Why Are Some Songs Not on Instagram?
The song exists, your friend can use it and you can't. Three things decide that, and only one of them is in your settings.
Why are some songs not on Instagram? Because Instagram's licensed music library depends on three things: the rights deals Meta has with labels, the country you're in and your account type. Some business accounts and some post types get no access to the licensed library at all, and a song can disappear when a licensing agreement changes.
That's why the same search returns a song for one person and nothing for another. Neither of you is doing anything wrong. You're looking at different libraries. The rest of this guide goes through each cause, what to do about a Reel that got muted, and the free library Instagram offers when the licensed one is closed to you.
As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center explains the music library in plain terms. Meta has to comply with its agreements with the rights holders of the music in its licensed library, and the music there is meant for personal, non-commercial use. To keep it that way, certain business accounts and certain types of posts don't have access to the library, and licensed music may not be available in some countries or regions.
The same page names the alternative. Accounts without the licensed library can use Meta's Sound Collection, more than 14,000 songs and sounds that can be used in Reels and Stories without paying royalties, including for commercial purposes such as ads. You find it by swiping up and choosing the Music sticker in Stories, or by tapping Audio in the Reels camera.
For anyone posting Reels, music is part of what makes a video watchable, and a Reel that loses its track mid-life loses viewers with it. That's the setting where Instagram Reels views gets ordered, for a reel that's already public, to keep the view count from stalling while you fix the audio.
Why can't I add music to my Instagram story?
Instagram's audio help lists the reasons a song you look for isn't there:
- The licensed music library isn't available for your account type.
- It isn't available in your country or region.
- Meta's licensing agreements with the rights holders have changed, so a song that was there has been withdrawn.
Do business accounts have fewer songs on Instagram?
Often, yes. Instagram says certain business accounts don't have access to the licensed music library, because that library is licensed for personal, non-commercial use. A business account is, by definition, an account that may be selling something, and the labels' deals don't cover that.
The wording is certain business accounts, not all of them, so two business accounts can see different results. What a restricted business account gets instead is the Sound Collection, which is cleared for commercial use.
Creator accounts are the other professional account type, built for individuals making content rather than for companies. If you switched to a business account for the contact buttons and analytics and then lost songs, that switch is the most likely cause. You can change the professional account type in your settings, under the account type and tools section, and how to tell an Instagram account's status shows where restrictions on the account itself are listed.
Why is a song available for some people and not others?
Because each person's library is a combination of their country and their account. Licensing deals are signed territory by territory, so a song cleared in one country may not be cleared next door. Instagram's help says plainly that licensed music may not be available in some countries or regions.
The same logic explains a stranger case: a Reel that plays with music for you and silently for a friend abroad. Instagram's audio help says you may not hear audio on someone else's content when the audio isn't available in your country, when the track was removed or when the rights holder blocked it.
Travel can change your library too. The music available is tied to where you are, so a song can appear or vanish when you're in another country, and come back when you return.
Can you use music from Spotify on Instagram?
Not as a soundtrack. Spotify and Instagram connect through sharing, not through the music library. From the Spotify app you can share a song to your Instagram Story, which shows the song's card and links back to Spotify, and Instagram has a help article on sharing Spotify music as a note. Neither puts the Spotify recording under your own video.
If the song you want is in Instagram's library, add it from there. If it isn't, Spotify won't get around that, and neither will playing the track out loud while you record: Instagram's audio help lists a rights holder blocking content because it contains their material as one reason audio gets muted.
Why did my Reel get muted?
Instagram's audio help gives three reasons your own content can end up muted:
- Your account doesn't have access to the licensed music library, so the song you used can't stay on the post.
- Meta's licensing agreements with the rights holders changed after you posted.
- A rights holder blocked the content because it contains material that belongs to them, which is common with music played in the background or added in another editing app.
How do you get the full music library back?
Work through the causes in the order you can control them:
1. Check the account type. If you're on a business account and don't need it, switching to a creator or personal account is the change most people make when songs disappear. Weigh it first: a business account has features you may rely on.
2. Update the app. A stale version can show a stale library. If it's already current, clearing the Instagram cache is the next cheap thing to try.
3. Use the right post type. Instagram says certain types of posts don't have access to the library, so a song available for Reels may not be offered elsewhere.
4. Accept what's regional. If a song isn't licensed in your country, no setting changes that.
If none of this brings a song back, Meta's Sound Collection is the library every account can use, commercial accounts included. A muted Reel can also be fixed in place: Instagram's audio help says you may be able to replace the muted track, which keeps the post and its comments instead of deleting and reposting.
Does a muted Reel lose views?
It tends to, because the audio is part of why people watch. A Reel built around a song can feel broken in silence, and viewers swipe away sooner, which is the signal Instagram reads when deciding how far to show a Reel. Replacing the muted audio quickly limits the damage.
The view count itself isn't reset. Views already counted stay on the Reel; what counts as a view on Instagram explains how Reel plays are counted. What drops is the pace of new views.
While you swap the track, the visible count is what a new viewer reads first. Instagram Reels views adds to that count for one public reel, from its link, with nothing asked from inside your account. It doesn't bring the music back or change how Instagram ranks the Reel. How long an Instagram Reel can be covers the other format limits, and every Instagram service is on the Instagram page.
Questions people ask about music on Instagram
Why are some songs not on Instagram?
Instagram's licensed music library depends on Meta's deals with rights holders, your country and your account type. Some business accounts and post types have no access, and songs can be withdrawn when licences change.
Do Instagram business accounts have limited music?
Certain business accounts can't use the licensed library, which is meant for personal, non-commercial use. They can use Meta's Sound Collection, more than 14,000 songs and sounds cleared for commercial use.
Why can my friend use a song on Instagram and I can't?
Your libraries differ. Licensing varies by country, and access varies by account type, so the same song can be available on one account and missing on another.
Can I add Spotify songs to an Instagram Reel?
No. You can share a Spotify song to your Story or as a note, which links to Spotify, but the soundtrack of a Reel has to come from Instagram's own audio library.
Why was the audio on my Reel muted?
Instagram lists three reasons: your account lacks access to the licensed library, licensing agreements changed, or a rights holder blocked the content. You may be able to replace the muted audio.
What is Meta Sound Collection?
A library of more than 14,000 songs and sounds that any account can use in Reels and Stories without royalties, including for ads. Find it through the Music sticker in Stories or Audio in the Reels camera.
