How to Reset Facebook Algorithm Recommendations

Facebook gives you several small controls instead of one big one. Each moves a different part of the feed, and together they do what a reset button would.

How do I reset my Facebook algorithm?

Work through the controls in this order. The first ones act fastest:

• On posts you don't want, tap the three dots and choose Show less, or Hide post. On posts you like, choose Show more.
• Snooze people, Pages or groups for 30 days, or unfollow them to remove their posts from your feed without unfriending.
• Open Feed preferences from the menu, under Settings and privacy, and set up Favorites: up to 30 friends and Pages whose posts are prioritized.
• Clear your Facebook search history, since past searches feed recommendations too.
• When you want to skip the ranking entirely, open the Feeds tab, or the Friends tab where available, to see posts in order without suggestions.

How long does it take to change the Facebook algorithm?

Show less, hide and snooze apply as soon as you use them to that post or source. The broader shift in what Facebook recommends takes several days of consistent signals, because ranking responds to your pattern rather than a single click. Meta describes Show more and Show less as temporary adjustments, so a feed you retrain and then ignore can drift back toward what you engage with most. Your scrolling, watching and reacting keep teaching it.

How to reset Facebook Reels algorithm

Reels have their own recommendations, and the same kind of control. On a Reel, open the three-dot menu and choose Show more or Show less. Meta said in May 2023 that these temporarily raise or lower the ranking score of that Reel and Reels like it. Hiding a Reel or choosing not to see content from a creator also works.

Watching is the strongest signal on Reels. Replaying a Reel or watching to the end tells Facebook far more than a like, and quickly scrolling past tells it the opposite. If the Reels feed is stuck on one topic, the fastest fix is a few sessions of deliberately scrolling past that topic and staying on what you actually want to watch, combined with Show less on the worst offenders.

How does Facebook's algorithm work?

Meta describes Feed ranking as predicting which posts you're most likely to find valuable, using signals such as who posted it, how you've interacted with that person or Page before, what kind of content it is, how other people are reacting to it and how recent it is. It scores the posts you could see and orders them. Recommended posts from accounts you don't follow are chosen the same way, based on topics and accounts similar to what you engage with.

For any post in your feed, the three-dot menu has Why am I seeing this post?, which explains the main reasons that post was shown to you and links to controls. It's the clearest window Facebook gives you into its own ranking.

What the Feeds and Friends tabs change

They don't retrain the algorithm. They go around it. The Feeds tab shows posts from friends, groups and Pages in chronological order, with filters for Favorites, Friends, Groups and Pages, and no suggested posts. The revamped Friends tab, launched in March 2025 in the US and Canada, shows only content from your friends. Using them doesn't reset the Home feed, but it gives you a view Facebook's recommendations don't touch.

Why the copy-and-paste reset posts don't work

Every so often a post goes around claiming that if you hold your finger on it, copy it and paste it on your own profile, Facebook will reset your algorithm and show you more of your friends. It does nothing. There is no hidden command in a post's text that changes your settings, and Facebook's ranking can't be triggered by a phrase.

The post spreads because it asks for sharing, which is engagement bait, and some versions are used by scammers who add comments offering paid fixes, or by compromised accounts trying to look normal. Ignore it. The real controls are all in the menus above.

What resetting says about who sees your posts

Every control above is also a lever someone else can pull on your posts. If a friend adds you to Favorites, your posts rank higher for them. If they choose Show less on one of your posts, posts like it rank lower for them. If they read Facebook through the Feeds or Friends tab, they see your posts in order, regardless of how many reactions they got.

The number under a post is what someone scrolling past sees first. Some Pages use Facebook post likes or Facebook reactions so a new post doesn't sit at zero; that changes the visible count, while the ranking still weighs how real people in the feed respond. Can you reset Facebook the way you reset other apps?

Each platform handles this differently. Instagram has had a one-step Reset suggested content option since late 2024, under Content preferences. Facebook sits with X: several controls, no single reset, and a chronological tab for when you want none of it.

The most complete fresh start on Facebook would be a new account, which loses your friends, groups and history, and isn't worth it for a feed problem. The controls above, used consistently for a few days, are the better route.
