How to Hide Followers on Instagram (and Your Following List)
Instagram never shipped a toggle for the follower list. It shipped one switch with side effects, and two controls people keep mistaking for it.
There is no setting that hides only your followers. If you are looking for how to hide followers on Instagram, the honest answer is that the app gives you one real control and two things people mistake for it. The real control is switching the account to private, which takes the follower list and the following list off public view at the same time, and takes your posts, reels and stories with them. It is all or nothing.
The two impostors are Restrict, which changes nothing about either list, and Remove follower, which hides nothing either. Remove only shortens the list by ejecting one account at a time, quietly, with no notification and no block. And none of the three hides the number. Even on a private account, the follower count in your profile header stays readable to anyone who opens the page.
Your follower list is public profile data by default, and it is tappable: anyone who lands on your profile opens the count, scrolls the names one by one, and opens any of those names from there. Instagram has never shipped a switch for it. What makes that a decision rather than an oversight is the contrast inside the same app, because likes did get one. There is a setting that hides like and view counts across your feed, and you can hide the count on an individual post as well. How to hide your following list on Instagram

Can you hide one account you follow?
No. There is no per-account hiding on either list, and nothing in the app marks a single follow as private. The options are blunt: unfollow, or live with it being visible.
If you unfollow to clean the list but still want the posts, you have to reach the account another way, by saving it or opening the profile directly. Muting is not that tool. Mute changes what shows up in your feed and leaves the follow itself in place, fully visible to anyone reading your list.
Does anyone find out when you unfollow them?
Instagram sends nothing. No notification, no badge, no entry in their activity feed. The change is still discoverable by anyone who goes looking, since their follower count drops by one and your profile reads Follow instead of Following.
