Facebook counts every share in the number under your post, but it only lists the shares you're allowed to see. That's why the number and the list never match.

So when you open the list, Facebook is showing you the shares you'd be able to see anyway if you came across them in your feed. The rest are real shares, counted honestly, that belong to other people's private audiences. On a post that spreads among friends of friends, most shares can fall in that invisible part.
That's also why the share count is one of the more reliable public numbers on Facebook: you can't see where most of it went, but it counts every time the post was passed on. The number people read first, though, is usually the reaction count under the post, which is what Facebook post likes change.
How to see who shared your post on Facebook, step by step
The steps are the same whether you use the app or a browser:
- Open the post, on your profile, your Page, in a group or from your notifications.
- Find the counts line under the post, next to the reactions and comments counts.
- Tap or click the number of shares. On some layouts it appears as a share icon with a number beside it.
- Scroll the list. Each entry shows who shared it and, when you're allowed to see it, what they wrote with it.
- Tap an entry to open that share and see its own reactions and comments.

If you're an admin, the group's insights show engagement on posts, but they don't reveal shares hidden by other people's privacy settings. Nobody gets a complete roster, including admins.

What the public sees is simpler: the reaction count, the comment count and the share count, in that order, under the post.
