Is There a Way to Easily Switch Discord Accounts? The Built-In Switcher
Discord has had a proper account switcher for years. It lives behind your avatar, holds five accounts, and works best on desktop.
Is there a way to easily switch Discord accounts? Yes. Discord's built-in Account Switcher keeps up to five accounts signed in on desktop: click your avatar at the bottom left, choose Switch Accounts, and pick one, with no logging out. On phones there's no reliable switcher, so the usual workaround is the browser.
Having more than one account is allowed. What Discord's Community Guidelines forbid is using a second account to get around a ban, to spam or to fake engagement, and that's where alt accounts get people into trouble.
Discord's Account Switcher is a menu in the desktop app that stores sessions for several of your accounts and swaps between them in one click. Discord's Help Center FAQ for it, as of October 2026, sets the limit at five accounts and notes that the switcher doesn't show other people which accounts you move between.
The usual reasons for wanting it are ordinary: a personal account and a work one, a separate account for a community you moderate, a test account for checking how a server looks to a new member. That last one is how many server owners first notice what a stranger sees on their invite: the server name, the icon and the member count, which is the number Discord members on Hourden adds to, using only a permanent invite link.
The steps below describe the desktop app as of October 2026. Discord moves labels between updates, so if a word differs on your screen, look in the same place: the panel at the bottom left with your avatar.
How do you switch Discord accounts on desktop?
The first time, you add the accounts; after that it's one click.
1. In the desktop app, click your avatar at the bottom left, in the panel with the microphone and settings icons.
2. Choose Switch Accounts.
3. Click Add an account and sign in to the second account, with its password and two-factor code if it has one.
4. Repeat for up to five accounts in total.
From then on, open the same menu and click the account you want. Discord swaps to it without signing the others out, and you can switch back the same way. Discord's FAQ notes that some preferences reset when you switch, since each account carries its own settings.
How many Discord accounts can you switch between?
Five, according to Discord's Account Switcher FAQ as of October 2026. If you need a sixth, you have to remove one from the switcher first.
Two things the limit doesn't change. It's a cap on accounts stored in one app, not on how many accounts you may own. And every stored account is fully signed in on that device, so anyone with access to the computer can open all five. On a shared computer, the switcher is a convenience that costs privacy.
Can you switch accounts on Discord mobile?
Not reliably. Discord documents the Account Switcher for desktop, and as of October 2026 most phone users don't see a switch option in the iOS or Android app. Some report an Add account entry under the avatar menu, but it isn't consistent across devices and versions.
The workarounds that do work:
- Keep your main account in the app and sign in to the second one at discord.com in your phone's browser.
- On Android phones that offer it, use the system's app cloning or dual apps feature to run a second copy of Discord with the other account.
- Sign out and back in, which is slow but always works; a password manager makes it bearable.
Does switching accounts log you out?
No. That's the point of the switcher: every account you add stays signed in, and switching only changes which one is active in the window. You keep receiving notifications for the active account; the others catch up when you switch to them.
Signing out is a separate action. If you log out of an account through Settings, it's removed from that device, and you'll need to add it to the switcher again next time.
How do you remove an account from the switcher?
Open the avatar menu, choose Switch Accounts, and use the option to log out or remove next to the account you want gone. That signs it out of the app on that device; the account itself isn't deleted or changed.
It's worth doing on any computer you're about to stop using, sell or lend, because each stored account is a live session. If you think a session is somewhere it shouldn't be, change the account's password, which signs it out elsewhere, and turn on two-factor authentication.
Is having two Discord accounts allowed?
Yes. Discord doesn't prohibit owning several accounts, and building a switcher for them is about as clear a signal as a platform gives. The rules are about what the accounts do.
Discord's Community Guidelines, last updated August 29, 2025, draw the lines that matter for alts:
- Don't evade permanent Discord-level enforcement, including by creating new accounts or using existing ones after being removed.
- Ban or block evasion is listed under harassment, so using an alt to reach someone who blocked you, or a server that banned you, breaks the rules.
- Don't engage with the service inauthentically, which the guidelines say includes artificially inflating server membership and manipulating engagement metrics.
- Each account must be associated with a human; self-bots and user-bots aren't allowed.
Can alt accounts get banned?
Yes, for the same things as any account, and an alt used to dodge a ban is itself the violation. If your main account is removed from Discord, the guidelines say you may not keep using other accounts to come back.
Server-level action works differently from a Discord ban. A server's moderators can kick, ban or time out members; a timeout set from the app lasts up to a week, and longer ones, up to 28 days, are only available through bots and the API. Joining that server on an alt while your main account is banned or timed out is ban evasion, and moderators who spot it can report it to Discord. Is there a way to bypass a Discord timeout explains why a timeout follows the membership rather than the session.
For owners, the honest use of a second account is the testing one: seeing your server the way a new member does. If the invite preview shows a near-empty count, Discord members changes that number with a permanent invite link and no login; growing the conversation behind it is covered in how to grow a Discord server. Every Discord service is listed on the Discord page.
Questions people ask about switching Discord accounts
How do I switch accounts on Discord without logging out?
On desktop, click your avatar at the bottom left, choose Switch Accounts and pick the account. Add each account once, and they all stay signed in.
What is the account limit on Discord's Account Switcher?
Five accounts, according to Discord's Account Switcher FAQ as of October 2026. Remove one to add another.
Is there an account switcher on the Discord mobile app?
Not reliably as of October 2026. Most people use the app for one account and discord.com in the phone's browser for the other.
Can people see that my accounts are linked?
Discord's FAQ says the switcher doesn't show other users which accounts you switch between. Discord itself still sees accounts used from the same device.
Is it against Discord rules to have an alt account?
No. Owning more than one account is allowed; using one to evade a ban, harass, spam or inflate engagement is not.
Do I get notifications for all my switched accounts?
You get them for the active account. The others update when you switch to them, since only one account is active in the app at a time.
