How Long Do Instagram Stories Last?
One Story, three clocks: the 24 hours it is live, the 48 hours you can see who watched, and the archive that keeps it after both have run out.
How long do Instagram Stories last? A Story stays visible to your audience for 24 hours from the moment you post it, then disappears from the Stories row and from your profile ring. The list of who viewed it lasts longer, 48 hours from posting, and the Story itself is kept in your private Archive unless you turned that off.
Each video clip in a Story can run up to 60 seconds, according to Instagram's help center as of October 2026. A longer video is split into consecutive clips rather than rejected. And a Story you add to a Highlight stays on your profile until you remove it, long after the 24 hours are over.
An Instagram Story is a photo or video that is shown in the row at the top of your followers' Feed and on your profile ring for 24 hours, and then stops being shown. That much everyone knows. What trips people up is that the same Story runs on three separate clocks, and each one controls something different.
The first clock is the 24-hour window. It decides who can watch: during it, anyone allowed to see your Stories can tap your ring; after it, nobody can, unless you put the Story in a Highlight.
The second clock is 48 hours. Instagram's help center says you can see who has seen your Story up to 48 hours after you post it. So for a full day after the Story has disappeared for everyone else, you can still open it from your Archive and read the names.
The third clock does not run out. Stories are saved to your Archive automatically, a setting that is on by default, and they stay there, visible only to you, until you delete them.
The practical consequence is about numbers. A Story's view count only grows while the Story is in the row, which means the 24-hour clock is also the ceiling on the metric. Nothing after that adds to the named list. If you want the count to reflect a launch or an announcement, the first hours are the whole game, and that is where Instagram Story views are placed: inside the window, where the number still moves.
How long does an Instagram story stay up?
Twenty-four hours, counted from the moment each clip is posted, not from midnight and not from the first clip in the sequence. If you post three clips across an afternoon, each one leaves on its own schedule, and the ring stays lit until the last one expires.
The rule is the same for Stories shared to Close Friends. The green ring changes who sees it, not how long it lasts.
There is no setting to keep a Story live for longer. The two ways to keep it visible after 24 hours are a Highlight, which pins it to your profile, or reposting it as a feed post or Reel, which makes it a different kind of content with different rules.
You can end it early. Deleting a Story before the 24 hours run out removes it for everyone, and Instagram's help center notes that a Story deleted this way is not saved to your Archive.
How long can an Instagram story be?
Each video clip can be up to 60 seconds. Instagram's help center states that a video of 60 seconds or less shared to Stories appears as one clip. A longer video is split into several clips that play back to back, and on iOS you can adjust the split with the trimmer before sharing.
There is no fixed length for a photo. A still image is shown for a few seconds before the next clip advances, and the viewer can hold the screen to pause it.
What Instagram does not offer is a single Story clip longer than a minute. If the video needs to run for several minutes as one piece, the format you want is a Reel, which has its own ceiling and its own rules, covered in how long a Reel can be on Instagram.
One caution about splitting: viewers drop off between clips. A three-minute video split into three Story clips is watched by fewer people at the end than at the start, and the drop is visible in your view count clip by clip.
Can you see who viewed your story after 24 hours?
Yes, for one more day. The 48-hour window means the names stay available after the Story itself is gone for your audience. To read them, open your Archive from the profile menu, choose the Stories archive, tap the Story, and swipe up.
After 48 hours from posting, the named list is no longer shown, even if the Story is in a Highlight. Instagram does not offer a way to recover it, and no outside app can, because the list is only exposed inside your own account.
The list has more to it than its lifespan: what its order means, whether someone can watch without appearing, and how replays are counted. That is covered in who viewed your Instagram Story, and the order of the names in particular in what the order of Story viewers means.
Where do Instagram stories go after 24 hours?
To your Stories Archive, if it is on, which it is by default. Instagram's help center describes the archive as private: only you can see Stories saved there after they disappear from your Story.
- To find it: go to your profile, tap the three-line menu, and open Archive. Switch to the Stories archive at the top if it opens on posts.
- To turn it off: the toggle Save story to archive is in your Story settings. With it off, Stories shared from then on are deleted after 24 hours.
- To bring one back: from the archive you can share an old Story again, which starts a new 24-hour clock and a new viewer list.
- To keep one public: add it to a Highlight, from the archive or while it is still live.
Does the archive keep Stories forever?
Instagram does not set an expiry on the archive. Stories stay until you delete them or delete the account. They are also included in the data download Instagram offers from Accounts Center, which is the safer copy if a Story matters to you.
Do story views keep counting from a highlight?
Not in a way you can read by name. A Highlight makes the Story watchable on your profile with no time limit, but the named viewer list still closes at 48 hours from the original posting. Someone who taps the Highlight a week later is not added to any list you can open.
Instagram does not publish whether later Highlight plays feed a total anywhere. Professional accounts have Story insights, which keep aggregate figures such as reach and replies for each Story after the named list is gone, and those are the numbers to use for reporting.
The timing has a practical edge. If you add a Story to a Highlight 20 hours after posting, you still have only 28 hours of names left, because the 48 hours run from when the Story was first posted, not from when it joined the Highlight.
So a Highlight is a shelf, not a second launch. It is how a Story keeps working as a profile asset, the way a pinned post does, rather than how it collects more views.
When does a Story collect most of its views?
Early. A Story reaches the people who already follow you and open Instagram while it is in the row, and the row is ordered separately for every viewer. Followers who open the app in the first hours meet it near the front; followers who open the app late in the day may never scroll to it.
That is also why Stories behave so differently from Reels. A Reel can keep finding new people for days through the Reels tab. A Story has no discovery surface and a fixed lifespan, so its count is drawn from your follower list within one day, and nothing after the 24 hours adds to it. Why that ceiling sometimes falls, and what moves it, is covered in why your Instagram Story isn't getting views.
Two things follow from the clock. Post when your followers are active, which Insights shows for professional accounts. And put the clip that matters first, because the drop-off between clips is real.
The ceiling itself is set by the size of the audience that actually opens the app, which is a follower question rather than a Story question; Instagram followers is where that number lives, and every Instagram service is listed on the Instagram page. If the Story is announcing something and the count is what people will screenshot, Story views need to land inside the 24 hours to count at all.
