How to Turn Off Location on Instagram (Posts and the Map)
Instagram has three location switches, and turning off one leaves the other two exactly as they were. Here is each one and what it controls.
How to turn off location on Instagram depends on which location you mean. To stop sharing on the Instagram Map, open Messages, tap Map, tap Settings and choose No one. To remove a place from a post, tap the three dots, Edit, the location name, then Remove location. To block the app entirely, use your phone's settings.
Those are three separate switches, and Instagram's Help Center is explicit that the Map setting and your phone's location services are independent: turning off the Map doesn't stop Instagram from using location services, and the reverse is also true. Most people who think they've turned location off have flipped one of the three.
Location on Instagram works at three levels. The Instagram Map shares your current location with people you choose. A location tag attaches a named place, such as a city, a park or a café, to a single post. And your phone's location permission decides whether the app can read your position at all.
The Map is the newest of the three and the one behind most of the worry. Instagram launched it on August 6, 2025, starting in the US, as a map at the top of your inbox. Location sharing on it is off by default, and as of October 2026 Instagram's Help Center describes it as something you opt into, with a choice of who sees you. The confusion came from the other thing the Map shows: posts with location tags. People who can see your content can find tagged posts on the Map, which made some users think their live position was being published when it was really a tag from a post.
So the right fix depends on what you want hidden. If it's where you are now, that's the Map setting. If it's where a photo was taken, that's the tag. If it's anything Instagram could learn about where your phone is, that's the system permission. None of these affects your audience or your counts, and growing a public profile doesn't require sharing any of them: an order for Instagram followers, for instance, needs only your public handle. The sections below take each switch in turn.
How do you stop sharing your location on the Instagram Map?
From the Map's own settings, following the steps in Instagram's Help Center:
- Tap Messages at the bottom of the app.
- Tap Map at the top of your inbox.
- Tap Settings at the top right of the map.
- Choose No one to stop sharing, or change who you share with.
- Save the change. If you chose to keep sharing with fewer people, tap Share location at the bottom to confirm.
Reading the icon on the Map settings
Instagram uses three signs on the Settings button. A blue arrow means you're sharing your location with the audience you picked. A red dot means you're not sharing. An orange triangle means your phone's location permission is off, so you couldn't share even if you wanted to.
Hiding your location in certain places
If you want to keep sharing in general but not at home or work, the Map lets you set up to three hidden places. When you're at one, nobody sees you on the map. You can also hide your location from specific accounts without changing it for everyone else.
Who can see your location on the Instagram Map?
Only people you choose, and only accounts that have a follow relationship with you. The Help Center says you can share your location only with accounts you follow that also follow you, and the options at launch were your mutual followers, your Close Friends list, a hand-picked list, or no one.
Your shared location updates when you open Instagram or return to it while it's running in the background. If you don't open the app for 24 hours, your location disappears from the Map.
Teen accounts have tighter limits on who they can share with, and parents who use Instagram's supervision tools can control whether a teen shares a location at all.
If you'd like to see someone else's location, you can send a request from the People list on the Map. They're notified of the request, but if they decline, you aren't told.
How do you remove a location tag from an Instagram post?
Edit the post. Instagram's Help Center gives the steps:
1. Tap the three dots above the photo or video.
2. Tap Edit.
3. Tap the location name, then Edit location.
4. Tap Remove location, then Done.
The same screen lets you change the location to a broader place instead, such as a city rather than a street. To add a location you left off, use Add location from the same Edit screen.
A tag matters beyond the post. When someone taps the location on your photo, they see it alongside other content tagged at the same place on the Instagram Map. Who can see and interact with that content depends on your account's privacy settings, so on a public account a tagged post is visible to anyone who opens that place.
Does Instagram show your exact location?
A location tag doesn't. It shows the named place you picked from Instagram's list, and you can't create a new place from the app, so a tag is only as precise as the place you chose. Tagging a neighborhood reveals far less than tagging a specific café.
The Map can be precise if you share on it, since it uses your phone's location when you open the app. That's the reason to use No one, hidden places, or a short list of people you'd trust with your whereabouts.
Stories carry their own risk that no switch covers: a photo of your street, your school logo or a landmark in the background says where you are as clearly as a tag. Posting after you've left a place, rather than while you're there, solves most of it.
How do you turn off precise location for Instagram on your phone?
In the phone's settings, not in Instagram. This is the switch that decides whether the app can read your location at all.
- iPhone: open Settings, scroll to Instagram, tap Location, and choose Never, or keep While Using the App and turn off Precise Location so the app gets only an approximate area.
- Android: open Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Permissions, then Location. Choose Don't allow, or keep access and turn off Use precise location.
- To check the result, open the Map in Instagram's inbox: an orange triangle on Settings means the app no longer has location permission.
What you lose by turning it off
Location suggestions when you tag a post, nearby results in search, and the Map's sharing features. Posting, Stories, Reels and messages all work the same without it.
Does a location tag help reach on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't publish that a location tag increases distribution, and there's no reason to keep one on for reach if it bothers you. What a tag does do is add one more place your post can be found: people who open a location see posts tagged there. For a café, a venue or a local business, that's useful. For a personal account posting from home, it's mostly exposure.
Reach on Instagram depends far more on how people respond to a post than on its metadata. How to increase reach on Instagram explains the follower and non-follower halves of it. And if your concern is less about location and more about who can see your account at all, how to hide followers on Instagram and how to know if someone restricted you cover the other privacy controls people reach for.
Turning location off changes nothing on your profile's public numbers. If you're growing a public account and want the follower count to reflect it, buy Instagram followers asks only for the public handle, never a login or a location. More guides for the network are on the Instagram page.
