Why Is YouTube Skipping Songs in My Playlist? The Silent Causes

YouTube rarely tells you why it jumped to the next song. In almost every case the skipped video couldn't be played for you, and the playlist moved on rather than stopping.

Updated October 2026

Why is YouTube skipping songs in your playlist? Almost always because the skipped video can't play for you: it was deleted or made private, it's blocked in your country, it's age-restricted and you're signed out, or Restricted Mode is filtering it. In YouTube Music, Restricted Mode shows Explicit songs but skips them when they come up.

The playlist doesn't stop to explain, it just moves to the next video it can play. So the fix is to find out which of those reasons applies to the songs that keep vanishing, and each one has a quick check below.

The part most guides skip

A playlist on YouTube is a list of links to other people's videos, not copies of them. When one of those videos stops being playable for you, the playlist still holds the link, but there's nothing behind it to play. The player then moves on to the next entry, which looks like a skip.

That explains why the problem comes and goes. A song that played last month can vanish today because the uploader deleted it, a copyright claim blocked it in your country, or YouTube age-restricted it. Nothing in your settings changed, but the video did. Long music playlists built from fan uploads lose songs this way all the time.

The same logic runs the other way for the people who uploaded those songs. A video that gets skipped never starts, so it never earns the view, and as of October 2026 YouTube counts a public view the moment playback starts. That's why a creator's count depends on the video actually being playable wherever it's listed, and why some creators add YouTube views to a new upload rather than waiting for playlists to find it.

Why does YouTube skip videos in a playlist?

These are the causes YouTube's own rules produce, roughly from most to least common:

  • The video was deleted, or the channel was closed. The entry stays in your playlist with no video behind it.
  • The uploader made it private. Private videos only play for people the uploader invited.
  • It's blocked in your country, often by a copyright claim on the music.
  • It's age-restricted. YouTube Help says age-restricted videos can't be watched by viewers who are signed out, under 18, or watching an embed on most third-party sites.
  • Restricted Mode is on and filtering it. YouTube Help notes that age-restricted videos don't appear for people with Restricted Mode turned on, and turning off Restricted Mode on YouTube explains why the switch sometimes won't move.
  • In YouTube Music, it's marked Explicit and Restricted Mode is on. Google says Explicit content still shows in that case, but it's skipped when you try to play it.

Do unavailable videos get skipped?

Yes, every time. A deleted, private or removed video has nothing to play, so the playlist passes over it. Many playlists show a note that unavailable videos are hidden, and the playlist's three-dot menu can usually show them again so you can see which songs disappeared.

If the titles of the hidden entries are gone, the video was deleted or the channel closed. If you can still see the title but it won't play, it's more likely private, region-blocked or restricted. Either way, the fix is to find another upload of the same song and swap it in, then remove the dead entry so the playlist stops tripping over it.

Does shuffle skip songs on YouTube?

No. Shuffle changes the order, not the selection. It can feel like songs are missing because a long playlist on shuffle takes a while to reach any one track, and repeats of favorites stand out more than gaps.

If a particular song never seems to come up on shuffle, play it directly from the playlist. If it won't play there either, it's one of the unavailable or restricted cases above, and shuffle is innocent.

Does YouTube Music handle playlists differently?

In one important way: explicit songs. Google's help page on Restricted Mode says that music and videos in YouTube Music are also filtered, and that with Restricted Mode on you still see content marked Explicit but it's skipped if you try to play it. That produces exactly the symptom people describe: the song is right there in the list, and the player jumps past it.

To check, tap your profile photo, open Settings and look for Restricted Mode; in the YouTube app on Android, Google's steps put it under Settings, then General. If it's on, switch it off, unless a school, workplace or family account manages it. On managed devices and networks, an administrator can force Restricted Mode, and you won't be able to change it yourself.

Why does my playlist stop autoplaying?

That's a different problem from skipping. A playlist plays its entries in order by itself; the Autoplay switch controls what YouTube plays after a single video ends, not the order inside a playlist. A Mix is a third case, an automatic playlist that keeps going by design, and how to turn off YouTube Mix separates it from autoplay. When playback stops altogether, the usual causes are:

  • A "continue watching?" prompt. After a long stretch without any interaction, YouTube may pause and ask if you're still there.
  • The app went to the background on a phone. Background play, with the screen off or another app open, is a YouTube Premium feature.
  • You reached the end of the playlist, with loop switched off.

How do you fix a playlist that skips?

Work through it in order:

1. Sign in. Signed-out viewers can't play age-restricted videos, and many music videos are restricted.

2. Check Restricted Mode, on YouTube and on YouTube Music separately, and switch it off if you're allowed to.

3. Show unavailable videos from the playlist menu, then replace or remove the dead entries.

4. For a song that's blocked in your country, look for an official upload from the artist or label, which is more likely to be licensed where you are.

5. Update the app and clear its cache if songs skip that play fine elsewhere.

If the speed controls are misbehaving rather than the songs, that's covered in why YouTube playback speed isn't working.

What a skipped video means for the uploader

A skip is invisible to the channel. The playlist doesn't report that it passed over a video, so a song that's region-blocked or age-restricted simply collects fewer plays where it's blocked. Since YouTube now counts a view when playback starts, a video that never starts earns nothing from that listener. What counts as a view on YouTube explains the August 2026 change and how engaged views differ.

For creators, the practical lesson is to keep music uploads licensed and correctly rated, so they play in as many playlists as possible. YouTube views adds to a video's public count; it doesn't make a blocked video playable or put it in anyone's playlist. Every YouTube service is on the YouTube page.

When YouTube playlists skip tracks

Why is YouTube skipping songs in my playlist?

The skipped videos usually can't play for you: they were deleted or made private, are blocked in your country, are age-restricted while you're signed out, or are filtered by Restricted Mode.

Why does YouTube Music skip explicit songs?

Restricted Mode is probably on. Google says that with Restricted Mode on in YouTube Music, Explicit content still appears but is skipped when you try to play it.

How do I see which songs disappeared from my playlist?

Open the playlist's three-dot menu and choose to show unavailable videos. Entries with no title were deleted; entries with a title that won't play are usually private or restricted.

Does signing in stop YouTube skipping songs?

It can. YouTube Help says age-restricted videos can't be watched by signed-out viewers or anyone under 18, so signing in to an adult account lets those songs play.

Does shuffle on YouTube skip songs?

No. Shuffle only changes the order. A song that never plays on shuffle usually won't play directly either, which points to an unavailable or restricted video.

Why does my YouTube playlist stop when I lock my phone?

Background play, with the screen off or the app in the background, is a YouTube Premium feature. Without it, playback pauses when the app leaves the screen.
