How Does Quora Work?
Your answer lives on a page you do not control, competing with every other answer on it. That is the whole system.
Quora is organised around questions, not authors. You do not have a page of your own that accumulates traffic; you write an answer that lives on a question page, alongside every other answer to the same question, ordered mostly by upvotes. The question page is what ranks in Google and collects the search traffic, and your answer gets a share of it depending on where it sits. That is why the top answer gets read and the fifth one does not, and why a better answer posted later can stay invisible for years.
Everywhere else you write, the page is yours. A blog post, a Medium story, a LinkedIn article: one page, one author, and whatever traffic it earns is yours entirely.
Quora inverts that. The durable object is the question, and the question's page is what Google indexes and ranks - often very well, because Quora pages match the way people actually type queries. Your answer is one block on that page.
That changes what success looks like. You are not building an audience for a page you own; you are competing for position on somebody else's page, which already has the traffic. Winning means being the answer at the top. Losing means being correct in a place nobody scrolls to.
It also explains the platform's most-complained-about feature. People ask why a thoughtful, accurate answer gets a hundred views while a confident, wrong one above it gets fifty thousand. The answer is that the ordering is not a judgement about accuracy - it is upvotes, weighted, and the wrong answer got there first and accumulated them.
How answers are ordered
Quora has never published its exact ranking, and anyone who tells you precisely how it works is guessing confidently.
What the company has said, repeatedly and publicly, is that upvotes are central and that they are weighted - an upvote from somebody with credibility in the topic counts for more than one from an account with none. The system is explicitly not a raw count.
Beyond that, the signals people observe are the ones you would expect: how long readers stay on an answer, whether they expand it, how recently it was written, and the author's history in the topic. None of that is confirmed in detail.
The practical version is simple enough. Upvotes move you up. Upvotes from people who actually answer questions in your field move you up more. And position is what decides whether anybody reads you at all.
The credential line, which does more work than people expect
Under every answer Quora shows a credential - a line you write yourself about why you are qualified to answer this particular question.
It is per-topic, which is the part people miss. You can have one credential for questions about software and another for questions about cycling, and the right one shows on the right answer.
It matters because it is the only thing a reader sees about you before deciding whether to keep reading, and because it appears above the fold while your profile is a click away. A specific, checkable credential - the actual job, the actual years - outperforms a grand vague one, because the audience here is unusually willing to be skeptical.
Where the traffic comes from
Mostly Google, not from Quora itself. People search a question in natural language, Quora's page for that question ranks, and they land on it.
That has two consequences. Your answer gets read by people who have never heard of you and never will - they came for the question. And an answer to a question nobody searches for is read by almost nobody regardless of quality, which makes question selection more important than answer quality for raw reach.
The feed inside Quora exists and sends some traffic, but for most answers the search path dominates. That is why answers to evergreen questions keep accumulating views for years, and answers to news-adjacent questions die within a week.
What this means if you are writing there for a reason
Pick questions that already have search traffic and weak top answers. That combination is the whole opportunity, and it is checkable before you write a word: open the question, look at the top answer, and decide whether you can beat it.
Write the answer so the first two sentences are complete. Quora truncates long answers behind a More link, and the decision to expand happens on what is visible.
And be honest with yourself about the position problem. If your answer sits fifth on a question with good traffic, the issue is not the writing - it is that four answers have more upvotes than yours. That is a different problem with a different solution, and pretending it is a writing problem is how people spend months on Quora with nothing to show.
The things Quora is not good for
Building an audience you own. The followers you gain follow you on a platform that decides what they see, and the traffic belongs to questions rather than to you.
Linking. Quora's links are nofollow, so answers are not an SEO backlink strategy whatever anyone selling that service says.
Anything time-sensitive. The traffic pattern rewards evergreen questions, and an answer about this week dies with the week.
What it is good for is narrow and real: being the visible expert answer on a question your customers are typing into Google, on a page that already ranks and that you did not have to build.
Questions people ask about how Quora works
Do Quora upvotes decide the order of answers?
They are central to it, and Quora has said publicly that they are weighted rather than counted - an upvote from somebody credible in the topic counts for more.
Other signals are involved and the exact formula has never been published.
Does Quora pass SEO value to links?
No. Links in Quora answers are nofollow, so they do not pass ranking signal.
They can still send real people, which is a different and more useful reason to include one.
Why does my good answer have no views?
Usually position, not quality. If you are below three other answers on the question, most readers never reach you.
The other common cause is the question itself having no search traffic, which is worth checking before writing rather than after.
What is a Quora credential?
A short line about why you can answer this question, shown under your name on the answer.
It is set per topic, so you can have different credentials for different subjects, and it is the only thing about you most readers will ever see.

- add upvotes to an answer — Since position is decided by upvotes and position decides whether anyone reads you, you can add upvotes to an answer - with the caveat that Quora weights upvotes by who gives them, so bought ones move the ranking less per unit than earned ones.
