Is SoundCloud Free? What Listeners and Artists Get Without Paying

SoundCloud is free on both sides of the play button. The limits are different on each side, and that is where the paid plans come in.

Updated October 2026

Is SoundCloud free? Yes: listening and uploading both cost nothing. As of October 2026, a free listener streams with ads and hears some major-label tracks only as 30-second previews, and a free Basic creator account holds 2 hours of uploaded audio in total. Go and Go+ lift the listener limits, and the Artist plans lift the creator ones.

So the honest answer depends on which side you're on. A listener can use SoundCloud for years without paying. An artist can too, until the catalog outgrows two hours or they want to get paid for plays.

The part most guides skip

SoundCloud is a streaming service where anyone can upload audio and anyone can listen, and that open upload is why it has a free tier on both sides. Its Help Center, as of October 2026, describes tens of millions of tracks available free, and a separate layer of major-label and independent catalog that subscribers get in full.

For artists, free also means a public play count from day one. Every upload shows its plays to anyone who opens it, whether the account pays or not, and that number is what a new listener reads before pressing play. How SoundCloud counts plays explains what goes into it, and SoundCloud plays on Hourden adds to it with only the track's public URL.

The sections below follow SoundCloud's Help Center as of October 2026. SoundCloud renames plans and moves limits from time to time, and one of its own pages disagrees with the others on the free upload limit, which is covered below.

Is SoundCloud free to listen?

Yes. You can stream on the web or in the app without paying, and a free account lets you like, follow, comment and build playlists.

The free limits are about catalog and interruptions. Some tracks from major labels and other rights holders play as 30-second previews for free listeners and in full only with SoundCloud Go+; SoundCloud marks those with a Go+ label on the track. Whether a track is free in full or a Go+ track is decided by the rights holder, not by SoundCloud. Free listening also carries ads, and offline listening isn't included.

Most independent uploads, which are the bulk of what makes SoundCloud different, play in full for everyone.

Is SoundCloud free to upload?

Yes, up to a limit on total audio. SoundCloud's Uploading FAQ and its plan comparison table both put the free Basic plan at 2 hours of upload time across the whole account, as of October 2026. One summary line on the plans page still says 3 hours, which is the limit of the paid Artist plan, so check the figure on your own upload page if the difference matters.

What happens at the limit, per the same FAQ:

  • Over 2 hours, you can't upload new tracks until you delete older ones or upgrade.
  • If you downgrade from Artist Pro to free with more than 2 hours uploaded, your oldest tracks are hidden from listeners, not deleted.
  • Hidden tracks keep their plays, likes and comments, and come back with them if you get under the limit or upgrade again.
  • Nobody else can stream or download a hidden track; its page shows a disabled player.

How do you upload for free?

Sign up, choose Upload in the top navigation, and drop in your files. SoundCloud accepts WAV, FLAC, AIFF, ALAC, MP3, AAC and other formats, and recommends lossless files. How to upload songs to SoundCloud covers the fields that help a track get found.

What is the difference between Go, Go+ and Artist?

Go and Go+ are for listening; Artist and Artist Pro are for uploading. They're billed from the same account, which is why they get confused, but paying for one doesn't give you the other. Cancelling a SoundCloud subscription works plan by plan in the same way.

From SoundCloud's Choosing the Right Subscription page, as of October 2026:

  • SoundCloud Go: ad-free listening and offline playback.
  • SoundCloud Go+: everything in Go, plus full access to the catalog, including tracks free listeners hear as previews, and high-quality audio.
  • SoundCloud DJ: everything in Go+, plus the catalog inside supported DJ software.
  • Basic (free creator plan): up to 2 hours of uploads and basic fan insights.
  • Artist: up to 3 hours of uploads, 2 distributed and monetized tracks a month, 1 mastering credit and 3 track replacements a month; available only in select territories.
  • Artist Pro: unlimited upload time, distribution to more than 60 services, unlimited monetized tracks, advanced insights and 3 mastering credits a month.

Does free SoundCloud have ads?

Yes. Free listening is supported by ads, and Go, Go+ and DJ all list ad-free listening as the first thing they add. There's no ad-free option below Go.

Who sees ads and where the ad money goes is its own subject: does SoundCloud have ads covers how often they play, which uploads carry them and what artists earn from them. The short version for this question is that ads are the price of the free listening tier, and the subscription is how you stop paying it.

Can you download songs for free on SoundCloud?

Only when the artist allows it, and only on the web. SoundCloud's Help Center says signed-in users can download a track on the web with the download button under the waveform, if the uploader has enabled downloads in the track's Permissions tab. If there's no button, the uploader chose not to offer the file. Playlists can't be downloaded as a whole.

On a phone, you can't download a track to keep. What Go and Go+ add instead is offline listening: saving your Likes, playlists or Library inside the app to play without a connection, which stops working if the subscription ends.

Some artists also sell paid downloads, an option SoundCloud's Help Center describes for eligible Artist Pro creators in the United States. Third-party sites that rip tracks from SoundCloud aren't a SoundCloud feature, and downloading that way skips the artist's permission entirely.

Can free accounts monetize?

Not through SoundCloud's own monetization. Its Help Center says Artist and Artist Pro subscribers can set up monetization in the SoundCloud for Artists dashboard, and SoundCloud doesn't switch it on automatically. A free Basic account can upload and build an audience, but it has no monetized tracks.

The eligibility rules apply on every plan: only original content you own all the rights to, so unofficial covers, remixes, mashups, DJ sets and podcasts aren't monetizable, and tracks must be between 30 seconds and 10 minutes long. Payouts follow fan-powered royalties, which does SoundCloud pay artists explains.

One rule matters if you're thinking about plays from anywhere other than real listeners. SoundCloud's Monetization Terms, updated effective October 31, 2025, reaffirm that artificial streaming isn't permitted and that SoundCloud may reset stream counts. Keep monetized tracks away from any paid play service.

What does a free artist account still get?

More than the limits suggest. The free tier keeps the parts of SoundCloud that made it matter: a public profile, comments on the waveform, reposts that carry a track into other people's feeds, and a play count anyone can see.

That public count is where a new upload is weakest. A track with very few plays asks a stranger to take a chance, and some artists add SoundCloud plays to an unmonetized upload so it doesn't open near zero. That changes the number listeners see; it doesn't change the track, reposts or who follows you, and it isn't free. Every SoundCloud service is on the SoundCloud page.

Questions people ask about SoundCloud's free plan

Is SoundCloud completely free?

Listening and uploading are free with limits. Free listeners get ads and 30-second previews on some tracks; free creators get 2 hours of total uploads. Paid plans remove those limits.

How much can you upload on SoundCloud for free?

Two hours of audio across the account, according to SoundCloud's Uploading FAQ as of October 2026. Over the limit, you can't upload new tracks until you delete some or upgrade.

Why do some SoundCloud songs only play 30 seconds?

They're Go+ tracks. The rights holder made them available in full only to Go+ subscribers, so free listeners hear a 30-second preview.

Is SoundCloud Go the same as Go+?

No. Go removes ads and adds offline playback. Go+ adds full access to the whole catalog and high-quality audio on top.

Can I make money on a free SoundCloud account?

Not through SoundCloud's monetization, which is set up by Artist and Artist Pro subscribers. Free accounts can still upload, build fans and link to other income.

Do my tracks get deleted if I stop paying for Artist Pro?

No. If you have more than 2 hours uploaded, the oldest tracks are hidden from listeners and keep their stats, and they come back if you get under the limit or upgrade.
