How to Unarchive a Story on Instagram

Instagram has an unarchive button for posts and none for Stories. What you can do instead is publish the old Story again, or pin it to your profile.

Updated October 2026

How to unarchive a story on Instagram: you can't restore it, but you can share it again. Open your profile, tap the menu, choose Archive, open the Story and tap Share, then Your Story. It goes up as a new Story whose views start at zero. To keep it on your profile instead, add it to a Highlight.

That's the difference most guides blur. Archived posts can be restored to your grid with a Show on profile option. Archived Stories can't be restored, only republished or pinned, which is why a reshared Story behaves like a brand-new one, starting with Instagram story views counted from zero.

The part most guides skip

Instagram uses the word archive for two things that work differently.

When you archive a post, you hide it from your profile on purpose, and Instagram's Help Center describes how to show it again: open the post in your Archive and choose Show on profile. It returns to its old spot in the grid with its likes and comments intact. That's an unarchive in the true sense.

A Story reaches the archive another way. You don't archive it; it expires. Instagram saves every Story you post to your Stories Archive automatically, and the Story you see there is a copy kept for you after the original stopped existing. There's no live Story left to restore. That's why the only options in the archive are to share it, which publishes a new Story built from the old one, or to add it to a Highlight, which displays it on your profile without making it a Story again.

Can you put an archived Instagram story back up?

Yes, as a new Story. Here's the sequence in current versions of the app:

1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon, the three lines at the top right.

2. Tap Archive. If you land on posts, switch to the Stories Archive at the top.

3. Open the Story you want.

4. Tap Share at the bottom of the screen.

5. Choose Your Story, or pick people to send it to by message instead.

Before it publishes, you get the Story editor, so you can add a new sticker, text or a date label. The Story then runs for the usual period and ends up in your archive again, as a second entry next to the first.

Where is the Instagram story archive?

Behind the menu on your profile, under Archive. Instagram's Help Center describes Stories as saved to the archive automatically, so there's no need to save them to your phone, and each saved Story is marked with the date you posted it, so finding an old one is a matter of scrolling back to the right day.

If the archive is empty, the setting was probably off. It lives under your Story settings, labelled Save story to archive. With it off, Instagram's Help Center says Stories you share from then on are deleted once they expire, so there's nothing to recover for that period.

Can you repost an archived story?

Yes. Sharing from the archive is exactly that. You can repost a Story you posted last week or three years ago, as long as it's in the archive.

Two details are worth knowing first. Stickers that only make sense in the moment, like a poll, a question box or a countdown, don't carry their old results into the new Story, and some interactive stickers may not carry over at all. And the old Story's mentions and links aren't guaranteed to remain tappable, so check the preview before posting.

If you want to resurface something because it performed well, consider adding it to a Highlight instead of reposting. A repost goes to the top of your followers' Story row again and some will have already seen it.

Do archived stories keep their views?

The archived copy keeps the record of what it had. The Story you share from it doesn't inherit anything. It's a new Story, so its view count, its viewer list and its replies all start from nothing.

That matters if you're resharing to get more people to see something. The total across both versions is what you got, but each one shows only its own number. If what you care about is the count a viewer sees on the new Story, Instagram story views land on a Story that is already live and need only your public handle, not your password. It changes the number on that Story; it doesn't change who Instagram puts at the front of the row.

The viewer list on the original Story stops being available a while after it expires, which how long Instagram Stories last covers, along with how a Story collects most of its views early.

Can you unarchive a story after 24 hours?

Only by sharing it again, which works at any age. There's no window during which a Story can be restored as the original. After it expires, every option starts from the archived copy.

If you posted something by mistake and want it gone, that's the opposite problem. You can delete a Story from the archive, which removes the saved copy for good.

Is the story archive private?

Yes. Instagram's Help Center says only you can see the Stories saved in your archive after they disappear from your Story. Followers, close friends and anyone else can't browse it.

What leaves the archive is only what you choose to share: a Story you republish, or a Story you put in a Highlight. Highlights appear on your profile, so they follow your account's privacy, visible to everyone on a public account and to approved followers on a private one.

How do you add an archived story to highlights?

From your profile:

1. Tap Story Highlights below your bio, then the plus icon to create one, or open an existing Highlight and choose Edit.

2. Select the Stories you want from the archive. Instagram shows everything saved there.

3. Tap Next, choose a cover and a name, and tap Add on iPhone or Done on Android.

You can also add a single Story from the archive directly: open it, tap the Highlight option at the bottom, and pick which Highlight it goes into.

A Highlight is the closest thing to a permanent unarchive. The Story stays on your profile until you remove it, and anyone who visits can watch it, which is why Highlights are where a business keeps its prices, its reviews and its how-to Stories.

What if a Highlight disappeared?

People who search for how to unarchive a highlight on Instagram usually deleted one or emptied it by removing its last Story. Highlights don't have an archive of their own. The Stories inside them were archived copies all along, so as long as your archive was on when you posted them, they're still in the Stories Archive and you can build the Highlight again from there.

If a whole account looks different, with Highlights and posts gone, check whether you archived posts by accident from the grid. Those come back with Show on profile, opened from the posts side of the Archive. For anything else that changed on your profile, the Instagram page lists the services by what each one lands on, and why your Instagram Story isn't getting views covers the Story row when a republished Story is slow to pick up.

Questions people ask about the Instagram Story archive

How do you unarchive a story on Instagram?

Open your profile, tap the menu, choose Archive, open the Story and tap Share, then Your Story. It's published again as a new Story. There's no button that restores the original.

Where do archived Instagram stories go?

To your Stories Archive, reached from the menu on your profile under Archive. Instagram saves Stories there automatically unless you turned off the save to archive setting.

Does a reshared story keep its old views?

No. A Story shared from the archive is a new Story, so its views, viewer list and replies start from zero. The archived copy keeps its own record.

Can other people see my Instagram story archive?

No. Instagram's Help Center says only you can see Stories saved in your archive. Others see a Story only if you share it again or add it to a Highlight.

How do you put an archived story in a highlight?

Open the Story in your archive and tap Highlight, or create a Highlight from your profile and select Stories from the archive. Choose a cover and name, and it appears on your profile.

Why is my Instagram story archive empty?

The save to archive setting was likely off when you posted. With it off, Instagram deletes Stories once they expire, so there's no saved copy to share again.
