How to Add Highlights on Instagram, From a Story or the Archive
A highlight is a Story that refuses to expire. Every one starts as a Story, which is why the Archive matters more than the plus button.
How to add highlights on Instagram: go to your profile, tap the New circle (the plus) under your bio, pick one or more Stories from your Archive, tap Next, choose a name and cover, and tap Add or Done. To highlight a Story that's still live, open it and tap Highlight at the bottom of the screen.
Either way, the Stories you add stay on your profile as a highlight until you remove them, long after the original 24 hours. Instagram's Help Center describes exactly that flow, and it explains the one dependency most people miss: highlights are built from the Stories Archive, so the Archive has to have kept your Stories.
Story Highlights are the round covers under an Instagram bio, each one a saved collection of Stories that anyone who can see your profile can tap through. A Story on its own disappears from view after 24 hours; putting it in a highlight keeps it on the profile until you take it out.
The mechanics are simple, but they explain most of the problems people run into. A highlight doesn't hold photos or videos directly. It holds Stories, and the source for any Story older than a day is your Stories Archive. Instagram saves Stories there by default, and its guide to Stories on about.instagram.com lists the two ways in: from an active Story, or from the Archive in your profile menu. If the Archive was turned off when you posted, an expired Story is gone and can't be highlighted.
Because a highlight is just Stories, its views are Story views. That's also the number a visitor reads first when they open one, and accounts building a profile around highlights sometimes add Instagram Story views to the Stories behind them. The steps come first.
How do you make a highlight on Instagram?
There are two starting points, and both end in the same place.
- From your profile: tap the New circle with the plus under your bio, select the Stories you want from your Archive, tap Next, type a name, choose a cover, then tap Add on iPhone or Done on Android.
- From a live Story: open your own Story while it's still up, tap Highlight at the bottom, then pick an existing highlight or create a new one and name it.
- To add to a highlight you already have: open the highlight, tap More, choose Edit highlight, and select more Stories from the list.
How do you save a highlight on Instagram so it lasts?
You already have: a highlight stays on your profile until you delete it or remove its Stories. What can go wrong is the source. Check that saving Stories to the Archive is switched on in your Story settings, so every future Story is available to highlight later. Instagram's Help Center has a separate page on archiving Stories and turning the Archive off.
Can you add a highlight without posting a story?
You can without posting a new one, as long as the content was a Story at some point. The New circle on your profile opens your Archive, so any Story you've posted since the Archive was on can go straight into a highlight with nothing new published. If you'd rather have an old Story back in the ring for a day, how to unarchive a story on Instagram covers sharing it again.
What you can't do is put a photo or video from your camera roll directly into a highlight. It has to go through Stories first. That's the reason for the workaround people share: post the image as a Story to a small audience, then highlight it. Instagram marks Close Friends Stories with a green ring, and guides report that a Close Friends Story placed in a highlight keeps that limited audience rather than becoming visible to everyone, so it isn't a way to publish to all your followers quietly. Test it from a second account before relying on it.
For most people the clean route is the Archive. Post the Story normally, let it run its 24 hours, and build the highlight from the Archive when you're ready.
How many highlights can you have on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't publish a limit on the number of highlights a profile can have, and its help pages don't mention one. The practical limit is the visitor: the row scrolls sideways, and people rarely swipe past the first few covers.
That makes order more important than count. The covers people see without scrolling should be the ones that explain the account, such as what you sell, what you post or where to start. If the row has grown long, merging thin highlights into fewer, clearer ones usually helps more than adding another.
How do you change a highlight cover?
Press and hold the highlight on your profile, tap Edit highlight, then tap Edit cover. You can pick a frame from one of the Stories in that highlight or choose an image from your camera roll, then crop it into the circle and tap Done.
A custom cover is the easiest way to make the row look deliberate. Instagram's own Stories guide recommends a clear name and a custom cover so highlights are easy to browse at a glance. A matching set is simple to make: post a plain Story after you change the background color on an Instagram story, add an icon or a word, and use that frame as the cover. Keep the name short; long names are cut off under the circle.
Do highlight views show who watched?
For a while. A highlight is made of Stories, and the named list of who watched each Story closes 48 hours after that Story was first posted, whether or not it's in a highlight. Adding it to a highlight later doesn't restart the clock. After that, you keep the totals but lose the names. How long Instagram Stories last walks through each of those clocks.
To see who's in the list while it's open, open the highlight and swipe up on the Story, as you would on any Story. Why the names appear in the order they do is covered in who viewed your Instagram Story.
How do you delete a highlight?
To delete the whole highlight, press and hold it on your profile and tap Delete highlight, then confirm. The Stories inside it aren't deleted from your Archive; only the collection on your profile goes.
To remove a single Story from a highlight, open the highlight, go to that Story, tap More and choose Remove from highlight. If it was the only Story in it, the highlight disappears with it.
Nothing about deleting is announced to your followers. The cover simply stops appearing under your bio.
Which Stories are worth turning into highlights?
The ones a new visitor needs and wouldn't find in your grid: answers to the questions people keep asking, how to order or book, reviews, behind the scenes, and a short intro to who runs the account. A highlight is a permanent spot on your profile, so it should do a job that a single post can't.
A Story with a link sticker is a natural candidate for a shop or booking highlight; how to add a link to an Instagram Story covers the sticker. If your Stories aren't being seen in the first place, fix that first with why your Instagram Story has no views. Some accounts also add Instagram Story views so a key Story doesn't sit at a near-empty count; that changes the number shown on the Story, not who Instagram shows it to. Every Instagram service is on the Instagram page.
Instagram highlight questions, answered briefly
How do I add highlights on Instagram?
Tap the New circle under your bio, choose Stories from your Archive, tap Next, add a name and cover, then tap Add or Done. To use a live Story, open it and tap Highlight.
Can I make an Instagram highlight without posting a new story?
Yes, from your Archive, using Stories you posted before. A photo or video that was never a Story can't go into a highlight directly; it has to be posted as a Story first.
Why can't I add an old story to a highlight?
The Archive was probably off when you posted it, so Instagram didn't keep the Story after 24 hours. Switch on saving Stories to the Archive so future Stories are available.
Is there a limit to how many highlights you can have on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't publish one. The row scrolls sideways, so the real constraint is that visitors mostly look at the first few covers.
Can you see who viewed your Instagram highlight?
Only within 48 hours of when each Story was first posted. After that the names disappear and only the totals remain, even though the highlight stays up.
Does deleting a highlight delete the stories in it?
No. Deleting a highlight removes it from your profile, but the Stories remain in your Archive and can be used again.
