How to Make Your X (Twitter) Account Private
X doesn't use the word private. The switch is called Protect your posts, and it changes who reads, reposts and finds everything you've written.
How to make a Twitter account private: on X the setting is called Protect your posts. Open Settings and privacy, tap Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging, and switch on Protect your posts. From then on only approved followers can read your posts, and anyone new has to send a request you approve.
The change is immediate and reversible, and it applies to everything at once: old posts, new posts and the permanent links to them. There is no way on X to protect some posts and leave others public. The account is either protected or it isn't.
A protected X account is what most people still call a private Twitter account. As of October 2026, X's help center describes the effect in a few lines: once your posts are protected, only you and your followers can see them, including in X search, and they don't appear in third-party search engines such as Google. Followers can't repost or quote them. New followers have to be approved.
That makes protection a strong privacy tool and a hard stop for growth. Everything that depends on strangers reaching the profile stops, from reposts to search to the services that work on the public follower count. X followers is one of those: delivery needs a public account, because every follow to a protected one waits on an approval that only you can give.
The rest of this guide covers the steps on each device, what other people still see, and what to check before you turn protection off again. Likes are a separate question, since X made them private for everyone in 2024; are likes on X private covers that.
How do you protect your posts on X, step by step?
On the iPhone and Android apps, as of October 2026:
1. Tap your profile photo at the top left to open the menu.
2. Tap Settings and privacy.
3. Tap Privacy and safety.
4. Under Audience and tagging, switch on Protect your posts.
On x.com in a browser, click More in the left sidebar, then Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging, and tick Protect your posts.
A padlock appears next to your name once it's on. If you can't see the option, search Settings for protect; X renames menu sections from time to time, but the switch has kept the same name.
What happens when you protect your posts on X?
Five things change the moment you switch it on:
- Only your current followers, and people you approve later, can read your posts.
- Your posts appear in X search only for you and your followers, and they stop appearing in outside search engines.
- Followers can't repost or quote your posts. The repost icon is greyed out for them.
- Permanent links to your posts open only for followers. Anyone else who follows a shared link sees nothing.
- Posts you published while public are protected too, unless someone already saw them in their timeline before the change.
What stays the same
Nobody is unfollowed, and nobody is notified. Your existing followers keep reading as before. Your profile picture, header, name, bio and follower counts remain visible to everyone, and you can still message people under the usual rules described in how to DM on X.
Can people still see a protected X account?
They can see that it exists and who it belongs to, but not what it says. A visitor who doesn't follow you sees the profile header, the padlock, the follower and following counts and a message that the posts are protected, with a button to request to follow.
The counts are worth noticing. On a protected profile, the follower number is the only signal a stranger gets about the account, so it carries more weight than it does on a public one. The lists behind those counts stay closed to non-followers, as how to see who someone follows on X explains.
Screenshots are the one thing protection can't stop. Any approved follower can still capture a post and share the image elsewhere. Protection controls access through X, not what an approved reader does next.
How do you approve follower requests on X?
Requests collect in a separate list rather than in your notifications feed. While any are waiting, X shows a Follower requests entry in your account menu, the one that opens from your profile photo on the app. Open it, and accept or decline each account.
Declining doesn't notify the person, and they can request again later. Approving gives them the same access as every other follower, including all your older posts, so look at the profile before you accept.
If someone you approved turns out to be a problem, you don't need to block them. How to remove followers on X explains how to drop a follower quietly, which on a protected account also cuts their access to your posts.
Do protected posts show in search?
Only for you and your followers. To everyone else, protected posts don't appear in X search, and X says they won't appear in third-party search engines either.
Old results can take time to vanish from outside search engines. A cached copy or a snippet may linger until the engine revisits the page, and X doesn't control that schedule. Pages of posts that were already shared, embedded or archived elsewhere while you were public aren't erased by protecting the account.
Your profile itself remains findable by name and handle in X search, because the header is public. What disappears is your writing.
Can private accounts reply to public posts on X?
You can reply, but most people won't see it. X's help center notes that replies you send to an account that doesn't follow you won't be seen by that account, because only your followers can see your posts. The same goes for everyone else reading the thread: unless they follow you, your reply is invisible to them.
That makes a protected account a poor fit for joining public conversations, customer service threads or replies to brands. If you rely on any of those, you either accept that your replies only reach your followers, or you post from a separate public account.
Bookmarks, likes and follows still work normally from a protected account. Are X bookmarks public explains what the author of a post can see when you save it.
Can you make your X account public again?
Yes, by switching Protect your posts off in the same place. Before you do, open your follower requests and deal with anything still pending. X's help page puts reviewing pending requests before the switch, so accept or decline them first rather than assuming they carry over.
Once public, your posts, including the old ones, become readable by anyone, appear in X search and can be reposted and quoted again. Outside search engines may take a while to pick them back up.
Going public is also what reopens growth. Reposts carry posts to new people again, and services that work on the follower count can deliver: buy Twitter followers needs a public account and changes the number visitors read, nothing more. For the organic side, how to get followers on X covers what tends to work, and every X guide and service is on the X page.
Questions people ask about private X accounts
How do I make my Twitter account private?
On X, open Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then Audience and tagging, and switch on Protect your posts. A padlock appears next to your name and new followers need your approval.
What does Protect your posts do on X?
It limits your posts to approved followers, hides them from X search for everyone else and from outside search engines, and stops followers from reposting or quoting them.
Can people see my followers if my X account is protected?
The follower and following counts stay visible on the profile header. The posts are what's hidden from anyone who isn't an approved follower.
Can I protect only some of my posts on X?
No. Protection applies to the whole account, including posts published before you switched it on. For individual posts, the options are deleting them or limiting who can reply.

No. Everyone who already follows you stays and keeps access, and nobody is notified. Only new followers have to request and be approved.
Can a protected X account reply to public posts?
It can, but the reply is only visible to your own followers. The author of the post and anyone else who doesn't follow you won't see it.
