How to Make Your Instagram Private, Step by Step
The switch takes seconds. What trips people up is the account type: a creator or business profile has no private option until it goes back to personal.
How to make a private Instagram: open your profile, tap the menu icon, choose Account privacy, and switch on Private account, then confirm. From that moment only followers you approve can see your posts, Reels and stories. If the switch is missing, you're on a creator or business account, which has to go back to personal first.
That second part is the reason most people end up searching for this. Instagram's professional accounts can't be private at all, so the setting simply isn't there until the account type changes. Everything else about going private is quick, reversible and doesn't remove anyone who already follows you.
A private Instagram account is one where your content is visible only to followers you've approved. Anyone else who opens the profile sees your name, username, photo, bio and the three counts, plus a note that the account is private and a button to request to follow.
Instagram has made private the default for a large group of users. Since Meta announced Teen Accounts on September 17, 2024, accounts of teens under 16 are set to private automatically, as are teens under 18 when they sign up, and under-16s need a parent's permission to loosen those protections.
For everyone else the choice is yours, and it's worth knowing what flips with it. Going private affects discovery, reposts and anything that depends on strangers reaching your profile, including services that work on the public follower count. Instagram followers, for example, need a public profile to deliver to: a private account can't receive them, and switching to private while an order runs pauses it until the profile is public again.
How do you set an Instagram account to private on the app?
In current versions of the Instagram app, as of October 2026:
1. Tap your profile picture at the bottom right to open your profile.
2. Tap the menu icon, the three lines at the top right.
3. Under the section about who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
4. Switch on Private account, then tap Switch to private to confirm.
On a computer, open Instagram in a browser, click More at the bottom left, choose Settings, then Account privacy, and tick Private account.
Labels move between app versions. If you can't find the option, use the search bar at the top of Settings and type private. The steps are the same on iPhone and Android.
Can you make a business or creator account private on Instagram?
No. Professional accounts, both creator and business, are public by design, so the Private account switch doesn't appear on them. To go private you first switch back to a personal account. Instagram's help center gives the path: open your profile, tap the menu, tap Account type and tools, then Switch to personal account, and confirm.
Know what you give up before you do it. A personal account loses professional insights, the contact buttons and the category label on the profile, and access to Meta business tools tied to the professional account, such as ads managed through it. If you rely on reading reach and audience data, export or note what you need first.
The switch works in both directions. You can return to a professional account later, but it will be public again from that point, because the two settings can't coexist.
Do your existing followers stay when you go private?
Yes. Making the account private doesn't remove anyone or notify anyone. Every current follower keeps full access to your posts, stories and Reels, exactly as before.
That surprises people who go private to shut someone out. If that person already follows you, the switch changes nothing for them. You'd need to remove them as a follower, or block them, to cut off their access. How to hide followers on Instagram walks through removing a follower without blocking, and how to hide who you follow covers what the lists show once you're private.
New people are different. From the moment you switch, anyone who wants to see your content has to send a follow request and wait for you to approve it.
Can a private Instagram account still appear in search?
Yes. A private account can still be found by name or username in Instagram search, and its profile header stays visible: profile photo, name, bio, link and the counts of posts, followers and following. What's hidden is everything below the header.
What stops appearing is your content in places strangers browse. Your posts and Reels no longer reach people who don't follow you through Explore, hashtag and location pages, or recommendations. The Repost button only appears on public content, so nobody can repost your posts to their followers either. What reposting does on Instagram explains why that button matters for reach.
If you want to vanish from search entirely, private isn't the tool. Temporarily deactivating the account hides the whole profile until you log back in.
Can private accounts post Reels that reach non-followers?
No. On a private account, Reels follow the same rule as every other post: only approved followers can watch them. They aren't recommended in the Reels feed to people outside that circle, and others can't remix or reuse them.
This is the single biggest practical difference for anyone posting video. Reels are the format Instagram most often shows to people who don't follow an account, and a private profile opts out of that by definition.
Some people handle it with two accounts: a private personal one for friends and a public one for what they want strangers to find. Instagram lets you add more than one account to the app and switch between them from the profile, which is easier than flipping one account back and forth.
How do you approve follow requests on a private account?
Requests collect in your notifications. Tap the heart icon at the top of the home feed and you'll see Follow requests at the top of the list when any are waiting. Tap it to see each person, then tap Confirm to let them in or Delete to decline. A declined person isn't told; the request just disappears.
A few habits make a private account easier to run. Check the requests list regularly, since nothing reminds you. Look at the profile before approving, because approval gives full access to everything you've posted. And approving someone doesn't make you follow them back: tap Follow on their profile if you want to see their posts too.
To make the account public again, return to Account privacy and switch Private account off. Look at any pending requests before you do, so nobody you meant to decline slips in. Going public also restores everything that depends on a public profile, including Explore, reposts and paid delivery. If the reason for switching back is to grow the account, buy Instagram followers works only on a public profile and changes the follower count visitors read. Every Instagram guide and service is listed on the Instagram page.
