opposite control also exists: sharing a story with a custom list, which is the cleanest way to post something that is only for a few people.
Stories you are tagged in are not yours to delete. You can remove the tag, and the frame stays on their profile.
What other people keep
Screenshots are not prevented and not announced on Facebook stories, so a deleted frame can still exist on somebody's phone.
Replies to a story land in Messenger, and those messages survive the story. Deleting the frame does not delete the conversation.
Anyone who shared the story to their own feed, where that is allowed, has an independent copy.
The reasonable mental model is that deleting stops distribution and removes your record of it, rather than erasing it from the world.
Questions people ask about deleting stories
How do I delete one frame of my story?
Open the story, pause on the frame, open its menu and choose delete. It is removed for everyone immediately.
Does deleting a story remove the viewer list?
Yes. The list goes with the frame, so check who viewed it before deleting if that matters to you.
Where do expired stories go?
To your private story archive, if archiving is on. Only you see it, and items stay until you remove them.
Can I stop Facebook archiving my stories?
Yes, in the story settings. Switching it off applies to future stories and leaves existing archive items in place.
Can I delete a story someone shared?
No. You can remove your tag, but their copy belongs to their account.
Does the other person know I deleted it?
No notification is sent. The frame simply stops being available.
