How to Delete a TikTok Story, and How Long It Lasts
A TikTok story deletes itself after a day. Deleting it sooner takes three taps, and it takes the viewer list with it.
How to delete a TikTok story: open your own story by tapping your profile photo, tap the three-dot menu on the story you want gone, and choose Delete. It disappears for everyone straight away, along with its view count and viewer list. Left alone, a story expires by itself 24 hours after you post it.
That is the whole procedure, and the reason people look it up is usually the clock, not the steps. A story was posted in a hurry, or with the wrong audience, or someone in the viewer list should not have seen it. Deleting is immediate, but it cannot reach back: anyone who already watched it, screenshotted it or saved what it said still has that.
TikTok's support page on watching stories describes them as photos or videos available to watch for 24 hours. While a story is live, a ring appears around your profile photo, and anyone who can see your account can tap it to watch. When the 24 hours pass, the story stops being viewable unless you have saved it somewhere that lasts. TikTok's help page on Stories now describes Highlights, which save Stories to your profile so they stay visible for more than 24 hours; whether you see the option depends on your app version and region.
The story's numbers follow the same clock. A story has a view count and, unlike a feed video, a list of named viewers that only you can read. Both exist only as long as the story does, so deleting a story removes them too, and an expired story's list is gone with it.
That short life is the main difference between a story and a video. A feed video keeps its public view count for as long as it stays up, and that count is what strangers read before deciding to watch. If a clip deserves a lasting audience, post it as a video instead; that public count is the number TikTok views add to, without a password and without changing who TikTok recommends the video to.
How do you delete a TikTok story?
From the TikTok app:
1. Go to your profile and tap your profile photo while the story ring is showing, or tap your own story at the top of the Friends or For You feed if it appears there.
2. Swipe to the story you want to remove, if you posted more than one.
3. Tap the three-dot menu, labelled More on some versions.
4. Tap Delete and confirm.
The story is removed for everyone immediately. If you posted several stories, each one has to be deleted separately; deleting one leaves the rest running until their own 24 hours are up.
If you saved the story to a Highlight, deleting it from the story view and removing it from the Highlight may be separate steps, so check your profile afterwards.
How long does a TikTok story last?
24 hours from the moment you post it. TikTok describes stories as available to watch for 24 hours, and after that they stop appearing in the ring around your profile photo and in other people's feeds.
Each story runs on its own clock. Post one at 9 a.m. and another at 6 p.m., and the first expires the next morning while the second stays up into the evening.
The exception is a Highlight, where the app offers it. Adding a story to a Highlight keeps it on your profile beyond the 24 hours, so a story you want people to find later should go there instead of being reposted every day.
Can you delete a story after posting?
Yes, at any point during its 24 hours, and as many times as you post. There is no limit and nobody is notified that you deleted it. A viewer who opens your ring after the deletion simply sees the remaining stories, or nothing.
What you cannot do is edit a story once it is posted. The caption, the text overlay, the music and the audience setting are fixed. If something in it is wrong, the fix is to delete it and post a corrected version.
After the 24 hours, a story that is not in a Highlight is no longer visible to anyone, so there is nothing left on the account to delete.
Do deleted stories keep their views?
No. The view count and the viewer list belong to the story, so they go when the story goes. Deleting a story an hour after posting it means the views it collected in that hour stop being visible anywhere in the app, including to you.
That is worth knowing before you delete and repost to fix a typo. The new story starts at zero views and an empty list. People who watched the first version will not necessarily come back for the second, because the ring around your photo shows only that something new is there, not that it replaces something they already saw.
Stories also do not feed the public numbers on your profile. Your follower count, your likes total and the view counts on your videos are untouched by anything you post or delete as a story. How to see analytics on TikTok shows where story and video figures sit in your analytics.
Can you see who viewed your TikTok story?
Yes. While the story is live, open it and tap the viewer count at the bottom to see the accounts that watched it, by name. Only you can see that list; other viewers cannot browse it.
The list lasts as long as the story. When the story expires or you delete it, the list goes with it, so screenshot it first if you need a record.
The rule runs both ways, which is why stories feel different from the rest of TikTok. Video views are anonymous, and profile views are named only when both sides have the feature turned on, but story views are named by default. Can people see who viewed your TikTok lays out all of those rules side by side.
Do TikTok stories show on your profile?
Only as a ring around your profile photo while at least one story is live. Visitors tap the photo to watch. There is no story tab on your profile and no grid of old stories, except for any you saved to a Highlight where that feature is available.
Who can see them depends on your account. On a public account, anyone who can open your profile can tap the ring; stories can also appear for your followers and friends in their feeds. On a private account, only approved followers see them.
Once the ring is gone, a visitor has no way of knowing a story was ever there, which is the point of the format.
Can you repost someone's story?
Not the way you repost a video. TikTok's Repost button is built for videos in the feed, and how to repost on TikTok covers where it appears and who sees a repost. A story is meant to expire, so it has no equivalent that republishes it to your followers.
If the share arrow appears on a story, it sends the story privately, for example by message, rather than reposting it. The person who posted it can also limit how their content is shared, so the option is not always there.
If what you want is for a clip to keep reaching people after a day, the answer is a video rather than a story. Its view count stays public for as long as it is up, and buying TikTok views adds to that count on one public video; it does not change how TikTok tests the video in the For You feed. Every TikTok service is listed on the TikTok page.
