What Does FYP Mean on TikTok?

The abbreviation only exists because one platform made recommendation the home screen.

Updated September 2026

FYP means For You Page: the tab TikTok opens when you launch the app. It is the recommendation feed, made of videos chosen for you by what you watch rather than by who you follow.

The reason it has an abbreviation at all is that TikTok made it the default screen. On Instagram and YouTube, the recommendation surface is somewhere you navigate to; your home is built around accounts you chose. TikTok reversed that, and the recommendation feed became the place everyone means when they talk about the app. A screen that central gets a shorthand.

Which brings the follow-up question people actually have: putting #fyp in a caption does nothing. The feed reads behaviour — how long people watch, whether they finish — and it does not read your caption as an instruction. Tagging a video with the name of the place you want it to go is not a mechanism.

The part most guides skip

Getting on the For You page is not a separate achievement from being distributed at all, and that misunderstanding is where a lot of wasted effort goes.

Every video is tested. It is shown to a small batch of viewers, and what those viewers do determines whether it is shown to more. The For You page is just where that showing happens. There is no queue you can join, no list you can get onto, and no flag on a video that marks it as FYP-eligible in the way people imagine.

So #fyp, #foryou, #viral and the rest belong to a category of hashtag that describes a wish rather than a subject. They tell the system nothing it can use, because what it needs to know is what your video is about and who might want it — and those tags are on millions of videos across every subject, which makes them useless as a signal.

The hashtags that do something are the ones that describe content. Not because hashtags are powerful on TikTok, but because they are one of several inputs helping the system work out what the video is, and a wrong or empty input makes that harder rather than easier.

For You versus Following

Two tabs at the top of the app. For You is recommendation. Following shows videos from accounts you follow.

Most people never switch, which is the single most consequential fact about TikTok for anyone posting on it. Your followers are largely not watching a feed built from their follows — they are in For You like everybody else, and your video reaches them because the system decided to serve it, not because they subscribed.

That is why follower count is a weaker asset here than on any comparable platform. It does not reserve you a slot. It gives you a slightly better chance of being one of the accounts the system tests a video with, and beyond that your video is competing on its own behaviour signals.

Why hashtags like #fyp persist

Because they are cheap, because everybody does them, and because when a video does well the person who used them concludes they worked.

That last one is the mechanism keeping the folklore alive. A video succeeds, it had #fyp on it, and the tag gets credit that belongs to the first three seconds of the clip. Nobody runs the counterfactual.

The cost of using them is small but not zero: caption space is limited and attention is finite, and tags that describe nothing crowd out tags that describe something. If you are going to use hashtags at all, using ones that say what the video is about is strictly better than using ones that say where you would like it to go.

What actually gets a video distributed

Watch time and completion first. Did people watch, did they reach the end, did they loop. Those are the signals the test batch produces and they outweigh everything else.

Interactions come second: shares, comments, likes, saves. Shares are the strongest of them because they put the video in front of new people through a human recommendation.

And the opening seconds carry most of the weight, because they determine whether the watch-time signal exists at all. A video that loses people at two seconds never generates the data that would have made it travel, however good the rest of it is.

None of this is affected by your caption's hashtags beyond the modest help of describing the subject accurately.

The other thing FYP is used to mean

People also say a video is on the FYP to mean it travelled — that it reached people who do not follow the account. That usage is looser and it is what someone usually means when they say their video hit the For You page.

You can check it rather than guess. TikTok's analytics show traffic sources per video, and For You is listed separately from Following, from your profile and from search. A video with most of its views from For You was distributed by recommendation. A video with most of its views from Following reached the people you already had.

That distinction matters when diagnosing a post. The same view count means very different things depending on which source produced it.

Getting on the For You feed

There is no entry to gain. Every eligible video is tested there, so the question is not how to get on it but what happens once you are.

What improves the outcome: a first second that stops the scroll, a clip that is exactly as long as its idea, a reason to rewatch, and a subject clear enough that the system can work out who might want it.

What does not: hashtags naming the feed, posting at a supposedly optimal hour, deleting and reposting, or any of the ritual advice that circulates in creator communities. If a video was marked ineligible for recommendation, the app says so on the video status screen, and that is a documented state rather than something to infer.

What the counter does once you are there

A video in the For You feed arrives with a visible view count, and the person receiving it reads that number before they have watched anything.

A clip showing very little gets less patience, which weakens the very watch-time signal that decides whether distribution continues. That is a human effect rather than an algorithmic one, and it is the honest place a number fits.

What it does not do is put a video on the For You page, because every video is already tested there. Anyone selling views as a route onto the FYP is selling entry to a room you were already standing in.

Questions people ask about the For You page

What does FYP stand for?

For You Page — the recommendation tab TikTok opens by default, made of videos chosen by what you watch rather than by who you follow.

Does putting #fyp on TikTok work?

No. The feed reads behaviour signals like watch time and completion, and does not treat a caption as an instruction. Hashtags describing the subject are more useful than ones naming the feed.

How do you get on the FYP?

Every eligible video is already tested there. The question is what happens once it is: whether people watch, finish and rewatch. There is no queue to join.

What is the difference between For You and Following?

For You is recommendation. Following shows accounts you follow. Most people stay on For You, which is why follower count matters less on TikTok than elsewhere.

How do I know if my video reached the For You page?

TikTok's per-video analytics list traffic sources, with For You shown separately from Following, profile and search. That tells you whether recommendation distributed it.

Why does my video have views but not from For You?

Those views came from your followers, your profile, search or a shared link. Real traffic, but it means recommendation did not pick the video up.
