How to Edit Reddit Post

The body is editable for life. The title is set in stone the second you press post, and that asymmetry decides how you should write.

Updated October 2026

Open your post, use the menu beneath it and choose edit. That works for text posts, on web and in the app, with no time limit.

Titles cannot be edited. Neither can the URL of a link post. If either is wrong, the only fix is to delete and post again.

Edited posts show an edited marker with a timestamp, and moderators of some communities can see the earlier version.

The part most guides skip

The title rule is the one worth building a habit around, because titles are what Reddit ranks and what people read.

A post's title is fixed at submission. There is no edit, no grace period and no moderator override that changes it. A typo in a title lives as long as the post does, and a title that misstates the content is a post that gets argued with rather than answered.

The body is the opposite: editable indefinitely, which is why long-running posts carry edit histories at the bottom. That is an accepted convention, and adding an update rather than silently rewriting is what keeps a comment thread readable.

The marker is not optional. Reddit stamps edited content, so quietly changing the meaning of a post after people have replied is visible to everyone and reads badly in a community that noticed.

For anything that must be right — an announcement, an AMA, a question with a deadline — the practical procedure is to write the title last, read it twice, and accept that the only correction available afterwards is deleting the post and starting over with the karma and comments lost.

Editing a text post

On the web, the menu under your post has an edit option that opens the body in the composer.

In the app, the same option sits behind the three-dot menu on your own post.

Save applies immediately, and the edited marker appears with the time of the change.

Formatting works the same as when posting, including the markdown and rich-text editors, which behave differently with pasted content.

What cannot be edited

Titles. Permanently fixed at submission.

The URL of a link post, including a typo in it.

The subreddit a post is in. Crossposting is the nearest thing to moving it, and it creates a new post.

The flair can usually be changed, by you or by moderators, depending on the community's settings.

Images and galleries are generally not editable after posting, though captions sometimes are.

Comments, and the delete-and-repost trade

Comments are editable on the same terms as post bodies, with the same marker.

Deleting a post removes it from the subreddit but leaves replies orphaned, and the comment karma stays with the people who wrote them.

Reposting resets the post's age, which matters because Reddit's ranking is heavily weighted toward the first hours.

In an active community, a repost within a short window can be removed as a duplicate, which is worth checking in the rules before deleting the original.

What moderators and others can see

The edited marker is public, with a timestamp.

Some moderation tooling retains earlier versions of a post or comment, so an edit is not a clean slate in a moderated community.

Third-party archives capture posts as they were, which is why edited posts are frequently quoted in their original form.

Deleting removes your name from a post in most views, but the content may already exist elsewhere.

Writing so you do not need the edit

Write the title last, after the body, when you know what the post actually says.

If the post asks for help, put the essential detail in the body and keep the title plain. Clever titles age badly in search.

For updates, append rather than rewrite, and label the update with a date.

And if the post is a link, check the URL before submitting, because that is the one field with no remedy at all.

Questions people ask about editing on Reddit

Can I edit a Reddit title?

No. Titles are fixed at submission. The only way to change one is to delete the post and submit it again.

Is there a time limit on editing a post?

No. The body of a text post can be edited at any point, and the edited marker shows when it happened.

Does editing hide the original version?

From ordinary readers, yes, but the edit is marked, moderation tooling may retain earlier versions, and archives often hold the original.

Can I change the subreddit a post is in?

No. Crossposting creates a new post elsewhere; it does not move the original.

Can I edit an image or a link?

No. Media and the URL of a link post are fixed. Only the text body and usually the flair can change.

Does deleting and reposting hurt?

It loses the karma and comments, resets the post's age, and in active communities can be removed as a duplicate.
