Why Am I Not Getting Instagram Notifications?

A notification has to get past three separate switches before it reaches your screen. The one that's off is usually the one you forgot you ever touched.

Updated October 2026

Why am I not getting Instagram notifications? Usually because one of three switches is off: Instagram's own settings, including a pause or sleep mode, your phone's permission for Instagram to notify you, or a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode that silences it. Check them in that order and one of them is almost always the cause.

If all three are on and notifications still don't arrive, the problem is usually the app itself, fixed by updating it, logging out and back in, or reinstalling. None of this affects what other people see on your account. The notifications most people check for are new followers, likes and comments, and the follower number is the public count Instagram followers add to.

The part most guides skip

The setting that catches people out is inside Instagram, not the phone. As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center describes two ways the app can silence itself: pausing push notifications, and sleep mode, which it says automatically pauses notifications on your account.

Both are easy to switch on and forget. A pause set one evening to get some quiet looks like a broken app the next morning. Sleep mode runs on a schedule, so notifications arrive normally during the day and vanish at night, which looks like a random fault rather than a setting.

That's why the first place to look isn't your phone's settings, where everything may look fine. Open Instagram, go to your profile, tap the menu, then Settings, then Notifications, and check whether pause or sleep mode is on. If it is, that's the whole problem. If it isn't, then work outward to the phone.

Is Instagram's own pause or sleep mode on?

Check this first, in the app:

1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon at the top right.

2. Tap Settings, then Notifications.

3. Look for the pause option at the top and switch it off if it's on.

4. Check sleep mode, and turn it off or adjust its schedule.

While you're on that screen, check the categories. Instagram lets you set notifications for likes, comments, follows, messages and live videos separately, and some categories offer a choice between everyone, people you follow, or off. A category set to off, or to people you follow, explains why some notifications arrive and others never do.

Does Focus mode block Instagram notifications?

It can. On an iPhone, a Focus mode silences notifications from any app that isn't on its allowed list, and Focus modes can switch on automatically on a schedule, while you drive or when you open certain apps. On Android, Do Not Disturb does the same job, and some phones add their own modes on top.

Check the phone in this order:

  • Notification permission. In the phone's settings, open the apps list, find Instagram, and make sure notifications are allowed, including on the lock screen and as banners.
  • Focus or Do Not Disturb. If one is on, either turn it off or add Instagram to the apps allowed to notify you during it.
  • Battery saving. Low Power Mode on iPhone and battery optimisation on Android can delay or stop apps from checking for new activity in the background. Exempt Instagram if notifications only fail when the battery is low.
  • Notification summary. On an iPhone, a scheduled summary collects notifications from chosen apps and delivers them in a batch. If Instagram is in it, notifications arrive hours late by design.

Why are my Instagram notifications delayed?

Delays usually come from the phone rather than Instagram. Battery saving modes, a scheduled notification summary, a weak connection, or the app being restricted from running in the background all mean the notification is held until the phone next checks.

The pattern tells you which. Notifications that all arrive at once when you open Instagram point to background restrictions or a summary. Notifications that are late only on mobile data point to the connection or a data saver setting. Late notifications on one phone and not on another logged into the same account point to that phone's settings.

How do you turn on post notifications for someone?

From their profile. As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center describes it this way: go to the profile of someone you follow, tap the notification bell at the top right, and choose what to be notified about, such as their posts, Stories, Reels or live videos.

This is separate from your general settings. If you're not hearing about one person's posts, the bell on their profile is the setting that controls it, and it's off by default for everyone you follow. You can only turn it on for accounts you follow.

Why do I get notifications but nothing shows?

A notification is a snapshot of something that happened. By the time you tap it, the thing may have changed: a comment deleted, a Story expired, a like taken back, a message unsent. Instagram then opens to nothing, or to the post without the activity you were told about.

It can also be about the account. If you're logged into more than one account, a notification may belong to an account you're not currently using, and tapping it switches accounts or lands somewhere unexpected. And if comments or replies seem to vanish after a notification, why you can't see comments on Instagram covers the filters and restrictions that hide them.

Does Instagram limit notifications?

Instagram doesn't push every single action. Your category choices decide a lot of it, and the Activity screen inside the app, the heart icon, is the complete record of likes, comments, follows and mentions. If something isn't on your lock screen, check there before assuming it was lost.

On a busy post, Instagram rolls likes together in the Activity screen, one entry naming a few accounts and a count of others, so a hundred likes don't read as a hundred separate events. Expect the alerts on your lock screen to be thinner than the activity behind them. If you want to see exactly who interacted, who liked your Instagram post shows where the full list lives.

How do you reset Instagram notification settings?

There's no single reset button, so go through it in steps, testing after each one:

  • Switch off any pause and sleep mode, and set each category back to the option you want.
  • Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play. Old versions are a common cause of notifications that stop after a phone update.
  • Log out of Instagram and log back in. This re-registers the phone for notifications.
  • On Android, clear the app's cache from the phone's app settings.
  • Delete and reinstall the app, then allow notifications when the phone asks. If you declined that prompt the first time, the phone's settings are where to allow it now.

When the account itself is the issue

If everything above is fine and activity has simply dropped, notifications may be working and there's just less to notify you about. That's a reach question, not a settings one. Instagram Account Status shows whether anything is limiting how your posts are recommended. For the follower number visitors see on your profile, Instagram followers add to it from your public handle, with no password, and without changing how Instagram ranks your posts. Every Instagram service is on the Instagram page.

Questions people ask about Instagram notifications

Why am I not getting Instagram notifications?

Usually because a pause or sleep mode is on inside Instagram, the phone isn't allowing Instagram to notify you, or a Focus or Do Not Disturb mode is silencing it. Check those three in order.

Where are Instagram notification settings?

Go to your profile, tap the menu icon, then Settings, then Notifications. That screen has the pause option, sleep mode and the settings for each type of notification.

Why are my Instagram notifications delayed?

Most delays come from the phone: battery saving, a scheduled notification summary, background restrictions or a weak connection. Exempt Instagram from battery optimisation and remove it from any summary.

How do I get notified when someone posts on Instagram?

Open their profile, tap the notification bell at the top right, and choose posts, Stories, Reels or live videos. It only works for accounts you follow and is off by default.

Does iPhone Focus mode stop Instagram notifications?

Yes, if Instagram isn't on the Focus mode's allowed list. Focus modes can also switch on automatically, so check the schedules in the phone's Focus settings.

How do I fix Instagram notifications that stopped working?

Turn off any pause or sleep mode, allow notifications in the phone's settings, update the app, then log out and back in. If that fails, reinstall Instagram and allow notifications when asked.
