How to Unmute Notes on Instagram, and Who Sees Your Notes
A muted note doesn't sit greyed out in your inbox. It just isn't there, which is why the unmute switch lives on the person's profile, not in the notes tray.
How to unmute notes on Instagram: open the person's profile, tap Following, tap Mute and switch off Notes. You can also go to Settings and activity, then Muted accounts, find the account and turn notes back on. Their next note appears at the top of your inbox again for its 24 hours, and they aren't notified either way.
The reason the switch isn't in the notes tray itself is simple: once you mute someone's notes, their notes stop appearing there, so there's nothing to long-press. The rest of this page covers how notes work, who sees yours, and why a note might be missing for reasons that have nothing to do with muting.
Instagram Notes are short status updates, up to 60 characters of text, that sit at the top of the direct messages inbox and on your profile for 24 hours. Meta introduced them in December 2022 as a lightweight way to share what you're up to without posting. They've since gained music, mentions and likes.
The feature that defines notes is the audience. As of October 2026, Instagram's Help Center says a note goes to the followers you follow back or to your Close Friends list, never to the public. That makes notes one of the few places on Instagram that only mutual connections see, and it's why muting matters: a note is a message aimed at people you know, so a muted friend's note is a message you've chosen not to receive.
It also means notes aren't a growth tool. Someone who doesn't follow you, or whom you don't follow back, never sees them. The number a stranger reads when they land on your profile is the follower count, which is the number Instagram followers add to; notes stay among people who already know you.
How do you unmute notes on Instagram, step by step?
There are two routes in current versions of the app, and both end at the same switch.
- From the profile: open the person's profile, tap Following under their bio, tap Mute, and turn off the Notes toggle.
- From Settings: go to your profile, tap the three-line menu, tap Settings and activity, then Muted accounts. Tap the account and turn off muting for notes.
Muting notes doesn't mute anything else
The mute menu has a separate switch for each kind of content, including posts, stories and notes. Turning notes back on leaves the others exactly as they were. If you muted someone's notes but still see their stories, that's the design, not a glitch.
On a computer
Notes appear on instagram.com, but the mute and unmute controls are reliable only in the Android and iPhone apps. If you can't find the switch on the web, use your phone.
How long do Instagram notes last?
24 hours. Instagram's Help Center says a note shows at the top of the inbox and on your profile for up to 24 hours, after which it's no longer visible on Instagram.
You can replace a note before then by posting a new one, which resets the clock, or delete it early by tapping your own note and choosing to delete it.
The 24-hour window is the same length as a story, and the two behave alike in other ways too: both disappear without a trace on the viewer's side. The difference is the audience. A story can be public; a note can't. How long Instagram stories last covers the story side, including archives and highlights.
Who can see your notes on Instagram?
When you post a note, Instagram asks you to pick one of two audiences:
- Followers you follow back. Mutual followers only. Someone who follows you but whom you don't follow doesn't see the note.
- Close Friends. Only the people on your Close Friends list, which you control from your profile.
Can you hide notes from one person?
There's no button that hides a single note from a single person. The two practical options are to share notes with Close Friends and leave that person off the list, or to stop following them back, which removes them from the mutual audience. Muting doesn't help here: muting someone controls what you see from them, not what they see from you.
How do you add a song to a note?
In current versions of the app, tap your own profile picture or the note bubble at the top of your inbox to start a new note, then tap the music icon and search for a track. Instagram lets you attach a short clip of the song, up to 30 seconds, alongside your text. Friends see the song title on your note and can tap it to listen.
Instagram also supports sharing what you're listening to from Spotify as a note, through Spotify's share options, where that integration is available for your account and region.
Music availability depends on your country and account type. Some business accounts and some regions have a reduced music library or none, which is the usual reason the music icon is missing; why some songs are not on Instagram goes through each cause.
Can you see who liked your note?
Yes. Instagram added likes for notes in 2024: your friends can double-tap a note or tap the heart in the reply sheet. When you tap your own note, the people who liked it are listed there.
What you can't see is a viewer list. Instagram doesn't tell you who looked at your note without reacting, which makes notes different from stories, where the viewer list is the main feature; who viewed your Instagram story explains how that list works.
Replies to a note arrive as direct messages, so every reply starts or continues a private conversation.
Why can't I see notes on Instagram?
If one person's notes are missing, the reasons are usually about the relationship between your two accounts. If all notes are missing, it's usually the app. Check these in order:
- You muted their notes. Check their profile under Following, then Mute.
- You're not in their audience. Notes go to followers they follow back or to their Close Friends, so if they don't follow you, or picked Close Friends without you, you won't see it.
- The note expired. Notes vanish after 24 hours.
- Your app is out of date. Notes and their newer features roll out by app version, so updating often brings them back.
- The feature isn't available on your account. Instagram rolls features out unevenly, so notes can be missing on some accounts or in some regions.
Are notes worth using if you're building an audience?
As a way to stay in touch with the people who already follow you back, yes. They're the lowest-effort update Instagram has, they show up in the inbox where friends are already looking, and a reply opens a conversation instantly.
As a way to reach new people, no. A note never leaves your circle of mutual followers or Close Friends, so it can't be discovered, recommended or shared to strangers. The parts of Instagram that reach people who don't know you are Reels, Explore and the profile itself, covered in how to increase Instagram reach.
When a stranger does land on your profile, the follower count is the first number they read. Instagram followers add to that public count using only your handle, never your password. Every Instagram service is listed on the Instagram page.
