How Many Videos Are on YouTube?
YouTube doesn't run a public counter. It gives a number on anniversaries, researchers estimate the rest, and the two answers measure different things.
How many videos are on YouTube? YouTube doesn't publish a live count, but on its 20th anniversary in April 2025 it said more than 20 billion videos had been uploaded since 2005. Independent researchers at UMass Amherst, sampling YouTube at random, estimated about 10 to 14 billion publicly visible videos, the ones anyone can find and watch.
Both numbers are right because they count different things. The 20 billion counts every upload ever made, including videos later deleted, set to private or left unlisted. The research estimate counts only what is public at the moment of sampling. Any single figure you see without a date and a source is a guess dressed up as a statistic.
The total number of videos on YouTube is a figure YouTube discloses only occasionally, which is why search results disagree by billions. The most recent official figure came on April 23, 2025, when YouTube marked its 20th birthday on its official blog and in press coverage: more than 20 billion videos uploaded to date, and an average of more than 20 million new videos uploaded every day as of March 2025.
The other credible source is academic. A team at the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Initiative for Digital Public Infrastructure, led by Ethan Zuckerman, built a random sample of YouTube by generating video addresses at random and checking which ones existed. Their paper, "Dialing for Videos," published in the Journal of Quantitative Description: Digital Media in December 2023, put the number of publicly visible videos at roughly 10 to 14 billion, probably more than 13 billion. Press reports of the team's continued counting put it at about 14.8 billion by mid-2024.
The sample also showed what an average YouTube video looks like, and it isn't what you see on the home page: 4.9% had no views at all, 72.6% had no comments and 88.7% had no likes. The videos the algorithm surfaces are the exception. That gap between the billions of uploads and the few that get watched is also where a visible view count matters, and where YouTube views change the number a new viewer reads before pressing play.
How many videos are uploaded to YouTube every minute?
Two official figures exist, and they measure different units.
The older one is hours. YouTube has said since 2019 that more than 500 hours of video are uploaded every minute, a figure it first raised from 400 hours, and that press and data firms still repeat.
The newer one is videos. YouTube's 20th-anniversary figure of more than 20 million uploads per day works out to roughly 13,900 videos per minute, or about 230 every second. That count includes Shorts, which are short by definition, which is why the number of videos has grown faster than the hours.
Neither figure is a live counter. Sites that show a ticking "videos uploaded today" number are multiplying an old average by the clock.
Does YouTube publish an official video count?
Not continuously. YouTube discloses scale figures at milestones, such as anniversaries, events for advertisers and creator announcements, and otherwise leaves the total unpublished.
That's the reason for the spread in what you read. A page quoting 800 million videos is usually repeating a third-party estimate from years ago. A page quoting 20 billion is using YouTube's April 2025 upload total. A page quoting 14 billion is using the UMass research, which counts only public videos.
When you need a number for something that matters, cite it with its date and its source, and say which thing it counts: uploads ever made or videos public now.
How many YouTube channels are there?
YouTube doesn't publish a total number of channels, and every figure in circulation is an estimate. Part of the difficulty is definitional: every Google account can have a YouTube channel, and most of those channels have never uploaded anything.
What YouTube does publish is the size of the group that earns from it. As of 2026, YouTube's official blog says there are more than 3 million creators in the YouTube Partner Program. That's a meaningful floor for channels large enough to meet the program's requirements, which YouTube monetization requirements explains.
For the very top of the distribution, the most subscribed YouTube channels lists the leaders and how those rankings are compiled.
How many hours of video are watched daily?
The most widely cited official figure is more than 1 billion hours a day, which YouTube announced in February 2017. YouTube hasn't published a newer daily watch-time total since then in the same form, so figures you see above that are third-party estimates.
Watch time is the metric YouTube's own systems lean on most, more than raw views, because it shows whether people stayed. It's also the basis of the Partner Program's long-form requirement. What counts as a YouTube view explains how views are counted, and how that differs from the hours a video earns.
How many videos does the average channel have?
There's no official average, and an average would mislead anyway. Upload counts on YouTube are extremely skewed: a small number of channels, such as news outlets and music labels, upload tens of thousands of videos, while most channels have a handful or none.
The UMass sample points the same way on views. Most videos in it had very few views, and a tiny number of videos accounted for most of the viewing. The median channel is small and quiet; the channels you know are far out in the tail.
For your own channel, the useful comparison isn't the platform average but your own recent videos. A channel that compares each new upload with its last ten learns more than one that compares itself with YouTube as a whole.
How do you see how many videos a channel has?
On the channel's page. As of October 2026, the header under the channel name shows the handle, the subscriber count, unless the owner hid it, and the number of videos. For more detail, tap the channel description to open the About panel, which also lists total views and the date the channel joined YouTube.
The count reflects what visitors can see, so a creator's own content list in YouTube Studio, which also includes private and unlisted uploads, can be longer.
If the subscriber count is missing from the header, the owner chose to hide it, which how to hide your YouTube subscriber count walks through.
What do billions of videos mean for a new upload?
They mean competition for attention is the default state. With more than 20 million new videos a day, a new upload starts among millions of others, and the research sample shows most videos never get much past that start.
What moves a video out of that pile is mostly in the creator's hands: a title and thumbnail that make a promise, an opening that keeps it, and a topic people search for. How to get more YouTube views covers those levers.
The view count is the one public signal a viewer reads before deciding to press play. YouTube views add to that number using only the public video link, never your account login. They don't make YouTube recommend the video or create watch time that counts toward a program. Every YouTube service is on the YouTube page.
Questions people ask about the size of YouTube
How many videos are on YouTube in total?
YouTube said in April 2025 that more than 20 billion videos had been uploaded since 2005. Researchers at UMass Amherst estimated about 10 to 14 billion videos are publicly visible, since many uploads are later deleted or made private.
How many videos are uploaded to YouTube per day?
More than 20 million on average, according to the figure YouTube published for its 20th anniversary, based on March 2025. That is roughly 13,900 videos a minute.
Is the 500 hours per minute figure still accurate?
It's the hours figure YouTube has cited since 2019. It measures hours of video, not number of videos, and YouTube now also reports uploads as videos per day.
How many YouTube videos have zero views?
In the UMass Amherst random sample published in December 2023, 4.9% of public videos had no views at all, 72.6% had no comments and 88.7% had no likes.
How many YouTube channels are there?
YouTube doesn't publish a total. It does say more than 3 million creators are in the YouTube Partner Program, as of 2026. Totals beyond that are third-party estimates.
Where can I see how many videos a YouTube channel has?
In the channel header under the name, next to the subscriber count, and in the About panel, which also shows total views and the join date.
