Why Can't I Go Live on TikTok?

One threshold explains most cases, and the other reasons are not ones anybody can appeal.

Updated October 2026

The usual reason is the follower threshold. TikTok requires 1,000 followers to unlock the live button, and below that the option simply does not appear in the create menu.

The second is age. The account holder must be at least 16 to go live, and 18 to receive gifts, and the age on the account is what counts rather than the age of the person holding the phone.

After those: a recent community guidelines strike removes live access temporarily, some regions have it restricted, and the feature has been inconsistent on desktop and on older devices.

If you are over the threshold, over 16, and in good standing, the remaining explanation is usually that the account was flagged.

The part most guides skip

The thousand-follower number deserves a caveat, because TikTok has never treated it as an absolute.

It is the published requirement and it is what the help pages say. But accounts below it have had live access, and accounts well above it have been refused, which produces a great deal of confusion and a great deal of bad advice.

The explanation is that the threshold is a gate rather than a switch. Crossing it makes you eligible; it does not guarantee the feature. TikTok also weighs account age, standing, and the region's rules, and it has granted live access manually to accounts it wanted on the surface.

What follows practically is that there is no appeal for not having the button when you are under the threshold, and there is an appeal for losing it after having it. Those are different situations with different routes, and most people searching are in the first.

The other thing worth knowing: the number is followers, not views and not likes. A video with two million views on an account with four hundred followers does not unlock anything. The gate reads the one number that is hardest to accumulate by accident, which is exactly why it was chosen.

The requirements, in order of how often they bite

A thousand followers. This is the one that stops almost everybody, and it is the published figure.

Age 16 or over on the account for live itself, and 18 or over to send or receive gifts. The date of birth entered at signup is what is checked, and correcting it later requires an appeal with identity documents.

An account in good standing. A recent violation suspends live access for a period that is not published and is not negotiable.

A supported region. Live has been restricted or withdrawn in several markets at various points, independently of anything about your account.

Where the button is when you do have it

Tap the plus to create, then swipe the mode selector along the bottom past Camera and Templates until LIVE appears.

It is at the end of the row, which is far enough that people with access have concluded they do not have it.

If LIVE is absent from the row entirely, the feature is not enabled for the account.

Live from a computer requires LIVE Studio or a stream key, and that path has its own eligibility — some accounts with mobile live access do not have desktop access.

When you had it and lost it

This is the case with an actual remedy.

Check Settings, then Account, then the safety or account status area, where TikTok lists recent violations. A strike against live content removes live access for a window.

Violations can be appealed from that screen, and appeals on live restrictions do succeed more often than appeals on video removals, because live moderation produces more false positives.

If no violation is listed and access is gone anyway, the usual cause is an automated restriction that expires on its own. There is no counter and no notification when it lifts.

What people try that changes nothing

Reinstalling the app, clearing cache and switching between the app and the website change nothing. The eligibility is on the account, not on the device.

Switching between a personal, creator and business account does not unlock it either, though it can change which sounds you may use.

Buying followers from a source that delivers accounts TikTok removes is worse than doing nothing: the count falls back below the threshold when the removals happen, and the drop itself is a signal.

And there is no customer support path for not meeting a requirement. Support can act on a restriction, not on a threshold.

Why the gate is set at followers

Live is where TikTok's money and its risk both concentrate. Gifts move real currency and a live stream cannot be reviewed before it is broadcast.

A follower threshold is the cheapest available filter: followers accumulate slowly, they are hard to fake at scale without detection, and an account that has them has a history the platform can evaluate.

For a creator this means the path to live runs through ordinary video performance, and there is no shortcut around it.

It also means the first live streams matter disproportionately. TikTok ranks live content by how many people stay, and a stream that opens to an empty room is shown to fewer people than one that does not — the same early-signal logic that governs video, applied to a format where there is no second chance.

Questions people ask about going live on TikTok

How many followers do you need to go live on TikTok?

A thousand is the published requirement. TikTok has granted access below it and withheld it above, so treat the number as a gate rather than a guarantee.

Why is the LIVE option missing from the create menu?

It sits at the end of the mode selector, past Camera and Templates. If it is absent from the row entirely, the feature is not enabled for your account.

Does age affect going live?

Yes. You must be 16 or over to go live and 18 or over to send or receive gifts, based on the date of birth on the account.

I had live access and lost it. Why?

Usually a community guidelines violation. Check the account status area in Settings, where recent violations are listed and can be appealed.

Does reinstalling the app help?

No. Eligibility is attached to the account, not the device or the app build.

Do views or likes count toward the requirement?

No. The gate reads followers only, which is why a video with millions of views on a small account unlocks nothing.
