How to See Deleted Reddit Posts

The first useful step is working out which kind of gone it is, because the two have completely different remedies.

Updated October 2026

It depends on which kind of deletion it was. A post removed by moderators is still visible to its author in their own profile, and often through the direct link. A post deleted by its author is gone for everyone, including the author.

For either case, a web archive may hold a copy if someone archived the page before it went.

The third-party sites that used to mirror deleted Reddit content stopped working when Reddit restricted its data access, and the ones that remain are partial.

The part most guides skip

Separating removal from deletion is the whole trick, and the clues are visible if you know where to look.

A removed post shows a placeholder saying it was removed by moderators. The author can still see it in their own profile, usually with a note, and moderators see it in the moderation queue. The content exists; access to it is restricted.

A deleted post shows the author as deleted or the body as deleted. Reddit has detached it from the account and from public view. Nobody retrieves it from the platform, including support, and including the person who wrote it.

Comments add a wrinkle. A deleted account turns the author name into a placeholder while the comments stay, which is why threads are full of unattributed replies that still read fine.

And the tooling has changed. For years, third-party services archived Reddit continuously and could show deleted content on demand. When Reddit restricted free access to its data in 2023, most of those services lost their supply. What remains is general web archiving, which is opportunistic: it has a copy only if a human or a crawler happened to save that page.

Telling removal from deletion

Removed by moderators usually shows an explicit placeholder saying so, sometimes with a reason.

Deleted by the author shows the content or the username replaced with a deleted marker.

If you are the author, check your own profile: removed posts are often still listed there, deleted ones are not.

Moderators of the community can see removed content in their queue, which is why asking in modmail is the fastest route for your own removed post.

What a web archive can do

General archives store pages that somebody requested or that a crawler reached.

Popular threads are archived far more often than ordinary ones, so the odds depend entirely on how much attention the post had.

Search the post URL in the archive rather than the title; archives index by address.

A cached copy from a search engine occasionally holds a recently deleted post, but caches turn over quickly.

Why the old tools stopped working

Several services mirrored Reddit continuously and could show removed or deleted content for any thread.

In 2023 Reddit restricted free access to the data those tools relied on, and most of them shut down or became read-only for historical data.

Some browser extensions that claim to restore deleted comments now rely on those frozen archives, so they work for old content and not for new.

Anything promising full recovery of recent deletions is overselling what it can reach.

Recovering your own content

If it was removed, message the moderators of that subreddit. They can see it and can restore it.

If you deleted it, Reddit's data export may contain it if the request covers the period before deletion.

Otherwise it is gone. Support does not restore deleted posts for authors.

For anything you may need later, keep a copy outside Reddit before posting. This is unglamorous and it is the only reliable method.

The privacy side of the same question

Deleting your own posts is a legitimate way to reduce your footprint, and it works going forward.

It does not reach archives, screenshots or quotes in other threads.

Mass-deletion tools exist and have been used by many people; they also look like account compromise and can draw attention.

Deleting an account turns authorship into a placeholder but leaves the comments standing, which surprises people who expected the thread to empty.

Questions people ask about deleted content

Can I see a post that was removed by moderators?

Often yes, if you are its author, from your own profile or the direct link. Moderators can see it in their queue and can restore it.

Can anyone recover a post the author deleted?

Not through Reddit. Only an external archive copy made before deletion can show it, and that depends on luck.

Why do the old deleted-comment tools no longer work?

Reddit restricted free access to its data in 2023, which cut off the supply those mirrors depended on.

Does deleting my account delete my comments?

No. The comments stay with a placeholder in place of your username. Deleting them is a separate action, before closing the account.

How do I know which kind of deletion happened?

The placeholder text differs: removed by moderators is stated explicitly, while an author deletion shows a deleted marker on the content or the name.

Can moderators see what I deleted?

Moderation tooling retains some content and timing data, so deletion is not a clean erase inside a moderated community.
